Description
159 pp. & one leaf with index & colophon. Small 8vo (180 x 115 mm.), orig. printed pictorial softcover (spine worn), author portrait on lower cover. Guaymas, Mexico: Joaquín Mortiz, August 1970. First and only edition of Carrión’s second book, a collection of six short stories, printed in a numbered edition of 3000 copies. In the 1960s, Carrión (1941-89) was one of Mexico’s emerging literary talents; a number of his short stories had been published in leading journals, and his first play, El Gran Espectáculo, was performed at the Casa de la Cultura de Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, to rave reviews. Following his studies in philosophy and letters at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, he spent time in France and Germany (1964-65), with the aid of scholarships, learning both languages. Dissatisfaction with the Mexican literary world and local hostility toward the gay community drove Carrión to emigrate to Amsterdam in 1970, where he found a progressive and free-spirited milieu. From then on he conscientiously abandoned literature and fully dedicated his life and work to the visual arts, in the form of books, films, social experiments, performances, mail art, etc. This book represents the artist’s final moment as a traditional/conventional author, preceding his conversion to experimental and avant-garde methods of communication. “In 1970, he published [a second] six-story collection, De Alemania, considered a more mature work. Here, he has perfected the interior monologue, which is the primary manner in which his characters disclose themselves. In some stories, the salient characteristic is alienation, but in others, Carrión employs humor as a catalyst. Since such characteristics are not always mutually exclusive, he does achieve a delicate balance between the two.”–Dictionary of Mexican Literature (1992), ed. Eladio Cortés, p. 147. Very good copy, internally fine; spine a little creased, as with most copies. Housed in a cloth clamshell box.

He also edited the papers of Edward Alleyn, actor and later founder of Dulwich College, for the Shakespeare Society, and was employed by the 6th Duke of Devonshire as Librarian. He represented the Duke at the prolonged sale (1834-6) of the collection of the great bibliophile and book collector Richard Heber, and became a member of the Garrick Club and the Society of Antiquaries under his aegis. In 1842-4 he published a new edition of Shakespeare's works in 8 volumes." (Royal Trust Collection). Ebisch and Schücking, p. 55. Jaggard, p. 525. HBS 69459. $1,250.

London: Thomas Cook & Son, Ltd, 1931. Wraps. Very good. [TRAVEL] [ADVERTISING] [EPHEMERA.] 8vo; 287 [1]pp; stiff glazed color pictorial wrapper; b&w photographic illustrations; ads; chipping and creasing to wrapper; very good. Interesting look at the early 20th century British travel industry. Leicestershire cabinetmaker Thomas Cook founded an agency in 1841 to transport temperance supporters to a meeting site by rail. He expanded travel groups in support of the movement for Sunday schools and temperance societies through 1845. His first commercial venture was in 1845, a trip of more than 100 miles to Liverpool by train. Cook subsequently began organizing trips to Europe, including hotels, cruises, and eventually airlines. It has been said that he invented the modern travel industry. Sold and reorganized several times throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the company collapsed in 2019 when bankers demanded repayment of loans. The company, unable to pay, stranded travelers around the world. This brochure covers travel promoted by the Thomas Cook company to Great Britain and Ireland, Switzerland, France, Western Europe, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Russia (U.S.S.R.), the Balkans, Spain and Portugal, Egypt, Palestine and Syria, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. A sea and land tour, "Sea Holidays" to the Dalmatian Coast, around Corsica, and to Belgium, Holland and Germany. Cruises advertised to Canada and U.S.A., Madeira and Canary Isles, South America and Africa, as well as "Pleasure Cruises." Includes travel pricing and delightful ads for hotels and resorts. OCLC only locates one copy at the National Library of Wales. Scarce.
