Description
GIACOMO PUCCINI (1858-1924). Puccini, a famous Italian opera composer, is best remembered for La Boheme, Tosca and Madame Butterfly.ALS. 1pg. 6 x 9 . April 16, 1902. Torre Del Lago. An autograph letter signed Puccini to Magante. He wrote on Torre Del Lago letterhead in Italian: Dearest Magante, I returned from New York 20 days ago and after some rest and welcome boredom I am finally writing to you. I will send you the 4 works as soon as I reach Milan, that is, at the end of the month. I never received the Indian macca you promised me. Would you also be so kind as to let me know how much I owe you for the pelts/fur you sent me? You can find me at this address: Milan, via Verdi 4. Now I'd need a favor. Mr Paqui, the painter living in Milan who you met him at my place at the Brensa wants to have a little exhibition of his works, landscape impressions. I need your help in recommending him to Diario and your other colleagues so that he can build a good reputation and sell some of his works. I will write to Deke too, so that he recommends him to the Prensa. Greetings from Elvira too. We are fine. Sincerely yours Puccini. There is some light staining, a central fold and slightly irregular edges. The letter is framed with a translation on the back.

About very good.
Description
[N.p., 1900. About very good.. Two silver gelatin photographs, each 4.25 x 6.5 inches, on mounts measuring 8 x 9.75 inches. Moderate foxing to mounts, some surface wear, spotting, and silvering to images. A wonderful pair of original photographs capturing two different groups of Native Americans in traditional dress. The first image features nine Native Americans, including men, women, and one young girl. The second captures seven men and women. All of the subjects in each picture stare directly into the camera. The images are not captioned in the negative by the photographer, but the subjects are clearly Plains Indians or perhaps from the southwest, given their attire. The images offer an excellent opportunity for further research to identify the subjects and their tribal affiliation. The two photographs do have the feel of picturing members of the same tribe.

Description
New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1985. Fine in fine jacket.. First edition of this essay on the Atlanta Child Murders, which a contemporary review at the time called "nothing less than an update on the progress-or lack of it-of the American Dream." Baldwin first began researching the Atlanta Child Murders of 1979-1981 on assignment from Walter Lowe, the first Black editor at PLAYBOY, where an earlier version of this essay was first published and won the magazine's Best Nonfiction award for 1981. Sensitive to his burden of responsibility to victims, survivors, and the truth, Baldwin rejected the creative license employed by Truman Capote and his many lesser true-criminal successors, explaining: "Tolstoy has every right to throw Anna Karenina under the train. [...] But the life of a living human being, no one writes it. You cannot deal with another human being as though he were a fictional creation." Rather, EVIDENCE is a deep examination of the still-unresolved crimes and investigation in the context of the many failures and spoiled promises of a post-Civil-Rights-era South, the broken relations between the police and the Black community of Atlanta, and the fatal corruption of city administrators and the American justice system. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original quarter black cloth, black paper boards, silver-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($11.95) glossy color typographic dust jacket with photo of Baldwin by J. Phil Samuell on rear panel. Fore-edge machine deckle. xvi, 125, [1] pages. Purple printed review slip, listing publication date as October 28, 1985 and price as $11.95, laid in. Bright, sharp, and sound. b.

Boston/New York: Houghton Mifflin Company. Very Good+. 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [good solid copy, minor bumping to top corners, gilt lettering on spine and front cover still bright; one-time owner's name and reading-note-to-self on ffep, some pencil underlining and occasional brief notations (also in pencil) in the text]. Sponsored by the National Federation of Settlements (and with an introduction by Jane Addams, its first president), this volume grew out a study that was "undertaken immediately upon the formation" of the organization in 1911. It was designed to gather information from settlement houses throughout the country related to the social and emotional challenges faced by women (particularly adolescent girls) who had been more or less compelled to enter the workforce out of economic necessity, and were having difficulties meeting "the general moral uncertainty of the age [and] the serious moral problems forced upon them by the reorganization of their sphere of life through its invasion by modern industry." A great deal of attention is devoted to examining such topics as "Inadequate Home Life as a Cause of Moral Strain" and "The Morality of Sex," with various prescriptive solutions offered in the areas of recreation, education, club work, etc. .
