Description
Paris: Pagnerre, 1850. Thirteenth edition. Revised, corrected and augmented with a comparative examination of democracy in the United States and Switzerland, and an appendix. Text in French. Inscribed by the author: "à M. Courbis offert par l'auteur AT." Bound in a contemporary French binding of green quarter morocco over paper boards, marbled end-papers. Two volumes bound together in one, collating: viii, 512; viii, 476. Binding with slight chipping at the head of the spine, otherwise in excellent condition. Besides the present example, only one other inscribed copy of this 1850 revised edition can be found in the auction record, selling for 11,875 euro in 2013. De Tocqueville's seminal work on American government, first printed the same year in Paris. De Tocqueville, a French aristocrat, visited America between 1831 and 1832, ostensibly to study the penal system, although his interest was considerably broader. It seems logical that France would look to America as a beacon of hope for a successful democracy. After France embraced the goals of equality and democracy in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution, it found itself first in a dictatorship under Napoleon and then in one constitutional monarchy after another during the years following. De Tocqueville's astute observation of several aspects of American society and culture provides an invaluable lens of foreign perspective on our young nation's political growth. Democracy in America was an immediate and sustained success. Almost from the beginning it enjoyed the reputation of being the most acute and perceptive discussion of the political and social life of the United States ever published. Whether perceived as a textbook of American political institutions, an investigation of society and culture, a probing of the psyche of the United States, or a study of the actions of modern democratic society, the book has maintained its place high within the pantheon of political writing. "No better study of a nation's institutions and culture than Tocqueville's Democracy in America has ever been written by a foreign observer; none perhaps as good" (The New York Times). Library of Congress: A Passion for Liberty, Alexis de Tocqueville on Democracy & Revolution (Washington, 1989).

Description
London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. First edition. Near Fine. Bound in the publisher's full crushed purple morocco, all edges gilt. Stamped in gilt on the spine and with blind rules on the boards and spine. With original yellow-coated end papers. A lovely, Near Fine copy overall. One spot of offsetting on the first couple leaves, otherwise quite clean internally. The book complete and entirely unrestored. Collating [xvi], 609, [1], complete with half title and 43 inserted plates. A few of Hatton and Cleaver's first issue points to the later half of text; all plates in the Phiz states and with the later Chapman & Hall imprints. Given that the early parts continued to be reprinted (and corrected) while the later parts were produced, it is common for the cloth-bound (or publisher's morocco-bound copies) to have most of the earlier misprints corrected, as here. Dickens' first novel, showcasing his astounding talent for sketching charming, sympathetic characters, helped to launch his career. "Its main literary value and appeal was formed by its numerous memorable characters...The Pickwick Papers are mostly a series of humorous misadventures, with a bit of satire, that give some insight into the mores of Victorian society. You can witness Dickens here working on a few prototypes that will show up in later novels...you also see his social consciousness manifesting itself" (Inverarity). An important early work that remains beloved by Dickens' fans for its sensationalism and humor. Near Fine.

Description
New York: The Viking Press, 1955 First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Miller to American theater critic and editor Otis Guernsey Jr. on front free endpaper: "For Otis Guernsey / With my respect / Arthur Miller." Publisher's red cloth and red patterned boards, with spine lettered in white; in the original black dust jacket designed by Robert Hallock, with a red bridge illustration to the front panel, lettered in white and red. About fine book, with some offsetting to endpapers, and a couple of small bumps to board edges; good or better unclipped dust jacket, with light fading to spine, a couple of minor scratches to front panel, light soiling to spine and rear panel, small closed tear to bottom edge of rear panel, and light spotting to jacket flaps. Overall, a great presentation copy. From Otis Guernsey Jr.'s personal library. A View from the Bridge tells the story of Italian American Eddie Carbone as he harbors two family members who have immigrated to the United States illegally. The play first appeared as a one-act play alongside A Memory of Two Mondays, and was produced by Martin Ritt on September 29, 1955 at the Coronet Theatre in New York. Despite Miller's reverence for the format of the one-act play, he later revised and extended A View From a Bridge so that it consisted of two acts. Otis Guernsey Jr. (1918 - 2001) was an influential American theater critic and editor, who worked at the New York Herald Tribune for 19 years (1941 - 1960), moving up the ranks from copy boy to drama critic and arts editor. From 1964 to 2000, he edited 36 volumes of the highly respected Best Plays Theater Yearbook series and released highly regarded annual lists of his 10 favorite plays of the year. A member of the New York Drama Critics Circle, Pulitzer Committee for Drama, and Tony Award nominating committee, he was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2001. Otis Guernsey Jr. was a big proponent of Miller's work. In a New York Times article, he's quoted as saying that Miller's Death of a Salesman is "the best play written in my lifetime." Elaborating, he says, "'It shocked us all to realize that the American dream was not enough and that we never found what it was we should be pursuing" (Dec. 22, 1987). He also helped bring Death of a Salesman to television in 1966 while serving as a CBS consultant. . Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
