The Realist was a countercultural magazine of "social-political-religious criticism and satire" that was nationally distributed at news stands from 1958-2001. The Realist provided a format for extreme satire in its articles, cartoons and Krassner's editorials, but it also carried more traditionally serious material in articles and interviews. Articles in this issue include; "Of Transvestites and Other Epicenes" is a two page spread on transvestism, opening with a story about a crossdressing man who was arrested for "having his face painted,discolored, covered, or concealed, or being otherwise disguised in a manner calculated to prevent his being identified.." and quotes Transvestia who warns their readers of the dangers of going out in public. The article concludes that the youth of the 1960s cultural and social revolution use these means of gender expression as a very personal anxiety relief in a rapidly changing world; "Genetic Faux Pas" a satirical story about a child born genderless and how that affects traditional societal norms; and "Batman and Robin Were Lovers..." which delves into the psychological subliminal homoeroticism between the two comic book characters. Other articles include; "Some Facts About the War in Vietnam" discussing the atrocities of the war and the negatives of the U.S.'s involvement; "The Kennedy Body Snatchers" discussing the recent death of President Kennedy. Some minor sunning, text and pages are clean and crisp. Overall very good condition.
