Brest: Edouard Anner, 1845. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. With half-title and 1 engraved plate. Stiff blue marbled wrappers, with some light wear to spine. From the library of Jerry Stannard, with his book-label. First and only edition of this prize-winning essay, written in response to a contest put together by the Société Véterinare de Finistère, for the improvement and creation of grasslands. Vincent, a civil engineer and mayor of the small village of Landévennec, France, gives excellent suggestions for the use of the region's swamps and marshes, proposing their drainage and conversion into grasslands. He details a step-by-step process, from drainage of the swamps, to irrigation of the new grasslands, to suggestion of what types of grass to grow, proposing hay and other grains which can be used to feed livestock. He not only explains the methods and machinery to be used for the drainage, he also goes into the varying techniques of irrigation, as well as the different types of water that can or cannot be used.

Description
New York: Max Ember, 1970. Very Good. New York: Max Ember, [ca. 1970s]. Quarto (29.5cm); post-bound mottled gray card wrappers; [1],68,50,26ll. printed mimeograph on rectos only. Light wear and toning to wrapper margins, chiefly at spine foot, front wrapper separating from metal binding clasp and first leaf slightly askew, uneven toning to textblock; overall Very Good and sound. Stage script for an adaptation of Joan Didion's 1970 novel, which had already been adapted into film in 1972. This adaptation for the stage was presumably written later in the 1970s, when Ember's career started to take off after writing the Broadway adaptation of It's a Wonderful Life in 1976 and directing a revival of Death of a Salesman in 1977. While we haven't found contemporary press, Ember shared with us that the production -- featuring a white box set, heavy use of projectors, costumes all in white for easy projection, etc. -- was staged in Manhattan. No copies in the trade or OCLC as of September, 2025.

1855. Does Slavery Christianize the Negro? Higginson, Thomas Wenthworth. American Anti-Slavery Society. Anti-Slavery Tracts No. 4, circa 1855.New York: American Anti-Slavery Society. Anti-Slavery Tracts No. 4, circa 1855. in original wrappers, 8 pages. 4.75" x 7.5" inches. Higginson was a Unitarian minister and dedicated abolitionist. The text in this tract was originally delivered as a sermon in Worcester, Massachusetts in June, 1854. Supported by repots from Southern ministers, Higginson argues in this Antislavery pamphlet, that despite slaveowners' claims of benevolence and the alleged civilizing, moral influence of slavery upon the enslaved, slaves in the US in fact receive no sound religious instruction from their masters and exist in a state of "moral degradation" and are "the heathen of this Christian country." Spot of foxing on front cover, light handling wear but very good condition overall.

Description
New York: HarperCollins, 2010 First edition, first printing. Signed by Smith on title page. Publisher's purple cloth, with Smith and Mapplethorpe's initials in blind to front board, spine lettered in silver foil, and black endpapers; in its original purple pictorial dust jacket designed by Allison Saltzman, with a 1969 photo of Smith and Mapplethorpe to front panel, lettered in gray. Touch of wear to head of spine, else fine book; near fine unclipped dust jacket, with a few faint creases to head of spine and top edge of jacket, and light toning to top and bottom edges of front and rear flaps. Overall, an excellent signed copy of Smith's universally acclaimed memoir. Just Kids documents the relationship between singer-songwriter Patti Smith and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who together played a major role in shaping the underground art and punk rock movements in New York City in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to being Smith's roommate and lover, Mapplethorpe photographed her and those iconic images later became the covers to her music albums. The memoir chronicles their childhoods, first encounters in New York, romantic relationship, tenure at the Chelsea Hotel, and their artistic endeavors that stemmed from their mutual inspiration. According to Janet Maslin's New York Times review, the title Just Kids refers to a moment in Washington Square Park in 1967 when a couple saw Smith and Mapplethorpe. While the woman thought that they "looked like artists," her husband brushed the comment off, saying that they were "just kids.". Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
San Francisco: Organized Labor Print, 1901. Softcover. First edition thus; 3 3/4 x 5 1/2; pp. [3], 4, [1], 6-30, [1]; textured brown wraps; back corners a bit brittle; few small nicks to spine; faint foxing to first and last pages only, else clean; very good or better. An apparently unrecorded (not in OCLC, not in the trade) constitution of one of the most powerful central bodies of its kind in the country. Patrick Henry McCarthy (known as "Pinhead" McCarthy and Mayor of San Francisco from 1910 to 1912) helped organize the Building Trades' Council in 1896 and became its President in 1898. It had begun with the joining of seven unions - carpenters, painters, decorators, etc. and by 1901 the Council had grown to thirty-six component unions with over 15,000 members. Right by McCarthy's side and an integral part of shaping the Council was Olaf Anders Tveitmoe (who was on the Committee on Revision of the current book), a Norwegian-American, who had moved to San Francisco in 1898 and in a short period of time had risen to a high position in the labor movement. Tveitmoe was also the editor of 'Organized Labor' - an eight-page, five-column weekly which came out on Saturdays. His commitment was evident in his first issue editorial in which he promised "a newspaper of which no Union member would be ashamed. The paper would at all times advance the interests of labor and seek to harmonize differences between existing unions. He declared that the cause of labor went far beyond shorter hours and increased wages; it included educated children, happy homes, prosperous communities, good government, and the development of a higher esteem for the working class."
