Pittsburgh: Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, 1810. FIRST EDITION. Full calf, spine label, new endpapers; interior with some discoloration and foxing due to paper stock. First edition. Cuming (1762–1828) was an Irish-born doctor, traveler, and author. In 1806, he purchased land in Ohio which prompted his exploratory trip down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers through Louisana and the Floridas. He wrote about his journey in Sketches of a tour providing an "excellent and extensive observations on pioneer conditions throughout the Ohio and lower Mississippi valleys" (Howes). Additionally, the appendix contains numerous narratives, published for the first time, describing the greater Americas from other notable explorers like George Loskeil, Gideon Forsyth, S.P. Hildreth and more. These include topographical descriptions, notes on diseases, and information about Native American art and culture.

Illustrated with 8 photographs and portraits, large folding map. Extensive notes, index. Bluish-green cloth, printed paper spine label. A very fine copy with the elusive pictorial dust jacket. Jacket with light rubbing, slight chipping to spine ends, small closed tear to rear bottom edge. Very scarce, especially with the book in this condition and with the often lacking dust jacket. Marcy's account of his 1852 exploration of the territory extending from what is now central Oklahoma to New Mexico, first published in 1853. Editor Grant Foreman provides a 20 page scholarly and informative introduction. .

Large folding tinted lithographed map, 2 lithographed plates, 1 wood-engraved plate, and several text illustrations (including a full-page plan). Publisher's blue patterned cloth stamped in black and gold. Spine ends and 3 corners show wear, lower corners jammed, short one-inch tear to bottom edge of title page, bookplate. Contemporary owner's name on endpaper. Overall, a very good copy, internally fine and complete. Canadian mining at its best. Includes a history and description of Port Arthur and the Thunder Bay region (SW Ontario, Canada) from 1800, Fort William (from 1880), and the geology and mining in the Thunder Bay area. A business directory of Port Arthur occupies pp. [191]-217. The large folding frontispiece map shows the mineral district, north shore of Lake Superior. The folding map is often wanting from this work and some copies may have been issued without it. The two lithographed plates are titled Sketch of Beaver Mountain Silver Mining Location. Near Port Arthur. Looking West From Magazine at Foot of Hill and Reduction Works On Silver Creek. Beaver Mine. Looking North.
