Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1956. First edition of Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Octavo, original half cloth, with eight pages of black-and-white photogravures. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To J. Edgar Hoover- a public servant of the highest courage- with the admiration of the author- John Kennedy." The recipient, J. Edgar Hoover served as the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States for nearly 48 years, being first appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation – the FBI's predecessor – in 1924 and was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director for another 37 years until his death in 1972. Hoover's controversial anti-communist agenda as FBI director led him to be an ally of JFK's father, Joe Kennedy, who was a successful businessman, an ideal capitalist, and a self-proclaimed enemy of communism. While JFK was also anti-communist, both he and his brother Robert clashed with Hoover over any number of issues, such as Civil Rights and organized crime, and Hoover supported Nixon during the Presidential campaign against JFK. A television docuseries was even made in the 80's titled Hoover vs. The Kennedys: The Second Civil War, which follows the Hoover reign through an eight-year period, from JFK's nomination to the Democratic ticket in 1960, through the Johnson years and the tragic assassinations that would mark the end of an era. Given that their relationship was notoriously tumultuous in later years, this positive inscription full of admiration, which was written soon after the book's release in 1956, is all the more interesting. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Phil Grushkin. Foreword by Allan Nevins. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. One of the finest association copies extant between these two looming figures of twentieth century American politics, with Hoover serving for nearly half a century and Kennedy inspiring future generations to serve. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

Description
Although missing the year, Rivera's typed letter to Mr. Reginald Poland, Director of The Fine Arts Gallery, San Diego (1925-1950),small folio, dated March 27, from San Francisco, was penned in 1931. Rivera arrived in San Francisco with Frida Kahlo several months earlier in November of 1930 and went to live with Ralph Stackpole, the American sculptor, painter and muralist at 716 Montgomery Street, a locale that acted as a social center for the artistic community in San Francisco. Rivera and Kahlo lived at that address with Stackpole until they left San Francisco in June, several months after Rivera wrote to Poland. Rivera discusses future exhibitions and current work with the possibility of an exhibition in San Diego. "Thank you for your interest... I took the matter up with Mr. Rollins of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and tried to arrange for an exhibition in San Diego. But it was impossible because almost the entire exhibit was loaned...." Rivera then explains that he is sending "aquarelles and drawings" to the Detroit Institute of Fine Art and that he is returning to Mexico to "complete my work in the National Palace in Mexico City" and hopes to arrange for an exhibition in San Diego "in the Fall." Rivera returned to the US to begin work on his acclaimed murals in the Detroit Institute of the Arts, but it was not until 1936, that he finally exhibited in San Diego at the California-Pacific International Exposition.

Paris: I’Imprimerie de Migneret, 1808. FIRST EDITION OF CORVISART’S TRANSLATION FROM THE LATIN. Complete with half-title and errata. Uncut in the original wrappers, re-backed with the original spine label. An absolutely fantastic copy, preserved in a slipcase. First edition of Corvisart's classic translation of one of the great medical masterpieces. The results of Auenbrugger's experiments, with the immediate percussion of the chest as a new diagnostic method, were first published in Vienna in 1761. For nearly fifty years this revolutionary technique attracted little attention, until Corvisart (1755-1821), Napoleon's personal physician, published his translation of the original text. It was through Corvisart's reputation and advocacy that the value of thoracic percussion was universally recognized. Auenbrugger (1722-1809) was a physician at the Spanish Hospital in Vienna. Garrison & Morton, 2672.

Description
Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press, 1968. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Very good/near fine. First edition of The Strength of Government by National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy, inscribed to his landlord.. Octavo, xii, [2], 113pp. White cloth, title stamped in black and red on spine. A first edition, first printing, with no additional printings on the copyright page. Foxing along outer edge of text block, soiling to white cloth, generally clean text block. In the publisher's near fine dust jacket, price-clipped, bright illustrations. Inscribed on the half title: "For Henry & Janet Redmond, Who may not agree with all this, so that they have my apologies in advance for their guilt-by-association in having had the past acknowledged on page x. Mac Bundy. November 20, 1968." In The Strength of Government, former National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy argues that the national government is dangerously weak for the job assigned to it by the American people. He believes the rapid changes in communication and technology place an increased burden on the federal government that it is not equipped to handle. In the view of Bundy, the Executive Branch is dangerously weak, with certain departments being held together by "an administrator of truly exceptional force and skill." McGeorge Bundy served as the National Security Advisor for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson from 1961-1966. Later in life, he joined Robert McNamara as a member of the "Gang of Four," advising the Executive Branch on nuclear policy. Bundy died in 1996.

A small collection of the newsletter *Transit Topics* produced by the Virginia Transit Company of Richmond, Virginia in the 1950s collected by an employee of the company. The Virginia Transit Company was the transit division for Norfolk and Richmond between 1944 and 1973 when it was split into two separate companies for each city. The company originally operated streetcars but by the end of the 1940s was making a switch to motor buses. These newsletters feature a header which reads, "Transit Topics Go By Bus Leave Worries Behind." Some headlines include, "Suggestion for a Pleasant Visit...Why Not Go by Bus?"; "232 Virginia Transit Bus Operators Here Are Honored This Week for Accident-Free Driving Records"; and "Save and Save and Save!!!" The newsletters boast the benefits of public transportation including savings, rides to church, and flexibility. They also let customers know about new schedules, fares, and rerouting. An interesting archive following 1950s public transportation in Virginia.
