(Vernier) PRODIGY OF CABINETMAKING. - Finally, by making one last change, I transform, as you see, my bed into a chest of drawers...I can put all my things in it! - Yes, but when you get into your bed, where the hell do you put your shirts! 10. (Beaumont) A DIFFICULT EDUCATION. - Two years ago he was shouting very nicely long live the King!... I made him forget that, and now he can almost shout long live the Republic! Sir doesn't want to tell me where he spent the evening yesterday...ah sir doesn't want to give me an account...you're doing too much with your Provisional Government, my dear, it can't last! 26. En temps de revolution. (Beaumont) In times of revolution. 27. (Daumier) (DR 1938; Hazard & Delteil 1438).) THE WIFE OF THE REPRESENTATIVE. - Will I need a hat, Dear? - My dear, I am a representative now! If you want to ask me a question, you must first file a petition in the Chamber! - Yes, I know you.... and then you'll call the order of the day! 28. (Daumier) (DR 1939; Hazard & Delteil 1439). - You know the fat deputy in front, who makes 25 Francs per day. Today I read in the paper that a commission was given to him. - For such an order one usually gets 75 cents, if there is no reply. This would mean that makes 25 Francs and 15 Sous today. What luck! 29. LES REPRÉSENTANS PRENANT LEURS VACANCES. Le Président - Messieurs, de grâce restez encore un quart d'heure,...le temps seulement de voter encore une petite loi!... (Cham) THE REPRESENTATIVES TAKING THEIR VACATION. The President - Gentlemen, please stay another quarter of an hour,...just enough time to vote on one more small law!... 30. (Cham) MR. de GIRARDIN AND HIS DOCTOR. - True, Mr. de Girardin, you should take a vacation; all the parliamentary work that you failed to carry out, all the laws that you failed to vote, all that must have tired you a lot, so you must gather new strength for all the great things that you still have to do! Daumier Register DR-1937-1939; Hazard & Delteil 1437-1439.

1880. IEHARA, Masanori and Kan'ichiro SHIOZU. Gakko hitsuyo irozu mondo. [2], 40, [2] pp. on 22 double folded leaves, illustrated with two hand-coloured charts and small hand-coloured squares throughout the text. 8vo, 210 x 150 mm., bound in publisher's wrappers with title label. Kyoto: Wakabayashi Kisuke, 1876 [Meiji 9]. This is most probably the first textbook of Western colour theory printed in Japan for Japanese students. It is almost surely based on European models, but since it is a nineteenth-century Japanese book, it possesses a rather unique charm. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1828. First edition. Captain John Ross was a naval officer and Arctic explorer. "After a failed attempt in 1818, John Ross returned to the Arctic to search for the North-West Passage with his nephew James Clark Ross in 1829. Explorer John Ross first voyaged to find the North-West Passage- the seaway through the Arctic, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans - in 1818. He had wrongly claimed that Lancaster Sound was enclosed by mountains and was keen to restore his reputation. He thought that a smaller, shallower ship, with an auxiliary steam engine, would have more success than the larger vessels that had been sent to the Arctic. The British Admiralty had no interest in backing the voyage after Ross's previous failure, so Felix Booth, a gin magnate, supplied the funding. Ross set sail with his nephew, James Clark Ross, in May 1829 on board the reinforced steamer Victory. The voyage would turn into a four-year ordeal." (Royal Museum Greenwich) "[Ross] was ahead of his time in recognizing the potential of steam in warships and in 1828 he published "A treatise on navigation by steam." The natural conservatism of sailors, combined with the unreliability of early engines, had created a great prejudice against steam in the Royal Navy. At about this time Ross urged the Admiralty to send a steam vessel on an Arctic voyage. Barrow was still in office and, as could be expected, the proposal was rejected. Undeterred, Ross approached his wealthy friend Felix Booth, distiller of Booth's gin, seeking support for the project. The public-spirited Booth at first refused because of possible criticism that he was interested only in the parliamentary rewards offered for sailing through a northwest passage. However, when parliament abolished the Board of Longitude in 1828 it also eliminated the graduated rewards and Booth then agreed to sponsor the expedition." (Dictionary of Canadian Biography). Description
Orange County, Texas, 1866. Three double-sided sheets measuring approximately 12 x 7 ½ inches. Very delicate with some damage intersecting with text. Very good to excellent.. 1864 oaths of office for Coroner Augustus M. Rodgers and Deputy Sheriff W. D. Bryan; an 1865 oath of office and surety bond for County Clerk W.B. Ellis; and an 1866 bond for County Clerk R.H. Smith with an oath of office for Assessor and Collector William Chisholm. The oaths of office in particular are interesting, reading in part: “I do further solemnly swear (or affirm) that since the adoption of the Constitution of the State of Texas by the Congress of the United States I being a citizen of this state, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this state nor out of it, nor have I accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as a second in carrying, nor aided advised or assisted anyone so offending”. Dueling was common in the American South in the antebellum period and, according to the Texas State Historical Association, was wildly popular among Texans, with even David G. Burnet challenging his fellow former Republic of Texas president Sam Houston to a duel. The later oaths continue: “And I do further swear (or affirm) that to the best of my knowledge and ability [...] that I will in good faith observe and support the Laws of Congress and the Proclamation of the President of the United States in Relation to Slavery”. Famously, emancipation was not enforced in Texas until the arrival of General Gordon Granger in 1865, on what is now celebrated as Juneteenth. By contrast, the 1864 oath of office is a pledge to the Confederate States and of course makes no mention of the Emancipation Proclamation.

After the Civil War some diehard southerners moved to Mexico and South America. Mexico's Emperor enticed these disappointed Confederates with land grants. Slaves, however, were prohibited, as Slavery was illegal under Mexican law. Allan Abbot Brinsmade [1831-1910] was one of them. Born in Honolulu when his father was serving as consul for the United States, he moved to the mainland as a young man. In 1858 he volunteered with the Morgan Riflemen, an independent company of volunteers, and served in the Utah War against the Mormons. During the Civil War, he enlisted with the Second Company, Louisiana's Confederate Washington Artillery, and fought in many battles until he was injured at Williamsport. At the end of the war, he went into exile in Mexico and joined the Mexican Army, eventually becoming Lieut. Colonel of Artillery. He later returned to the United States and settled in Houston as a bookkeeper. In 1875, he was in New Orleans as the first Secretary of the New Orleans Stock Exchange, and served as such until October 15, 1895. ["Brinsmade Resigns." The Times-Picayune, New Orleans, LA, October 3, 1895, p,11.] Jose Maria de Jesus Carvajal [1809-1874] was a surveyor, legislator and liberal revolutionary. He was born in San Fernando de Bexar [San Antonio] and by 1830 was the official surveyor and son-in-law of empresario Martin De Leon. In 1835, he was elected to the legislature of Coahuila and Texas. was elected as a legislator in 1835. He served as secretary and was authorized to publish the laws of the state in English and Spanish, which were published in 1839. Beginning in 1839, he led some anti-centralist revolts in Northern Mexico; in 1846, he commanded a division of the Mexican army against the United States; in 1862, he joined the Mexican liberal army against the French; and about 1864, he negotiated a loan from the United States on behalf of the liberal Minister of Justice Benito Juarez, to aid in the cause. ["Carbajal, Jose Maria Jesus." Handbook of Texas Online. Accessed Feb. 21, 2021. Published by the Texas State Historical Society.] Servando Canales [1830-1883] was a Mexican soldier who took part in the Battle of Padierna in 1847 and later became a guerilla. After the war, he became involved in smuggling for a time. He later continued his military career, including taking part in the Siege of Puebla in 1862, took part in the Siege of Queretaro about 1867, and was present at the execution of Maximilian. In 1879, he was elected governor of Tamaulipas.
