Description
12 columns per page, 23 characters per column. Printed in Hangul & Chinese characters throughout. 56; 48; 55; 50; 62 numbered folding leaves. Five vols. Large 8vo (330 x 215 mm.), orig. wrappers (wrappers somewhat rubbed), old stitching. Kyŏngsang: Provincial Government Offices, 1862. A scarce translation into Korean, printed in Hangul and Chinese characters throughout, of the main text of the Document Classic, one of the oldest texts in the Confucian canon. It has been traditionally ascribed to several authors, including the Duke of Zhou. The Document Classic (or Book of Documents) contains documents purporting to originate with the earliest Chinese rulers, with many documents in the form of addresses by the kings or their ministers. This Korean translation was printed at the provincial government offices of Kyŏngsang in southeastern South Korea, probably in 1862. The translation appears to have been first published in 1820. Like other vernacular translations of classical Confucian texts, this book was probably intended as a tool for educating readers with limited classical Chinese literacy. The book does not contain the scholarly apparatus (commentaries and illustrations) seen in classical Chinese editions produced in Chosŏn for an educated readership. What this book does that those editions do not do is to give the Korean pronunciation for all the Chinese characters of the original text. Furthermore, in lieu of commentary, every passage of original text is followed by a Korean translation. In the translation, the original Chinese characters have been moved around as required by Korean word order and supplemented by vernacular Korean words and grammatical particles. The Korean transcription of the title differs from that seen in the 1820 edition of Sŏjŏn ŏnhae held at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (copies of the same edition are also held at Changsŏgak [Jangseogak] in Seoul, call number MF35-1293~94, and Kyujanggak, call number 74, 140, 302-305, etc.). Our copy says /se tyen en hoi/ (Yale romanization for the transcription of Middle Korean), whereas the Berlin copy says /sye cyen en hoi/. The syllable sye, used in the Berlin copy, is more archaic than se (i.e., sŏ), seen in ours. Conversely, the Berlin copy’s cyen is closer to modern Korean cen (i.e., chŏn) than our copy’s tyen. A cursory comparison between the Korean portion of the main text did not reveal any differences, however; it appears to be the same translation. Perhaps for this reason, no mention is made of any peculiarities of the Korean text in our edition in the detailed catalogue of linguistic sources held at Kyujanggak, which also holds a copy of our edition (call number 奎 12216-3). See Sŏul Taehakkyo Kyujanggak, ed., Kyujanggak sojang ŏmunhak charyo: ŏhak p’yŏn: haesŏl, 178. Our copy carries the date imsul 壬戌, a year in the 60-year cycle. The Kyujanggak catalogue conjectures that it corresponds to 1862 (as opposed to 1802, etc.), and we believe it is correct. Fine set. Some light dampstaining towards the ends of several of the volumes. References Sŏul Taehakkyo Kyujanggak, ed., Kyujanggak sojang ŏmunhak charyo: ŏhak p’yŏn: haesŏl. Seoul: T'aehaksa, 2001.

Description
England, ca. 1375. 287 x 198 mm. (11 1/4 x 7 3/4). Single column, 32 lines in a small rounded English gothic hand, with rubrics in the margins. Rubrics in red, running title in red, paragraph marks in red or blue, two initials measuring two lines in height and colored blue with red penwork. See: P. E. Beichner, "Aurora, Petri Rigae Biblia Versificata, A Verse Commentary on the Bible." ◆Remnants of mounting tape in top margin of recto, but a really excellent specimen, the hand very clear, the ink especially rich, and the vellum extremely clean and quite bright. Written in a gothic hand heavily influenced by the English secretarial style, this leaf comes from a copy of the "Aurora," a commentary on the Bible in verse form written in the late 12th century by French poet Petrus Riga (1140-1209), a canon of Rheims cathedral. Although little is known about the author's life, Riga's text became immensely popular throughout Europe and was routinely studied in Medieval universities. According to Beichner, "for those who could read Latin, it supplied Scriptural lore in a popular form and it also served as a book of popular theology, devotional reading, moral instruction, and entertainment. Its influence was propagated by teachers, preachers, and lexicographers, by poets and other writers. It was studied, imitated, translated, and quoted. Not only was it widely read in monasteries and convents but it was also recommended reading for the sons of nobles." It is interesting to note that although Riga's work was copied numerous times in the 13th century, copies from the later Medieval period, such as the present work, are uncommonly rare. The parent manuscript containing our leaf was previously in the possession of the Dukes of Westminster, and was sold at Sotheby's on 11 July 1966 (lot 229), when it was advertised as having 267 leaves (missing the first gathering plus 13 other leaves). Bookseller Francis Edwards acquired the manuscript at that sale, removed three damaged leaves, and sold the remainder. It was thereafter broken up and dispersed. Several sister leaves are now in the collections of Marquette University, Lawrence University, and the University of South Carolina..

Description
Dublin: Typographia Academiae, 1746. 202 x 122 mm. (8 x 4 7/8"). 2 p.l., 136 pp. ATTRACTIVE NEAR-CONTEMPORARY RED STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, VERY PROBABLY BY ROGER PAYNE, covers with single gilt rule border, raised bands, top and fore edge gilt, other edge untrimmed, yellow endpapers. Housed in a later black cloth slipcase. Title page ruled in red, and with engraved vignette. Pastedown with armorial bookplate of Joseph Neeld; front free endpaper with armorial bookplate of Vincent Lloyd-Russell. Dibdin II, 156 ("a very correct and beautiful edition"). ◆Just a little wear at spine ends and corners, contents faintly browned at top edge of leaves, title a bit soiled, two leaves rather foxed, otherwise in fine condition, the leather still lustrous, and the text clean and fresh. Although this elegantly simple binding is not signed, we are convinced that it was executed by the celebrated Roger Payne. According to Cyril Davenport's indispensable monograph on the binder, a crucial technique developed by Payne "with the object of intensifying the visibility of the natural markings" of morocco can be seen to full effect here, particularly given the volume's simplicity of design. Payne had originally followed the French custom of ironing his thinly pared moroccos to smooth out the natural grain, making it more receptive to gilt tooling. However, as Davenport reports, "in due time he became aware of the decorative effect of the natural lines and dots which appear all over the surface of the skin." By dampening the morocco slightly and hand-rolling it vigorously, he was able to achieve "a permanent surface configuration like a series of small, more or less parallel, wavy lines, which is now known as 'straight grain', largely found, for the first time, on many of Payne's finest bindings." (Davenport, p. 44) In Nixon's study of bookbindings in the Broxbourne Library, one can see a (decorated) binding with the same distinctive straight-grain morocco in the plate on p. 195. Nixon notes that Payne did about 50 very plain bindings, tooled only with simple gilt or blind rules, for one of his major clients, the extraordinarily discriminating Rev. Clayton Mordaunt Cracherode (1730-99) of Christ Church, Oxford. This collector bequeathed his books to the British Library, in a gift characterized by De Ricci as "one of the most valuable . . . that the Museum has ever received." Nixon notes that the Eton College Library has a number of Baskerville Press books from the collection of A. M. Storer, all bound in "plain red straight-grain morocco signed: PAYNE RELIGAVIT." According to Nixon, these were done mostly between 1790-92, and also feature the flat green sewing band and plain colored endpapers seen here. One of the most famous of all English bookbinders, Roger Payne (1738-97) was apprenticed to the Eton bookseller Joseph Pote, then moved to London, where he first worked as a bookseller before establishing his bindery. Much of his work was commissioned by two clients: Rev. Cracherode and the celebrated bibliophile George John, second Earl Spencer (1758-1834), called by De Ricci "one of the greatest book collectors . . . in the history of the world" (his books are now in the John Rylands Library). The text here is a collection of 16 satires by the great Roman poet Juvenal (ca. 60 - ca. 130) and six satires by the short-lived Stoic Persius (34-62) that has provided inspiration for a number of poets intent upon denouncing the vices of society. Among many other examples, Johnson's "London" clearly borrows from Juvenal's third satire, which shows Megalopolis (i.e., Rome) as the seat of vice and corruption. Our volume was formerly owned by the fabulously wealthy Joseph Neeld (1789-1856), whose 1828 inheritance of £800,000 (nearly £73 million in today's money) allowed him to purchase the Victorian Gothic mansion Grittleton House and fill it with collections of books, art, and antiques..

Paris: Sazerac et Duval, Engelmann, Langlumè & Brossier, , 1824. First Edition of the Illustrator's First Book One Year in the Life of a Young Man Depicted in Seventeen Hand-Colored Lithograph Plates ADAM, Victor. Un An de la Vie d un Jeune Homme. Histoire véritable en 17 Chapitres. Escrits par lui-même et Lithographiés par Victor Adam. Paris: Sazerac et Duval, Engelmann, Langlumè & Brossier, 1824. First edition. Folio (13 9/16 x 10 3/8 inches; 345 x264 mm.). Lithograph title-page and seventeen superb hand-colored lithograph plates printed by Langlumé. Some occasional light marginal foxing, plate 10 with two neatly repaired small closed tears to lower blank margin. All plates with the blind stamp of the publisher Sazerac et Duval in lower blank margin. Small circular library stamp of Bernard Franck at foot of title-page and also on front free endpaper. Contemporary quarter dark-green scored calf over green paper boards. Smooth spine ruled in gilt, tan morocco label lettered in gilt, board edges worn. With the bookplate of celebrated collector Bernard Franck on front free endpaper. An excellent example of a very rare suite of hand-colored lithographs by Victor Adam. Victor Adam (1801-1865) is better known for his later works of pictorial journalism or for his many lithographs of military history than for his early works of fashion and society life. "His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time such as Un an dans la vie de jeune homme. This series is a sort of bourgeois rake's progress. A young man from the country comes to Paris to sample its pleasures. He acquires a new wardrobe; buys a horse; is duped by gamblers, makes a conquest of a pretty lady; exclaims, 'Jasmin! she seemed so artless,' as he lies recovering from the resulting malady; is imprisoned for debt; writes at last to 'the old one,' a buxom woman of means; and is accepted by her in the final plate. The series is unusual among the albums of the time in that it tells a consecutive story, and it certainly has more spirit and finish than Adam's usual work" (Ray). A lovely copy of the first book by this gifted painter and illustrator. Very scarce. Bernard Franck (1849-1924) Born in Paris, Franck was a veteran of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War, during which he was awarded the Medaille Militaire. He was an industrialist, specializing in the manufacturing of military equipment. His success in business enabled him to become an inveterate collector. He amassed his vast collection over 45 years from 1875 to 1920. The collection consisted of 18th Century and early 19th Century objects - miniature portraits (many emphasizing military subjects), medals and decorations, armory, uniforms, paintings, engravings, a variety of bibelots. Besides the miniature portraits, especially noteworthy was Franck's collection of Carnets de Bal (dance cards). He sold this collection to J.P. Morgan around 1910. Before doing so, he had the collection reproduced in an album entitled "Collection de 124 carnets de bal du XVIIIe siecle/formee par M.Bernard Franck a Paris de l'annee 1875 au 23 avril 1902". Only 20 albums were produced, of which one is in the Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum and one in the Morgan Library, autographed by Franck to Morgan. Franck died in 1924. The collection that follows has been held within the family since that time. me. The Plates: 1. J'arrive! (I arrive!) 2. Je ne me reconnais plus. (I do not recognize myself anymore.) 3. C'est superbe! (It is superb!) 4. Elle me regarde! Dieu quel bonheur! (She's looking at me! God what happiness!) 5. C'est une femme honnête. (She is an honest woman.) 6. Je ne pouvais pas aller à pied. (I couldn't walk.) 7. C'est à qui m'aura. (Who's going to get me?) 8. Comment Docteur! (How Doctor!) 9. Jasmin!...elle avait l'air si ingénu!! Description
Paris: chez Boulanger, 1774. Oblong miniature (70 x 36 mm., binding 72 x 38 mm.). [15] leaves, entirely engraved, all but the first and last leaves printed on both sides (on sheets that were cut up and glued to each other). No title, first and  last two pages with hexastichs honoring a princess named Thérèse (“Therese Souveraine”), calendar  (on [2]v-[14]r) laid out longitudinally, creating twelve page openings, each with an etched genre scene, the month of January dated 1775. A few of the scenes slightly off-center, shaving the cartouches. Last leaf on thick card. The figures in the scene for September, showing two women bathing, slightly erased and colored with pale green and pink wash in an attempt to hide their nudity. Contemporary case binding of gold-tooled red morocco over pasteboard, sides with rocaille roll border and central gold-blocked arms of Marie Thérèse de Savoie as Countess of Artois (OHR 2551), spine gold-tooled, gilt edges, blue endleaves; contemporary gold-tooled red morocco silk-lined two-part pull-off case (non-matching, slightly rubbed). . *** A fine association copy of a very rare miniature “strip” calendar, (possibly) printed for and (definitely) bound for Marie-Antoinette’s sister-in-law. The calendar was printed on a single sheet that was cut into strips. These were then apparently pasted together and the whole was attached to the case binding by the endleaves, which are simply glued to each board. The imprint extends across the bottom of the first three page openings (A Paris, chez Boulanger rue du Pt. / Pont chez Mr Dufresne Marchand / Mercier). Each opening shows a month, in columns with from left to right the day of the week, the day of the month, the Saint for each day, and the phases of the moon, indicated by the abbreviations NL (nouvelle lune), PQ (premier quartier), PL (pleine lune), and DQ (dernier quartier). At the top of each monthly calendar is an etched image within decorative cartouches, showing a woman at her toilette, apple-picking, a rural family around a fire, girls and boys making garlands and on swings, etc.  Independent miniature calendars apparently began to circulate in the 1770s. Originally reduced versions of wall calendars, they were usually cut up, as in this example, and often handsomely bound, although they could also be used, uncut, as small wall calendars. The little volumes, which appear to have been of a standard size, “could be comfortably slipped into inside pockets or placed on the dressing tables of society ladies” (Grand-Carteret, pp. xxxiv-xxxv). Since they lack titles, their presence in libraries or collections is hard to ascertain, but they are scarce, and as ephemeral items surviving examples are often unique. I have had another copy of a strip calendar, for 1772 (also probably produced by the almanac publisher Boulanger), which belonged to Marie-Thérèse’s sister Marie-Joséphine, and which has verses and pictures honoring the recent royal marriages. While the present edition is more generically illustrated, the verses that surround the calendar honor the charms of a princess who is “bien digne d’être Reine” (worthy of being Queen) and who is named at the end as Thérèse. (At this time Marie-Antoinette had not yet had any children, making Louis XVI’s brothers the next heirs to the throne.) The calendar was thus appropriate for Marie-Thérèse, and may have been printed for her. One nude scene was partially erased and bears traces of green and ink wash coloring, perhaps by Marie-Thérèse herself, who was reputed to be a religious “bigote.” Marie-Thérèse of Savoy (1756-1805), granddaughter of Charles Emmanuel III, Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia, was born and raised in the royal palace in Turin. At the age of 17, she was married to Charles-Philippe of France, Comte d’Artois, brother of Louis XVI, and future King Charles X, the last Bourbon king. She thus became sister-in-law to Marie-Antoinette, as well as to her own sister, Marie-Joséphine, who had married another royal brother, Louis-Stanislas, Count of Provence. In Versailles, these young members of the royal family at first formed a circle of friends, acting in plays and passing the time with other oblivious diversions of pre-Revolutionary royals, but their relations are said to have deteriorated after Louis XVI became King in 1774. Marie-Thérèse, who did not leave much of a mark on history, is described as plain, timid, lacking in curiosity and having no influence on her husband, who was as charming and libertine in his youth as he was to be reactionary in his maturity (DBI). She had a sad life. After the storming of the Bastille, she and her husband fled to Turin; in 1791 he deserted her to join Counter-Revolutionary forces in Germany, soon followed by their two sons. She never saw them again, and her last years were plagued by “episodes of paranoia.” I locate no other copies of this edition (with the above caveat concerning lack of bibliographical control), but a later issue, for 1778, evidently printed from the same plate, was owned by Savigny de Moncorps (Almanachs illustrés, no. 24). He described the scenes, in his own words, as: “Le jour de l’an, la Toilette d’une jolie femme, scène champêtre devant une marmite suspendue au dessus d’un grand feu, une cueillete de fruits, une suprise agréable, autre petite scène galante, la Balançoire, Sacrifice à l’Amour, Le Bain, Berger et Bergère gardant un troupeau (mais pensant à autre chose), Le Coin du feu, un Jeune seigneur surprenant une jolie femme étendue sur un sofa.” The date of 1775 appears only in the month of January, so it would have been easy to change in the plate. Olivier, Hermal, Roton, Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées 2551. Cf. Savigny de Moncorps, Almanachs illustrés du XVIIIe siècle (1909), no. 24, pp. 63-64.

Description
Paris: Jacques Collombat, 1739. 36mo (binding size 108 x 55 mm). [72] pp. (a single quire of 36 leaves, the first and last leaves mounted on the free endpapers and printed on visible sides only). Woodcut royal arms on title, 2 astronomical woodcuts, typographic moon symbols in calendar. Double rule page borders. Publisher’s case binding of olive morocco, covers gold-blocked with very wide rocaille border, Dutch-gilt free endleaves, pastedowns removed gilt edges (small loss to border of lower cover, inner backstrip archivally reinforced, some scuffing to lower cover).*** A nice example of one of the longest published Parisian almanacs, published without interruption from 1700 to 1792, and containing useful information for ladies and gentleman of the Court. Invented by the printer-publisher and typefounder Jean-Jacques Estienne Collombat (1668-1744), the Calendrier de la Cour became a familiar fixture of court life. These little books continued to be referred to as “Collombats” long after the printer’s death, when their publication was continued by the printer Hérissant and later his widow.  Printed in a very small but easily legible typeface designed by Collombat, the calendar with its ephemerides uses numerous typographic astrological symbols, which he only started using in 1730, when he was finally able to have small enough symbols designed and cast (as he stated in his 1731 issue, cf. Grand-Carteret). The remaining text contains information of interest to the Court: lists of officials and their various charges, births and deaths throughout the European royal families, prominent members of the clergy, etc. At the end are tables of practical information: a table of proper expenses for various annual incomes (from 10 to 100,000 livres), the age of the world, or a table of wine prices, by muid (an ancient unit of measure, used for liquids and grains).  These almanacs were used by virtually all courtiers and ladies at Court, and the bindings and cover materials reflected their owners’ ranks. The present pretty gold-blocked covers, of fine material but relatively simple to produce, and probably commissioned by the publishers, would have been considered appropriate for an official or lady of relatively low standing.  Cf. Grand-Carteret, Les Almanachs français, no. 92 and p. XLI.

The uncommon 1845 1st edition of this early examination of moral instruction in American education. 16mo, 164 pgs. of text plus a lengthy list of Harper & Brothers recent titles in theology and travel. Tight and VG in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the front panel. A degree of forgiveable spotting and soiling to the panels, offsetting at the pastedowns and endsheets. Written in pencil on the front pastedown in a former owner's (or bookseller's) hand is the following description: "an early plea & plan (an appendix) to adopt a national system of schools & education in the U.S. (especially Indiana + Ohio"). Includes letters from Henry Beecher and other leading theologians of the day, beseeching women to teach the country's young in principled, moral ways.

Description
San Francisco: Arion Press, 1995. Fine. Number 200 of 250 numbered copies, with 26 lettered copies hors de commerce. It is the forty-seventh publication of the Arion Press and rather scarce with no copies in commerce. The book shares characteristics with the sixth publication of the press, Moby-Dick, by the same author, of 1979, in that the same typeface is used, Goudy Modern ... it is printed on the same paper, which was made for that edition by hand to the specifications of the press at the Barcham Green Mill in England and bears watermarks of the mill, the press, and of a sperm whale; and the same artist, Barry Moser, has engraved a new portrait of Herman Melville on Resingrave for the frontispiece. The text type was composed and cast on the Monotype by Mackenzie & Harris. The display type is Goudy Open and was set by hand. The book was designed and produced by Andrew Hoyem and conceived in many ways as a companion to the 1979 Moby Dick, one of the most important press books of the twentieth century." [from the Prospectus]. This book was suggested to Hoyem by the renowned scholar of poetry, Helen Vendler. She regarded Melville as among the greatest American poets of the 19th century and was eager to make a selection that would show the variety of his best poetry. Despite the importance attached to his poems today by scholars and critics, seldom did readers have any appreciation for Melville the poet. Bound in bright blue cloth with darker blue dyed leather goatrskin bands left over from the earlier Moby Dick. The bands run across the top and bottom edges of the book with title and author in silver foil. Printed on octavo sized paper of 6.75 x 9 7/8 inches using Goudy Modern type in a smaller point size than the 1979 volume. Top page edges trimmed, while the fore-edge and bottom edges are untrimmed. The signatures were folded by hand and each copy was sewn by hand with linen thread over linen tapes. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase with blue goatskin title label to spine. Accompanied by the prospectus. In fine condition. Measures 7 x 10 inches. 156 numbered pages. PRI/110424.

Description
First Edition Thus; A Good to Very Good copy of this edition published by Silus Andrus of Hartford in 1827; This classic work of Christian allegory was first published in 1681, and is often cited as the first novel written in English. This book regarded as one of the most significant works of theological fiction, with a readership only surpassed by the Holy Bible. This copy is in good to very good condition with a square, intact, tight binding, beautiful etchings in relief to both boards, and crisp pages free from markings; the book shows moderate wear to the board edges, ends, and corners, age-spotting to the exterior text block and interior pages, spine lettering that has faded out, and a previous owners inscription to the 2nd free paper (appears to be from a husband to his wife, dated in the year of publication). Overall, a presentable and collectible copy of a work usually rebound; quite uncommon to find an early edition in it's original binding. Will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.

Photograph Album of the town of Albion, Orleans County, New York, dated circa 1890s-1910s
Seller
Michael Brown Rare Books, LLC (United States)
Description
Small quarto album, containing 114 black and white photographs, mainly silver prints, the album is bound in original half leather, marbled paper boards, the photographs are mounted onto sheets of paper in album; the paper stock of these leaves is of poor quality, all sheets are browned, and brittle, chipped at margins, and loose in album; several photos loose, not pasted to sheets; photos vary in size from 5" x 3 ¾" to 6" x 4" to 7 ½" x 4 ½"; images not dated, circa 1890s to 1910s. The images themselves are in good condition, clean and clear, however the album and the leaves the images are mounted on have condition issues. The album is not signed, nor labeled, but several clues within the album and images of the photos, appear to place the album as being a collection of images of buildings in the town of Albion, New York, in Orleans County. Several images are of buildings under construction – perhaps the album was compiled by a builder. The album contains a newspaper clipping of an Albion, New York newspaper dated 1911, however none of streetscapes show any automobiles, rather horse and buggy, or people on horses, thus the mages likely date from the late 19th Century, or first decade of the 20th Century. Some of the photographs of the churches in the album, when compared to the architecture of the historic churches of present day Albion, shows that they are indeed photos of Albion churches, in particular the First Presbyterian Church and the Christ Episcopal Church, thus confirming the images are buildings in Albion, Orleans County, New York. Albion is a village in Orleans County, New York. The village is centrally located in the county. The village is partly within the towns of both Albion and Gaines. Albion is the county seat of Orleans County and is about 30 miles (48 km) west/northwest of the City of Rochester. There are no written inscriptions identifying the photos, however some have images provide some information. One is the A.V. Clark tombstone, which may be a clue to the origins of the album. Another is a Cole tombstone, again possibly a clue to the ownership of the album. A couple of the photos have "Aristotype" or "Drop Shutter" written on the bottom margins, indications of the photographer detailing the method he took taking the photograph. An "Aristotype" is a high-symmetry structure type that can be viewed as an idealized version of a lower-symmetry structure. "Drop Shutter" is an early form of camera shutter consisting of a plate which when released falls vertically and carries an aperture in its center past the opening of the lens. One photo shows the "Andre Monument, Tarrytown, NY." Another image shows "Our Unknown Dead –May 30, 1890" – and has a photo of a monument. One image is a portrait of an older man with the inscription: "Dr. Marsh, Albany Medical School," written in pencil next to it. A couple of newspaper clippings, laid into the album, mention President Grant's death, which would place them in 1885, perhaps dating the album as early as 1885. The First Presbyterian Church of Albion at 29 East State St. was built in 1874 - with its 175-foot high spire was the tallest structure in Orleans County, New York. Photographs of it in the album show it to be complete, thus dating the photo album post 1875, and with the Grant obituary mentions in the newspaper clippings, puts it at about 1885, but the album also shows a church built in the 1890s, and a newspaper clipping of 1911, thus a good date for the album is likely 1890s-1910s and before the automobile, as only horses and horse and buggies are shown in the photos when streetscapes or properties are shown. The images consist mainly of architectural views such as houses, churches, cemetery monuments, small local bridges, buildings under construction, several interior views of homes, several landscape views showing gardens, fountains, and the grounds of properties, some animals, a couple of water scenes showing small boats and houses on the shore of a lake, or pond, and several photos of people (men and women, children), some on horses.

Description
Frankart, [c. 1924] Pair of bookends featuring a sailor boy with a dog. Very good, with some spotting, and one of the sailor boy figures slightly loose. Overall, a bright, charming pair of Art Deco bookends. Founded by sculptor Arthur von Frankenberg in 1924, Frankart was a NYC-based metal art company that specialized in functional Art Deco items. Named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts that took place in Paris in 1925, Art Deco was a design movement that flourished in the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by sleekness and geometric lines, and influenced by industrialism, Cubism, Bauhaus, and archaeological discoveries, including King Tut's tomb in 1922. During the height of the movement, Art Deco bookends were popular objects to collect, due to their beauty, affordability, and practicality. Notably, New York City is home to a few of the world's most famous examples of Art Deco architecture: the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center. This collection of Art Deco bookends features a wide and wonderful variety of designs and metal types. The sculpted works span historical figures like Roycroft arts-and-crafts community founder Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), modern dance pioneer and inventor of the "Serpentine Dance" Loie Fuller (1862-1928), and the legendary literary pair Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and his muse Beatrice Portinari (ca. 1265-1290). Other designs include lions, serpents, whales, seamen, puppies, and cherubs, among many others. The bookends were made by some of the most prominent American art metal companies of the first half of the 20th century, including PM Craftsman (est. 1911), Armor Bronze (est. 1910 as "National Metalizing Company"), Frankart (est. 1924), and Pompeian Bronze Company (est. 1889 as the "Galvano Bronze Company").. Very Good. 5.5" x 3.5" x 7".

Five documents, 1861 - 1862, three in manuscript, two printed and filled in manuscript; various sizes; generally in very good or better condition - two with small ncks and cuts to edges, one with a discreet repair to verso. The Civil War would be one of the first wars, in which large-scale railroad transportation was used to move and supply armies rapidly over long distances. Various documents and orders were used to record the movements, including military orders, written by commanders and then conveyed to railroad companies, freight and passenger receipts, in which railroad companies used their standard paperwork to record military transports, and so on. The current group of papers, signed by various army commanders and railroad officials, represented such records of transportation of soldiers, horses, servants, equipment, and baggage on the Hartford nad New Haven and the Springfield railroads.
