Description
Philadelphia: Re-Printed by Samuel Harrison Smith, 1791. JEFFERSON, Thomas. Being an Answer to Mr. Burke's Attack on the French Revolution. Second Edition. [First American]. Philadelphia: Re-Printed by Samuel Harrison Smith, 1791. [Together with] PAINE, Thomas. Rights of Man. Part the Second. Combining Principles and Practice. Second Philadelphia edition. Philadelphia: Printed by and For Messrs. Printed by and for Messr. H. and P. Rice, no. 50, Market-Street, and S.H. Smith, 1792. First American Edition of part one of Thomas Paine's famous work, Rights of Man, printed the same year as the first London edition. Second American edition, printed the same year as the first American of part two. Misunderstandings of which edition Part one is are common as the title-page states Second edition, although it is the first printing in America. "The full title of the first American printing, designated on the title-page as the 'Second Edition, reads Rights of Man. Being an Answer to Mr. Burke's Attack on the French Revolution, by Thomas Paine, Secretary for Foreign Affairs to Congress in the American War and author of the work intitled Common Sense. Philadelphia: Re-printed by Samuel Harrison Smith. M.DCC.XCI. While TJ ordered three or four copies of this edition, none owned by him is known to exist. See Sowerby, No. 2826." ("Editorial Note: Rights of Man: The "Contest of Burke and Paine ... in America" Founders Online, National Archives). It is our assumption that because Smith was a relatively new printer, he printed "Second Edition" on the title-page as this was it's second time being printed, even thought it was the first time it was printed in America. The second American edition states "Second Philadelphia edition, from fourth London edition, corrected and enlarged" and contains one less page. Octavo (8 1/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 206 x 123 mm). [1]-105, [1, blank]; viii,[1],10-96 pp. Part one is dedicated to George Washington as in Jordan's London editions and part two is dedicated to the Marquis de Lafayette. The last true first London edition to sell at auction (one of just about 100 copies that were sold before the run was recalled hours after release) which was a 1st edition of part one and a 2nd edition of part two, sold for $250,000. Here we have the first American first edition of part one. We could find no other copy besides this current copy at auction since 1911. Two volumes bound together in full maroon morocco. Boards and spine elaborately tooled in gilt. Spine with black morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Text block of part one with some minor toning and part two with some mild spotting as expected of American paper from this time. Minor corner stain to outer lower corner on pages 97-106. Overall a very good copy of both parts. About 4 weeks after Jordan's London edition was printed, a few copies arrived in Pennsylvania and one such copy landed in the hands of Thomas Jefferson by way of James Madison who had received it from John Beckley whom has initiated arrangements for publication in Philadelphia. Beckley requested Jefferson return the copy to J.B. Smith (the printer's father) when he had finished reading it. There was a bit of confusion to Jefferson as to the identity of JB Smith, thinking instead he was the printer's brother and therefore a stranger to Jefferson. Jefferson dashed off a note to accompany the book back to Smith and upon receipt of the published pamphlet just days later, Jefferson was "thunderstruck" to see excerpts from his note printed in the publisher's preface. Samuel Smith quoted Jefferson who stated "I am extremely pleased to find it will be reprinted here, and that something is at length to be publicly said against the political heresies which have sprung up among us. I have no doubt our citizens will rally a second time round the standard of Common Sense." Smith did not name Jefferson but rather identified him as Secretary of State. "In identifying the Secretary of State as the one who had transmitted 'a copy of this Pamphlet for republication' and omitting the explanation that this had been done at Beckley's desire, Smith permitted his readers the plausible inference that it was Jefferson who had sponsored publication of the pamphlet." ("Editorial Note: Rights of Man: The "Contest of Burke and Paine ... in America" Founders Online, National Archives). Jefferson's statement as published without approval no doubt sparked much conflict between those whos views sided with Jefferson and those who felt as if they were being accused of "heresy." "Thus introduced, Paine's Rights of Man fell like a thunderclap on the quiet capital. The expressions of the Secretary of State more than the pamphlet itself, we may be sure, took precedence in the political gossip of the boardinghouses, the taverns and the Philadelphia dinner tables." ("Editorial Note: Rights of Man: The "Contest of Burke and Paine ... in America" Founders Online, National Archives). ESTC W36410, W36434. Evans 23664, 24654. Printing and the Mind of Man 241. Description
Tokyo: Shinkosha, 1924. Very good, overall.. [2],4,[2],4,[26],192,[4]pp., plus three folding maps at rear. Original printed cloth boards, with contemporary glassine wrapper affixed to pastedowns; in original cardstock box with printed paper labels. Minor fading and soiling to cloth. Early ownership inscription and owner's ink stamps on rear pastedown. Light toning internally. Moderate wear and a couple of repaired tears to card box, but still a nice example. "A guidebook for Hawaii based on personal impressions, with notes on Hawaii's history, industry, agriculture, education, social organizational activities, and individuals."— The Japanese in Hawaii. According to the same reference, the author was an early immigrant to Hawaii and a promoter of the islands to other citizens of Japan. In his introduction to the present book, Uehara explains that he is offering a guide book to the islands because he was not aware of any other guides published in Japanese and most Japanese visitors to the United States relied on Baedekers, which did not include the Hawaiian Islands. The book is illustrated with 26 half-tone photographs of Hawaiian scenes, including surfers, Japanese immigrants, agriculture, and Hawaiian people and with scattered, additional in-text images. The three folding maps at the rear delineate Oahu, Kuwai, and Hawaii. A rare and significant guidebook to 1920s Hawaii by a Japanese immigrant to the islands -- OCLC locates only three copies, two in Japan and one at the University of Hawaii. The Japanese in Hawaii 370.

Description
New Castle: M. Angus & Son, 1801. First edition. Featuring eight woodcuts by Thomas Bewick. Nineteenth century pebbled cloth with gilt to spine. Yellow coated endpapers. Corners gently bumped and some bubbling to cloth of front board; rear hinge a bit tender and rear pastedown faintly soiled. Internally pleasing, with some offsetting to the title page and occasional light scattered foxing as is typical in imprints of this period. Some leaves unopened. A scarce work on educating both men and women in elocution, OCLC reports copies at only 10 institutions in the U.S. At the turn of the century, there was a strong sense that a good citizen must be an eloquent citizen. To train the rising generation, elocution and rhetoric manuals began to flood the market. Yet women were often neglected by the authors of these manuals, who focused on helping young men "rise in the world by demonstrating how to speak correctly and confidently...Most elocution texts only considered males, as they alone were being trained for public life. Women were routinely satirized for their incorrect use of language. The ignorance of the best known caricature, Mrs. Malaprop in R. B. Sheridan's The Rivals, was perpetually horrifying" (Franklin). One of the earliest examples of an elocution book written by a woman for women was Mary Wollstonecraft's pseudonymously published Lady's Preceptor (1792), which predated her cornerstone feminist tract Vindication of the Rights of Women. Within a decade, works like the present New Preceptor began to recognize and address this educational gap. Echoing the title of Mr. Cresswick's (Wollstonecraft's) work, R. Kay drew on his own experience as an instructor to empower both men and women to be competent speakers. Notably, Kay does not overtly acknowledge what a progressive move he makes. Never does he make an argument for including the ladies in these lesson. The result is simply the assumption that any youth of England should be given the opportunity for clear self expression. A well organized guide, signaling a change in women's education.

New York: Hearst's International Library Co, [1915]. First American Edition. 280 x 215 mm. (11 x 8 1/2"). 187, [1] pp. HANDSOME DARK BLUE MOROCCO, GILT, covers framed by decorative roll and multiple gilt rules, floral spray cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments with central floral spray within a delicate frame, gilt lettering, PICTORIAL DOUBLURES using plates from the book (Arthur Rackham's "Unconquerable" at front; Waterlow's "Harvest Moon" at rear), each picture with gilt tooling at edge, within a wide frame of red and dark blue morocco tooled in gilt, blue morocco hinges, ivory watered silk free endleaves, all edges gilt. WITH 25 PLATES, consisting of a photographic frontispiece portrait of King Albert, 14 color plates mounted on heavy stock, and 10 black & white plates printed on glossy stock, almost all of these with original tissue guards. Just the faintest hint of shelf wear, one color plate with minor tear, but still a fine and handsome copy--clean and fresh internally, in a lustrous decorative binding. This sumptuously illustrated publication celebrating Belgium and its King Albert I is offered here in a lovely contemporary binding. Assembled in the early days of the First World War, this publication aimed to raise broader awareness and support for the plight of the Belgians at the hands of the Kaiser's armies, as well as honoring the nation's bravery. Novelist Hall Cain (1853-1931), who edited the anthology, wrote in the introduction that "Belgium has fought not only her own battle but also the battle of France, the battle of Great Britain and the battle of Freedom. By her brave stand against incalculable odds she has added a new and inspiring chapter to the heroic annals of humanity and perhaps lifted to a higher level the future destinies of man." Following the 1914 British edition by only a few months, our American printing includes a note that the publisher's proceeds are to be donated to the Belgian Fund. "King Albert's Book" includes text, music, and illustrations by nearly 240 contributors, including religious leaders (Aga Khan, the Archbishop of Canterbury), politicians (William Howard Taft, Winston Churchill), authors (Rudyard Kipling, Baroness Orczy), scientists (Guglielmo Marconi, Flinders Petrie), composers (Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns), and, of course, artists: the plates include works by Arthur Rackham, Charles Dana Gibson, Kay Nielsen, Maxfield Parrish, Edmund Dulac, and others. Two of these plates, by Rackham and Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow, have been mounted as doublures in the present copy. The luxury binding, though unsigned, was evidently the work of a very skilled artisan. The quality of the finishing is excellent, and the design is harmonious, though sufficiently restrained to be respectful of the subject matter..

Chose Commune, 2021. First edition. New. 27 x 21 cm. 20 pages. 16 color photographic reproductions. Hardcover leporello with ribbon on the spine to hang book vertically. "The book Painting reveals 16 unpublished colour photographs by Toshio Shibata, a Japanese photographer who is known for his rigorous and meticulous compositions. The representation of intimate yet spectacular landscapes — natural, and especially artificial — are at the core of Shibata’s work. In keeping with the tradition of painting that Shibata studied in his early years in 1968, this book celebrates the abstraction of beauty. It has been designed in a concertina format that can also be turned into a suspended object — just like a kakemono, a Japanese unframed scroll painting made on paper or silk and displayed as a wall hanging" (the publisher).
