Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1923 Two volumes. Foreword by Lady Gregory. Later American edition ("Third and Popular Edition"). Signed and inscribed by Hemingway to his cousin, Ruth White Lowry, on front free endpapers of both volumes. Volume I: "Dear Ruth: - These good, solid books are to throw after the American Poetry book at the head of [strikeout] any one [sic] who criticizes the management -- Ernest."; Volume II: "Dear Ruth - This is the second solid volume to throw after the first - Ernest."; Ruth Lowry's ownership signature in pencil on front pastedown of Vol. I. Publisher's dark blue cloth, with title labels to spines printed in black; lacking dust jackets. Very good set, with some toning to spines and labels, light wear to spine ends, light rubbing to front board of Vol. I, Bennett Schneider bookseller tickets to both rear pastedowns, and Bennett Schneider bookmark laid in to Vol. II. Overall, a lovely set, inscribed twice by Hemingway. From the personal library of Hemingway's cousin, Ruth White Lowry. Wilfrid Scawen Blunt (1840 - 1922) was an English poet, diplomat, and outspoken critic of colonialism. Blunt married Lady Anne Noel, the granddaughter of Lord Byron, in 1869, and together they ran the Crabbet Arabian Stud, a prominent horse breeding farm in Sussex, which imported exceptional Arabian horses from the Middle East. Blunt's marriage to Lord Byron's granddaughter was emblematic of his broader aspiration to emulate Byron: much like the renowned Romantic poet, Blunt was a strikingly handsome womanizer, a social outcast, and a world traveler who fought for idealistic causes. Some of the chapter titles in My Diaries illustrate the sweeping range of Blunt's interests and adventures: "A Visit to Greece in 1888," "Egypt under Tewfik in 1889," "A Visit to Tunis and Tripoli," "Satan Absolved - The Boer War," "Literature and Politics," "The French Invade Morocco," and "The War with Germany Declared." Blunt published many works in his lifetime, including The Love Sonnets of Proteus (1881), The Future of Islam (1882), and Satan Absolved: A Victorian Mystery (1899). Blunt and Hemingway were similar in personality and lifestyle, in that they are both remembered not only for their literary contributions, but also for embracing a comprehensive life and valuing the wisdom gained from experiences. . Signed. Later American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Description
San Francisco: P.J. Thomas, 1885. Original wraps. Very Good +. The 1885 1st thus, the 1st printing offered as a stand-alone publication. Clean and VG+ in its printed beige wrappers, with light chipping to the front panel's lower tip and very light wear along the spine crown. Octavo, 95 pgs. Includes the architectural rendering of a Chinatown tenement but lacks the colored fold-out map of Chinatown as called for (Cowen, pg. 204). Also includes a compendium of testimony and reports concerning the conditions of Chinatown tenements, businesses, gambling houses, brothels and opium dens. The committee claims to have visited every room in Chinatown; a list of gambling houses even enumerates their escape routes. Oftern colorful, overwrought descriptions paint a sordid picture of depravity and illness. Underground organizations are said to pay for murder, posting Chinese-language broadsides offering rewards to killers. Concluding recommendations include the demand to force Chinese immigrants to live at the same standard of living as white laborers, undercutting the "corrosive" effects of their presence. Materials of interest to the modern researcher include detailed listings of manufacturers in Chinatown, with specific addresses.

Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1932. Reprint. Hardcover. [a lovely copy with no significant wear, would be Fine but for a couple of very slightly scrunched lower page corners and a one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief comment on front endpaper, just below which is a rubber-stamped name of a previous owner; the jacket is bright and attractive, showing very slight edgewear and a little ink-smudging on the front flap]. The second book in this tetralogy of mystery novels set in New York, featuring Drury Lane, "famous actor and criminal investigator, who, after retiring from the stage, lived in medieval splendor in his 'ancient' caste on the Hudson, and worked out his own theories of crime detection." This one concerns the Hatter family -- the "mad Hatters" -- whose "home on Washington Square came to be as famous in New York as the Wendell house or the home of Hetty Green. Then suddenly, just as the Hatter legends began to abate, there started a series of sinister attempts on the lives of members of the doomed family and concurrent publicity that spattered their names across the front pages of every newspaper." Enter Drury Lane, to solve the case. Although it wasn't yet publicly known that "Barnaby Ross" and "Ellery Queen" were one and the same author (two cousins from Brooklyn), attentive readers would have picked up on the fact that "Ross" employed the same "Challenge to the Reader" narrative device as "Queen" used in his early novels, that of presenting readers with all the known facts necessary for them to solve the mysteries themselves in advance of the book's protagonist. Reportedly, Dannay and Lee had some fun with their dual-dual pseudonyms at the time these books came out, appearing in a series of public debates in which Dannay impersonated "Ross" and Lee portrayed "Queen," both wearing masks to preserve their anonymity. (Although I've not seen it stated anywhere, it's possible that the character of Drury Lane and his "castle" may have been inspired by the actor William Gillette (1853-1937), famous for his stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, who constructed and lived in his retirement just such a dwelling, located on the Connecticut River.) Some years later, after the "Ross"/"Queen" masquerade was revealed, the four books in this group were reprinted under Queen's name; jacketed copies of the original "Ross" versions (even the G&D reprints) are exceedingly scarce. (The publisher of the first editions was the Viking Press, perhaps a calculated choice to further distance "Ross" from "Queen," who was published at that time by the Frederick A. Stokes Company.) NOTE that although I've dated this book as 1932 (the date that appears on the title page), that seems to have been a carry-over from the original Viking edition; this particular printing likely dates from the mid-1930s. .
