Description
Luguni; [Lyon]: Sebastien Gryphe, 1549. Octavo (16 x cm.), [1-2] 3-184, [8] pages. Collation: 2A-2M8. With decorative initials, printer's devices to title page and final page. Text in Latin. An early Lyon edition. A Roman agricultural treatise from the late 4th or early 5th century, well-known throughout the medieval period, also called Opus Agriculturae. Palladius tells us that he owned land in the Neapolitan countryside and in Sardinia and that he directed the farming himself. This work is the result of his observations but was strongly influenced by Columella and others. With general advice on farming, including fruit trees, viticulture, beekeeping, and an early reference to a water mill; and including an 85-couplet poem on grafting. Palladius drew on earlier agricultural authors, but his treatise is condensed and arranged in order by month and season, making his book a useful reference for working farmers. Minor external dirt, occasional foxing, slight worming to lower margins of many leaves, effecting text in some cases. Parchment over boards, rebacked in later parchment and titled in black on spine, all edges sprinkled red and green; renewed endleaves. Still, overall very good. Bookplate of the James V. Brown Library, Williamsport, PA. [OCLC locates twenty-one copies of this printing; USTC 150242; Adams P112; ].

Description
Octavo. Connecting Harrisville, Georgetown and Cadez, OH. An official 24 page document in its original note book, listing its origin, its donors (the initial investment was over $70,000. (There is a pastedown newspaper announcement showing the five major investors including John Heberling, a major manufacturer of threshing machines, whose $50,000 gift was by far the largest) The enthusiasm for plank roads was exceptionally strong in Northern Ohio. (Charles A. Hanna, Historical Collections of Harrison County, tells of the difficulty for travelers to make a day's journey of less than ten miles because of the undeveloped terrain. The plank roads became the immediate answer, so many new companies were chartered which allowed stores to be established in the villages and towns as well as providing a way for the early farmers to get goods to a wider market. A general incorporation law was passed in 1851. The plank road was viewed as a revolutionary advance. It allowed the stagecoach to deliver mail to much closer locations to the addressee.

Description
New York: G.P. Putman's Sons, 1917 First edition. Scarce, especially in dust jacket. The School Nurse describes the importance of school nursing as a connector between the school and the home, at the time of its inception. Struthers includes instruction on how physicians should treat the common ailments of children as well as suggestions for state regulations. Blue cloth boards stamped in white lettering. Includes a former owner's contemporary inscription. With original dust jacket. C. Octavo. The last 32 pages include example "card system of reports," sample treatment logs, and advertisements for other books on nursing. Includes photo frontispiece and 23 reproduced photographs throughout, as well as occasional illustrations. Chipping to spine and front of jacket. Clean throughout. Very good item, with good dust jacket. Lina Rogers Struthers, R.N. (1870-1946) is thought of as the first school nurse in the United States. She was born in Ontario, Canada and attended nurse school in Toronto. She later lived and worked at the Henry Street Settlement in New York, which consisted of a group of nurses who provided home health visits. They were also active in several economic and social causes, including advocating for women's suffrage and upgraded housing codes. In the late 19th century, the population of New York City was rapidly increasing, and illnesses were spreading in schools. The city health officials consulted the nurses of the Henry Street Settlement about this issue. They suggested bringing nurses into schools to treat children—and Struthers led this mission. In makeshift conditions, Struthers served children in schools as well as doing home visits and educating families. After the success of Struthers's work, other cities began appointing school nurses, including Los Angeles in 1904.
