Description
Paris and Brussels, 1784. Engraved frontispiece and 9 engraved plates on thick stock. Contemporary blue publisher’s wrappers with printed spine label, glassine sleeve. An excellent copy in fine original condition. First edition thus, a truncation of the author’s landmark 2-volume work on the first aerial balloon flight published the year before. It records the efforts of the Montgolfier brothers, who, on June 5, 1783, successfully launched their unmanned linen and paper hot air balloon, which was 36 feet in diameter, to a height of 6000 feet. The author also describes here several additional balloon flights made after the June 5 success. In addition to the narratives, Faujas de Saint-Fond includes practical information about the chemistry of the gas used, the mathematics and physics involved in the flights, the properties of the materials that make up the balloons, and the costs of the experiments. The first manned balloon flight took place in November 1783, and it is also documented here. The finely detailed plates show the ballons, apparatuses for heating the air, trajectories, and equipment. Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond (1743-1819) was a French scientist and sponsor of the Montgolfier brothers. It is important to distinguish this text from the one published by Cuchet in Paris 1783-4. Cuchet had received a printing privilege from the King for that book for 10 years, so Le Francq could not print an identical text. See PMM 229 and Dibner 179.
