Description
Raleigh, NC: Rev. M.L. Latta, 1903 [but 1924]. Revised and Expanded Edition. Octavo (23.5cm); dark green cloth titled in gilt on spine, with titles stamped in gilt on front cover within a brown double-ruled border; [viii],[31]-600pp, with a portrait frontispiece of Frederick Douglass and five inserted plates of illustrations (halftones); text is complete, despite the eccentric pagination. "An ex-slave in North Carolina who later attended Shaw University and then was for many years a schoolteacher writes primarily of his workas head of Latta University in West Raleigh, North Carolina, an institution he founded in 1892. He also tells of his experiences in the Raleigh area and alludes to his visit to England and France" (BRIGNANO 224). While the copyright page gives no indication this edition was published after 1903, Brignano notes a revised and considerably expanded edition published by Latta in 1924, mentioning events in his life after 1903, and printing long essays by Carter G. Woodson and Frederick E. Drinker, adding another 229 pages of content. Uncommon in commerce; OCLC shows 9 holdings for the 1924 edition. Not in Blockson. 84424.

Boston, MA: W.S. Best, 1918. First Edition. Octavo. 26.5cm. Publisher's bright green cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. 202pp. Strong, solid and handsome, some toning to spine and an old paper library label to tail; internally clean and fresh, front hinge a little cosmetically cracked, bookplate of the Library of the Army War College to front pastedown, additional pencil library marks to contents leaf including a withdrawal stamp dated 1939, numerous plates, some folding. A very good solid copy of a book that for some time in the early twentieth century was an indispensable reference work. Grover Cleveland Loening was one of those pioneering entrepreneurs of aviation who seems to have started out strong and just ascended from there. He managed a factory for the Wright Brothers in Dayton, became chief aeronautical engineer for the army, published this work, became vice president of the Sturtevant Aeroplane Co., founded his own company, and occupied major roles in military and civilian aviation up to WW2 when he was a consultant for Grumman, and an advisor for the N.A.C.A.

Description
New York: The British Book Centre, 1954. Sixth Printing Stated. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's yellow cloth titled in red to spine and front board. Dustjacket. Some light wear and scuffing to the extremities of the cloth, minor bumping to spine ends, in a dustjacket which is bright and clean, but has seen some wear, the most obvious defect being a triangular portion of loss to the upper edge of the front panel, interfering with the word "Flying", there are some other minor chips and creases. The loss to the wrapper relegates this copy to a good, solid and readable copy. Internally clean. A dual effort where Leslie investigates the history and possible ancient origins of flying saucers legends, while Adamski gives his personal eye witness account of a UFO in Mount Palomar, CA.

Lightning Arranger - Device for arranging orchestrations and transposing music

Description
Allentown PA: Lightning Arranger, 1931. An oblong 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" celluloid device with two (2) side by side wheels, with a eight (8) window openings on each side. One side is designed to find dominant and sub-dominant chords by setting both wheels to key. It includes Seventh Chords and Major Chords. The reverse is for all instruments including pianos and violins tuned in C. One wheel represents Ninth Chords, the other Minor Chords. Originally had a booklet explaining chord progression and instructions for transposing and outlines chord structure. Invented by Samuel "Skip" Rapoport, the Lightning Arranger, was a device for arranging orchestrations and transposing music. Rapoport said his device arranges music mathematically, the way music is arranged. It works by turning a wheel on the device, which in turn reveals the appropriate information on another part of the cardboard unit. It sells for $6 and was manufactured for him by a New Jersey company. The arranger comes with a booklet that explains chord progression, provides instructions for transposing and outlines chord structure. It claims to be a simplified method for arranging orchestrations. Literature on the device claims it's good for musicians, arrangers of music, band and choir directors, orchestra leaders, music instructors, supervisors, students of music, singers, accompanists, music teachers, beginners and composers.
