Description
Hartford, CT: Case, Lockwood & Brainard, Printers, 1871. First Edition. Fine. 4 pp. Self-wrappers. First edition. Fine. An announcement by famous feminist Susan B. Anthony and five other suffragettes of the formation of a National Woman Suffrage and Educational Committee, and their intent to pursue recognition of voting rights for women under the 14th and 15th amendments. These were recent amendments (around three and one years old, respectively) but this salvo relies on them heavily, as well as on a taxation-without-representation argument harking back to the origins of the republic. In 1875 the Supreme Court would close the door on this line of thinking and suffragettes would have to change strategies, but this leaflet proceeds all that; it's still heady with fresh ideas and a brand new organization appealing for funds and women's names for a pledge book compiled by the NWSEC Secretary. A rare document of a brief glimmer of optimism in what would be a long, hard slog-- the struggle for equal rights-- in excellent condition.

Description
[Toronto]: A.H. Correl & Co. Propr's, Toronto Lith. Co., 1880. Pictorial broadside, oblong, 5.75" x 17". Beautiful full color lithograph advertisement featuring an elaborate scene of the "climax" engine expelling steam and hooked up to a thresher with several men working, an "economizer" engine sitting idle to the left, a background of several trees and hills, a small cottage, and a lake with a sailboat upon it. Near Fine. Robert Whitelaw [1827-1920], a native of Scotland, opened the first foundry of the Whitelaw Company in 1856 in a town west of Woodstock, Ontario. He later moved the foundry to Woodstock, was a busy businessman, and active in community affairs. In 1874, the town offered Mr. Whitelaw $8,000 to assist his planned expansion of the company; if the business remained in Woodstock for eight more years, the loan would be canceled. In addition to agricultural machinery such as steam engines and threshers, his factory made sawing machines, cheese making machines, castings and fire hydrants. Some time after the expansion, the Company became known as Whitelaw's Oxford Foundry and Engine Works.

Description
A Rotterdam,: Chez Reinier Leers, 1703., 1703. 12mo. 410, [22] pp. Three title pages (grouping the months) with engraved printer's device, indexes. Original single ruled full calf with elaborate gilt-stamped spine, five bands, and 2 red leather spine labels, all edges red speckled; binding worn with cracked but holding joints. Bookplate of Hartford Seminary Foundation. Binding as is, internally very good. Henri Basnage de Beauval was a French Huguenot historian, lexicographer, and journal editor. His Histoire des ouvrages des savans was a periodical appearing from 1687 to 1709; it was a sequel to the Nouvelles de la Republique des Lettres of Pierre Bayle. The change of title was in fact cosmetic, to avoid trouble with the publisher of the Nouvelles. Basnage himself did almost all the editorial reviews, and those of John Locke's works, in particular, did much to spread his ideas. Barbier's Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes ascribes the editorship of this to Jacques Basnage de Beauval; the Library of Congress, British Museum, and Bibliotheque Nationale catalogues ascribe the editorship to Henri Basnage, sieur de Beauval.
