Around Minerva are representations of the new country—on her right, a field of Indian corn, a stand of oaks, and the outline of a town; at her feet, a hoe, a plow, and a sickle; on her left a quadrant and a telescope, a ship heading for shore, and the sun completely risen above the cloud. Over the whole is the motto SUB LIBERTATE FLORENT, which suggests that arts and sciences flourish best in. -- [2] Rubber stamps (discarded) of the Linda Hall Library, Kansas City, MO. -- [3] Henry and Carol Faul. Henry Faul was a geologist working on Enrico Fermi's team at the University of Chicago. He was responsible for prospecting uranium ore in Colorado and Utah. He also travelled to Manhattan Project sites at Los Alamos and in Washington, DC. Following the war, Faul continued to work on nuclear projects and participated in the Bikini Atoll test. Description
1794. First Edition. [ERSKINE, Thomas] GURNEY, Joseph, reporter. The Whole Proceedings of the Trial of Indictment against Thomas Walker [and five others] for a Conspiracy to Overthrow the Constitution and Government, and to Aid and Assist the French, (being the King's Enemies). Philadelphia: Samuel Harrison Smith, 1794. Octavo, period-style full marbled calf, red morocco spine label; pp. 104, xix. $950.First American edition of one of Thomas Erskine's most famous cross examinations, in which he demolished the principal witness for the Crown, saving his client from the charge of treason. Attractively bound.""The published speeches of Thomas, Lord Erskine are among the finest specimens we have of English forensic oratory"" (Marke, 1081). ""It was his defense of the reformers and radicals inspired by the events in France which sealed his reputation for posterity… In April 1794 he defended Thomas Walker, of the Manchester Constitutional Society, who was tried at the Lancaster assizes with several others for a conspiracy to overthrow the government and aid the French in case of an invasion. The crown had a weak case, depending on the evidence of one witness; Erskine destroyed his credibility in cross-examination, suggested the prosecution was 'cruel and oppressive,' and produced unimpeachable evidence that the witness had perjured himself, upon which the crown gave up the case"" (ODNB). The trial is well reported by Joseph Gurney, and transcribes Erskine's lengthy jury address verbatim. First published in Manchester, 1794. Harvard Law Catalogue II, 1218. Evans 27076. Minor paper reinforcements to corners of title page. Fine condition.

Description
Philadelphia: H.C. Peck & Theo. Bliss, 1855. Hardcover. Very Good. Thick quarto. 1130, [8] family records, 382pp. Text in two columns with references in the center. Full dark leather, both boards decoratively stamped in black, the spine has raised bands creating six compartments each with a device and decorative border stamped in black save for the second from the top which has a simpler border stamped in black and "Holy Bible" stamped in gilt, all page edges gilt, brown endpapers, and a metal clasp with "James Freeman" elegantly etched upon its surface. Boards are worn, spine is worn along the edges and raised bands, the foot of the spine is splitting where it meets the rear board, the paper along the gutters is split but the hinges remain sound, light offsetting and scattered foxing throughout, still very good with the binding sound and the clasp still perfectly functional. The family records pages have been left blank. The additions are index of subject, The Harmony of The Four Evangelists, and tables of measures, weights, and coins. This exact edition is not found in Hills' *The English Bible in America*, but it differs from entry 1570 in only two ways, 1) This edition does not have "Printed from Stereo-Copper Plates" printed on the title page, and 2) Instead of "The Harmony of the Four Evangelists," this section is titled "Harmony of the Four Gospels" in the Hills entry, thus our date of circa 1855.

Rootenberg Rare Books & Manuscripts (United States)
Description
London: J. Brotherton, 1739. Second edition. With 14 engraved plates, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, rebacked spine label. A fabulous engraved dated bookplate on the paste-down, “E Libris Societatis ob causam literarum, apud Villam de Wibech, Institutae, A.D. 1781.” Overall a fine clean copy. Stated second edition, printed the same year as the first, the only difference being the title page stating that it is a second edition. This is the first British study exclusively focusing on operative techniques. Sharp, a surgeon at Guy’s Hospital, details his approach to various surgeries and the instruments he uses for operations on wounds, ulcers, hernias, stones, amputations, tumours, tonsils, and hare-lip, among many others. He is very specific when it comes to explaining the position of the patient, use of tools to open the body, and the means of suturing. This work, extremely popular, was reprinted numerous times over the years, and used by surgeons around the world. Sharp (1709-1778) practiced from 1733 to 1757 at Guy's Hospital in London and became internationally famous after the publication of this title. It is dedicated to William Cheselden, for whom Sharp worked as an apprentice. Blake, p. 416; DNB, XVII, pp. 1352-1353; Wellcome, V, p. 96.
