Description
Macau: Typ. de J Da Silva, 1874. First (only) Edition.. Original printed publisher's wrappers.. Very good; some modest spotting and scribbling on the front wrapper; one small wear spot on the front wrapper.. 8vo, [4], [5] - 42, [2 - blank] pp. Hematuria is a symptom of a diseased condition; it is blood in the urine. General acute fevers in tropical climates that were accompanied by this symptom (usually the result of an untreated infection by the plasmodium malaria parasite engorging the kidneys and producing a hemorrhage) were relegated to the general category of "intermittant fevers" or "swamp fevers" (here palustres). Prior to 1880, the date when Laveran first announced the discovery of the malaria parasite in Paris (publishing the result in 1881), no cause for the condition was known. Exiled to the wilderness of East Timor, Magalhães undertook a series of case studies (at the military hospital in Dili, the capital of East Timor, from 1869-1873) in an attempt to elucidate the cause(s) of what he identified as an "ailment" and to suggest remedies (it was, in a way, a similar action to that of Anton Chekov, who, two decades later in Siberia, on the island of Sakhalin, would carry out his studies of tuberculosis). Ameliorative at best, his work was careful and indicative of the general ignorance and limits of such a specialized field within tropical medicine of the day - there are citations to Rayer's notable atlas and work on the kidney and to Piorry. Malaria was no secret or rare ailment. Quinine was the generally available palliative - but no cure. One of the rare attempts at serious research in tropical medicine, in situ, prior to WWI. There is but one copy of the pamphlet located (Amsterdam).

Description
New York: The Dial Press, 1968. Very good.. Uncorrected galleys of the first edition of Baldwin's "criminally underrated" (Weekes) novel about the life of a Black actor. TELL ME is the story of Black actor Leo Proudhammer, his brilliant career shadowed by the condescension, alienation, and physical threats visited on him by a white America that will tolerate him only so far as he entertains, and which exacts heavy penalties for his efforts to live as a free man and artist. The book draws heavily on his own experiences with the Actors Studio during the production of BLUES FOR MISTER CHARLIE, and hides none of its author's bitterness and pain. "TELL ME HOW LONG THE TRAIN'S BEEN GONE is a masterpiece by one of the best living writers in America. Which is not to say, naturally, that it will comfort or cheer you much" (Thompson). 10.5'' x 9.75''. Original plastic comb-bound paper wrappers. Irregular galley pagination, [2], 1-173. Ink notation to front wrapper. Toning to wrappers and leaf margins, some soil, shadow of former paperclip to front wrapper and title page. Comb intact.

Description
Boston: William D. Ticknor and Company, 1848. FIRST EDITION. With the 8-page publisher's brochure laid into the front of the book containing excellent reviews. Original green-stamped cloth. A fine, crisp copy with a presentation inscription from the author on the fly-leaf. First edition of an American classic on the earliest use of anaesthesia in obstetrics. Channing was one of the first to use ether anesthesia in maternity cases. The present work was founded on nearly 600 cases in his own practice, and was considered daring to publish at that time. Channing (1786-1876), the first professor of midwifery at Harvard, was one of America's most eminent obstetric teachers. He adopted the use of ether in childbirth after the news of Simpson and Dubois had crossed the Atlantic a year earlier. This work is of vast importance because it contained a critical study and analysis of many cases in his own practice. Therefore, through his influence, the use of ether in childbirth was successfully used in this country.

Description
xvi, 364 pp.; 2 p.l., 397 pp. Two vols. 8vo (220 x 140 mm.), 19th-century polished calf (joints a trifle rubbed), spines gilt, red & green morocco lettering-pieces on spines. London: R. Ackermann, 1824. First edition of an essential firsthand history of the mass British acquisitions of Old Masters in the first decades of the 19th century. “William Buchanan (1777-1864), a Scottish lawyer turned art dealer, was to benefit most from the turmoil caused by the Napoleonic Wars, although he started too late to participate in the Orléans sales. He employed mainly James Irvine of Drum, Aberdeenshire, in Italy and George Augustus Wallis in Spain and Portugal as agents to scour the cities for available works of art and ship them back to London…”–J. Stourton and C. Sebag-Montefiore, The British as Art Collectors, p. 159. Buchanan structures this work around the celebrated collections to which he added or from which he extracted magnificent works. He describes the collections of Michael Bryan, de Calonne, Fagel, Robit, Vitturi, Lebrun, Sebastiani, Lucien Bonaparte, and Talletrand. He cites prices and provides numerous insights into the dispersal of many of the early great 19th-century art collections. The sections beginning “Mr. Buchanan’s Importations…” (Vol. II, pp. 95-180; 203-50; 294-304; 349-77), are perhaps of the greatest interest, due to the author’s candor and to the excerpts of private (and revealing) correspondence between Buchanan and his foreign agents regarding the pursuit of great works. Nice set, internally fine. Presentation inscription on front fly-leaf: “James McDouall from his sincere friend Charles F. Rushout, on his leaving Eton, Election 1857.” Engraved armorial bookplate of “Jacobi McDouall de Logon” on front paste-down. ❧ Oxford Art online (Buchanan). “His book is by far the frankest ever written by any dealer anywhere, and by printing many of the original documents and letters that passed between him and his agents Buchanan conveys much of the profitable excitement of the pursuit — bliss indeed was it to be a collector in that dawn, but to be a dealer was very heaven.”–Francis Haskell, Rediscoveries in Art: Some Aspects of Taste, Fashion & Collecting in England & France (1976), p. 27.

Description
[Milwaukee, Wi, 1985. Very good.. 45 rpm record in printed sleeve. Minor edge wear. A rare music single, with instrumental B-side, issued by the Miller Brewing Company in celebration of Black History Month in 1985. The front side prints the title and first verse of the lyrics of the song; the verso explains the motivation behind the record's release: "'Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing' was written by the noted Black poet and civil rights leader, James Weldon Johnson and was set to music by his brother, Jay R. Johnson, actor-musician. Originally intended for use in a program given by a group of Jacksonville, Florida schoolchildren to celebrate Lincoln's birthday, its words convey a sense of birthright and heritage. Often referred to as the 'Black National Anthem,' it is sung at various public gatherings." The artists who recorded the present version of the song are a veritable Hall of Fame of soul and rhythm-and-blues music in the latter 20th century: Al Green, Deniece Williams, Patti Austin, Roberta Flack, Melba Moore, and Deborah McDuffie, who also produced the song at the Mingo-Jones advertising agency.
