Description
New York: np, 1930. First edition. Photograph framed. Fine. RARE, LARGE SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH BY FEARLESS FEMALE PHOTOJOURNALIST MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE. Photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White holds many crowns. Some have called her "one of photojournalism's most groundbreaking and memorable characters" ( Britannica ); the New York Times referred to her as "one of the world's pre-eminent photographers" and "the female gaze behind Life Magazine"; she held, above all else "the belief in an artist's duty to change the world." ( Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame ). She was the first woman allowed to shoot in combat zones, the first female war photojournalist, and the first female documentary photographer accredited to work with the U.S. armed forces. From Montana to Germany to Russia to North Africa, Bourke-White lent her camera - and her point of view - to capture some of the world's most monumental, disastrous, and powerful moments in history, bringing them (often for the first time) into the center of American public consciousness. Bourke-White made her start in industrial and architectural photography. To this day, her photographs of the Otis Steel Mill (based in Cleveland, Ohio) are considered some of the best of its kind. Given the dirty and sometimes hazardous conditions of the steel mill, steelmaking photography was understood as being notoriously difficult; more than that, the black-and-white film of the time - which reacted only to blue light - was difficult to use with the red and orange luminesces in the mill. Bourke-White's solution was to use magnesium flares, producing white light to illuminate the scenes around her. It was her ingenuity and skill that caught the attention of American magazine magnate Henry Luce, who hired her in 1929 for his Fortune magazine. Then, in 1936, she was brought on as one of the first four staff photographers for Life magazine, a publication with which she worked for the next 25 years. On 24 Hour Worker: While the particulars are unclear, one can limit the time that this photograph was taken to within the two-year period 1930-32. After completing a Fortune magazine assignment photographing Krupp Iron Works in Germany, Bourke-White continued on into the Soviet Union to photograph the effects of the first five-year plan (1928-32), a campaign implemented by Stalin to develop heavy industry and collectivize agriculture, in an attempt to jumpstart economic growth. Bourke-White was the first foreign photographer to take pictures of the development and effects of the plan. The 24 Hour Worker, then, is a powerful image focusing on the human cost of the industrial policies adapting to the newly evolving economic landscape of the USSR. In fact, what is particularly compelling about this image is the attention given to the expression and form of the worker's face itself. At the height of her career, Bourke-White began to introduce more people and subject matter into her oeuvre - both in her work with Life Magazine, as well as photographing Dust Bowl communities during the Great Depression (the results of which were ultimately compiled into a photobook titled Have You Seen Their Faces, with accompanying text by husband Erskine Caldwell). Doing so allowed her to develop a more compassionate approach, moving away from style required for the industrial and architectural subjects of her early photography. The 24 Hour Worker is a powerful example of portrait photography from one of America's photography giants and an important piece epitomizing her important documentary work in the Soviet Union under Stalin. Signed by Margaret Bourke-White ["Bourke-White"] in the mount below the photograph. Provenance: From the estate of Evelyne Z. Daitz, the celebrated photography dealer and owner and director of the Witkin Gallery (New York). 24 Hour Worker, U.S.S.R. Warm-toned silver print with the applied thin black border, the image measuring 13x9 1/4 inches (33x23.5 cm.), with Bourke-White's signature, in pencil, on mount recto, and her credit hand stamp, on mount verso. 1930-32. Stunningly and archivally framed under UV-protecting museum glass to an overall size of approximately 21x25 inches. A magnificent image in fine condition.

Description
New York: Lucis Publishing Company, 1939. Fourth Edition. Very Good. Fourth edition. Signed by Alice A. Bailey on the title page. [xvi], 372 pp. Bound in publisher's dark teal cloth lettered in gilt; lacking the dust jacket. Very Good with light wear, offsetting to endpapers. Previous owner signature and bookplate to front free endpaper, penciled marginalia throughout, some colored underlining. Rare signed. Alice Bailey, born in Manchester in 1880, was raised as a Church of England evangelical. She married a former soldier and moved with her husband to the United States, where he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. After their 1915 separation, Bailey began studying Theosophy while raising three children by herself. When she remarried in 1921, it was to the national secretary of the Theosophical Society, Foster Bailey. The turning point in Alice Bailey's life was not her second marriage but her visitation from Master Djwhal Khul, an ancient Tibetan whose name first appeared in a work by Madame Blavatsky. The Tibetan appeared to Bailey while she walking in the Hollywood Hills in 1919 and began telepathically dictating the teachings that filled twenty books over thirty years. Bailey was one of the earliest writers to use the term New Age, and her writing profoundly influenced the development of twentieth century esoteric thought. Lou Reed was a fan -- the Velvet Underground song “White Light/White Heat” was inspired by Bailey’s A Treatise on White Magic -- and Reed credited Jonathan Richman's song “Hey There Little Insect” to his own evangelizing influence. The musicians Van Morrison and Todd Rundgren based several songs on her works. The Nadine Bullard whose bookplate adorns this copy of Letters on Occult Meditation appears to have been just as passionate about Bailey's work. Her ownership signature is dated 1942, and judging by the dates near several passages, she was still reading it in 1977. In 1950 Bullard wrote two articles for the Theosophical magazine The Beacon, which was founded by Alice and Foster Bailey. It was likely she who obtained Alice's signature on this book.

Description
London: Golborne Editions, 2019. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 27 of 75 copies within a slipcase, covered in printed papers by Patrick Randle, and finished in a pressed half leather. An additional 15 copies were issued with an editioned set of engravings and photographs in a portfolio and bound in full leather. This remarkable book is about the collaboration of three master artists, Schanilec, Schneideman, and Randle. It was printed at Randle's Whittington Press for Golborne Editions. The idea for this work first appeared in 2010 during conversations between Schanilec and Schneideman on consumerism and its effects on people and society. The photographs were taken over several years and images were regularly sent to Schanilec to create his redefining of the documetary photograph with his marvelous wood engravings of the photos. The result was a total of 13 photographs decided upon to use and the resultant engravings. The book's format for each is an image of Schanilec's interpretation of the photograph followed by the black and white photograph itself. Interspersed are texts by Schneieman and Schanilec with their thoughts about the project and some of the communications they exchanged. The result is a fascinating yet troubling discourse on consumerism and commercialism. Scheideman's photographs were printed by him using his carbon archival technique on Zerkall 902AS paper. Schanilec and Randle printed the wood engravings on Naturalis paper at The Whittington Press. The letterpress sections of the book were printed by Randle on Shoji-i-Tanaka paper using Walbaum type. All copies were bound by The Fine Book Bindery, Finedon. The book's striking cover is an enlarged photgraph of a young boy's face. Housed in a bright yellow cloth slipcase. In fine condition. Measures 12,59 x 14.25 inches. Unpaginated [about 40 pages] PRI/110724.

Philadelphia & London: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1920. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. First edition of this charming Art Nouveau-tinged collection of rhymes and illustrations about the delights of riding a tricycle, an unusual Sarah S. Sitwell Weber title. Sarah S. Stilwell Weber studied under Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute, and was one of the core members of the Brandywine School and the Plastic Club. Her vibrant figures and Art Nouveau-inspired compositions made her a popular periodical illustrator, and she created covers for THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, HARPER'S BAZAAR, COLLIER'S, and others; the work made her one of the highest-paid woman artists of her day. This beautiful book of children adventuring on their Kiddie-Kar tricycles is an example of her artistic skill, and is rare on the market, particularly in its original dust jacket. 9.25'' x 11.25''. First edition; 7 1/2 x 5; pp. 3-16, [4]; grey wraps, illustrated in black; light age-toning and spotting to margins; a few minor spots to pages; very good condition. Cover art by Pencho Georgiev. Signed and inscribed by the author to his wife on the title page: "To Mrs. Doncheva / From the Author / 4/20/26." Anton Iliev Donchev (1883 - 1944) was a Bulgarian author and publicist, best known for his writings on occultism and the Bogomils (a Gnostic dualistic sect, which flourished in the Balkans between the 10th and the 15th centuries). This was his only book of poetry. The cover art was designed by Pencho Georgiev (1900 - 1940) - a renowned Bulgarian artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and scenographer. He studied in Paris and later, collaborated with famous Russian Impressionist Konstantin Korovin on stage design for several Russian operas. He illustrated the first works of Maxim Gorky to be translated into Bulgarian. Georgiev died tragically, at the age of 40, while working on decorating the Bulgarian National Theater for the production of "Salammbo," when he slipped and fell into an elevator shaft on the stage.

Description
1817 Leading Philadelphia bookseller-publisher and cartographer lauds "Western Emigration" quarto, one page, plus stamp-less address leaf, in very good, legible condition. Happily responding to Guilford's offer of honorary membership in the Society: "… Being convinced that a very imperfect knowledge is generally possessed by persons on the Seaboard Section of our country, in relation to their trans-mountain brethren and of their country, I rejoiced to find an association, instituted for the purpose of defusing information of the fairest portion of our favored land, and I cannot hesitate to believe but that great facilities will be derived by the enterprising emigrant to our shores who is seeking a peaceful asylum for himself and a secure and happy establishment for his posterity … it will give me pleasure to add any feeble assistance I can give in promoting the objects of its institution…" Warner was a young Quaker bookseller and publisher of Philadelphia – he also had bookshops in Charleston and Richmond, Virginia, the latter managed by John Grigg, later founder of the Lippincott firm. As publisher, Warner's notable imprints included an 1818 edition of the Federalist Papers, and, in 1820, possibly the earliest separately issued folding map of the United States to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, based upon cartographer John Melish's classic 1819 wall map, as well as the "western detail" maps of Lewis and Clark, Humboldt and Pike. As such, it "galvanized geographic ideas" about "tenuously explored lands beyond the Rocky Mountains." The letter makes clear Warner's abiding interest in American lands to the west – and sympathy for the courageous Emigrants who were then flowing westward. Perhaps Warner shared this interest with Melish in a friendship unrecorded by history. Two years later Melish published 'Information and Advice to Emigrants to the United States, and from the Eastern to the Western States." Their sympathies were controversial at the time, especially in Connecticut, whose retained "Western Reserve" lands extending across the northern part of present day Ohio, were the center of emigration. In 1817, residents of Connecticut, "highly wrought up over the emigration problem" exerted "every influence … to stem the ever growing outward tide of fortune seekers", lured by "glowing descriptions of land speculators" who glossed over the dangers of floods and storms, and the fraudsters preying upon the innocence of the newcomers. The Western Emigration Society, led by Nathan Guilford (later to be hailed as "father" of the Ohio public school system) was, in fact formed to provide both information and philanthropic support to emigrants, though Connecticut newspapers "exposed" the organization for promoting a "deplorable species of madness" in "unhealthy regions where men worked themselves into untimely graves", unaware of the "burdensome privations of a land without churches, schools and roads." Guilford was indeed a very effective lobbyist for emigration to the West. The same month that he wrote Warner, he must have offered "honorary membership" to dozens of other Eastern notables, including then General Andrew Jackson. Those letters, and their congenial replies, appear in the Ohio Historical Society and other archival collections. Benjamin Warner's response may have been one of the most interesting. Warner died prematurely three years later at the age of 35.

Description
"After reading the Statement of Mr. Ware and Mr. Leaming with care I do not find any thing to satisfy me in legal point of view, that Mr. Townsend Sharpless is not the party against whom Mr. Budd's action must be brought. The Mayor has furnished a copy of his Record upon which Mr. Sharpless's liability is clear. If he can explain that away on the trial, we may be compelled to proceed against all the parties for a Conspiracy. But the injury done to Mr. Budd must be vindicated in some way. The conduct of Mess Ware & Leaming appears to me exceedingly reprehensible and I shall take great pleasure in exposing to the world their tergiversations in this matter. I am sorry for Mr. Sharpless but the gross wrong done my client was certainly done in his name and under the sanctions of this affirmation. Indeed the explanation of the Mayor, seem to add insult to injury as he gives it as his opinion that there was cause to suspect the goods would be found in Budd's possession." Established in 1843, the Legal Intelligencer was the oldest law journal in the United States. Wallce, its founder, and editor for nearly fifty years, was also a practicing attorney. Townsend Sharpless was a prominent Quaker merchant who was accused by Maryland slave-owners of "enticing" their slaves to escape to freedom in Pennsylvania.

"This book recounts Guru Rinpoché's historic visit to Tibet and explains his continuing significance to Buddhists. In doing so, it illustrates how a country whose powerful armies overran the capital of China and installed a puppet emperor came to abandon its aggressive military campaigns: this transformation was due to Guru Rinpoché, who tamed and converted Tibet to Buddhism and thereby changed the course of Asian history" (jacket blurb).
