Description
19/11/1800. An extremely rare and early holograph and signature of America’s greatest explorer showing his work in Michigan as paymaster for the First Regiment Meriwether Lewis served in the Virginia militia during the Whiskey Rebellion and enlisted in the regular Army in May of 1795. His career advanced rapidly from ensign (1795) to lieutenant (1799) to captain (1800). Initially assigned to General Anthony Wayne's 2nd Legion, he marched to Fort Greeneville in Ohio Territory arriving in time for the signing of the Treaty of Greenville, which formally brought an end to the Northwest Indian War. In 1800, Lewis was appointed regimental paymaster at Detroit, an important position, attached to the 1st United States Regiment. His job took him to various northwest forts and outposts, and he roamed throughout the Ohio River valley. The present document offers a glimpse of his activities. Lewis was promoted to Captain on December 5, 1800, less than a month after issuing this document. In 1801 President Jefferson asked Lewis to be his personal secretary and aide-de-camp, and in 1803 asked him to head the Lewis and Clark Expedition.[video width=""1920"" height=""1080"" mp4=""https://cdn.raabcollection.com/wp-content/uploads/20231204131300/raab_first_look-_meriwether_lewis-1080p.mp4""][/video]In August 1800, James Wilkinson was put in charge of the 1st regiment and was therefore Lewis's superior in the fall of that year and through the winter. In February 1801, Wilkinson, back East, received from Jefferson a now famous letter, for the former to hand deliver to Lewis. ""I take the liberty of asking the protection of your cover for a letter to Lieutt. Meriwether Lewis, not knowing where he may be. In selecting a private secretary, I have thought it would be advantageous to take one who possessing a knowlege of the Western country, of the army & its situation, might sometimes aid us with informations of detail, which we may not otherwise possess.""It is interesting to note here that Jefferson has no fixed address to which to address Lewis, who was either recruiting or, as was the case during this stretch, in what was then the American frontier.Autograph receipt signed ""Meriwether Lewis” in the text, in camp near of Detroit, Northwest Territory, November 19, 1800. “Received of Meriwether Lewis, Paymaster of the 1st Regiment three dollars and fifty five cents ferrying himself and party over the River Rogue.” [The River Rouge, a tributary of the Detroit River]. The receipt is also signed by Cicot (likely to be Jean Baptiste Cicot, an early settler of Detroit). It is docketed ""No. 11: $3.55: ferriage"" in a contemporary hand on verso.Meriwether Lewis’s signature is notoriously rare; we have had just a few in our decades in the field. And this particular document is rare for another reason: it’s one one of the earliest of Lewis to reach the market. A search of public sale records going back over 40 years shows just three other examples, the last comparable one being sold almost thirty ago.

Description
A Amsterdam; & se trouve à Paris: chez Vincent, Imprimeur-Libraire, rue S. Severin, 1766 First edition of a legendary rarity. Barbier and Cioranescu ascribe this work to Madame de Verzure, about whom little is known, though Quérard tells us she was the wife of a Geneva banker. She apparently wrote no other books. Contemporary mottled calf. Gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, blue marbled edges. . Two volumes in one, twelvemo. Bottom corners worn, leather worn in one spot on back cover. Otherwise a very good copy. In the dedication to Mirabeau, the author notes "Une femme qui savise décrire, & cqui ose hazarder limpression, doit se cacher avec soin, & se garder de jamais se laisser appercevoir." Madame Verzure has retired from society in order to better understand herself as woman and as a thinking person. This work, which is principally addressed to women, contains about sixty chapters of reflections on the world and her position in it. There are chapters on the passions, honor, celibacy, marriage, goodness, humor, law, pain, ennui, paternal love, one's duty in the world, truth and sincerity, notions of the soul, self-love, etc. The last two chapters, "La femme raisonnable" and "La femme du monde" present the central concern of this book: the woman of the world versus the woman of intellect: "L'une veut qu'on la croie parfaite; lautre cherche à le devenir." OCLC lists ten copies, six in North America: Harvard, Yale, Duke, Indiana, UCLA and Cal State Bakersfield.

Description
One illus. 21 folding leaves. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers (a little worn), orig. stitching. [China]: Baoshan Teng shi 寶山滕氏, 1935. The record of an ill-fated diplomatic mission in the 12th century, when the Song dynasty existed in a geopolitical context in which it faced states as powerful as itself on its northern border. This was a time of “China among equals.” The Chinese Song could no longer realistically claim to be a universal empire but had to negotiate with its competitors. Our book is part of that history. The Loyal and Upright Lord Teng, Teng Maoshi 茂實 (d. 1128), a Song official, was sent to negotiate with the Jurchens in 1126, during the time that witnessed the fall of northern China to the Jurchen Jin. Teng Maoshi was sent to cede the city of Taiyuan to the Jurchens. But when the Jurchens reached the city, they faced resistance from Song forces and thus accused the Song of not honoring their word. As the Song envoy, Teng was imprisoned and died soon thereafter. The author, Song Lian (1310-81), was one of the leading court scholars of the early Ming period. Our edition was printed with movable lead type by a descendant of Teng named Teng Gu 滕固, who added a colophon to the work (dated 1934). There is also a colophon by Zhang Dingsi 張鼎思, written in 1589 (Wanli jichou) “at the house of Lord [Teng’s] 18th-generation descendant [Teng] Jinsheng 晉生.” The Posthumous Poetry has a colophon by writer and propagandist for political reform Chen Yan 陳衍 (1856-1937), dated 1934 (jiaxu). It includes a portrait of Teng Maoshi based on a Song-period original. Nice copy. We find no copy in WorldCat.

His work often delves into existential questions, blending realism with philosophical reflection. Description
New York: Bookman Associates. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1955). First Edition. Hardcover. [minor shelfwear only; the jacket is lightly edgeworn, slightly color-shifted at spine]. (B&W photographs, maps) "A study of the political and social behavior of Polish immigrants and their children in Hamtramck, Michigan, a community which they have dominated since the first decade of the present century." Treating Hamtramck "as a sort of 'cultural island' within the Detroit Metropolitan Area," the book explains how "the principal economic base for Hamtramck, and the occasion for the swarming of the Poles into the area, was the establishment of the Dodge automobile plant on its southern border" in 1914, which contributed to Hamtramck becoming the fastest-growing community in the U.S. in the decade between 1910 and 1920. Also noted is that "the Poles took avidly to politics, and the intense rivalries among their politicians have kept the community in turmoil for over three decades." (Interestingly, the percentage of the population of Polish descent dropped from 90% in 1970 to 14.5% in 2010 -- and is probably even lower today, since, per Wikipedia, recent decades have seen the influx of "a large number of immigrants from the Middle East (especially Yemen), India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, and southeastern Europe (especially Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo)" -- to the point where, in 2013, Hamtramck became the first Muslim-majority city in the U.S., and in November 2021 became the first municipality in the U.S. to be entirely governed by Muslim-Americans (the mayor and the entire city council). ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience."
