Description
1929. [African American Education] [Women's Education] Howard University graduates, 1929, photo archive documenting African American higher education at one of the central institutions established to provide educate for African Americans after the Civil War, during a period when access to advanced schooling remained sharply restricted by segregation, unequal funding, and exclusion from most white universities. By 1929, Howard had developed into a national center for training Black teachers, professionals, and civic leaders, drawing students from across the United States into an academic environment structured through coursework, student governance, and Greek-letter organizations. The images center identifiable individuals including Theodus R. Conner of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Nettie M. Nelson of Hampton, Virginia, whose inscriptions connect them to Liberal Arts and Education and to Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha. These photographs document approximately the third generation of students to attend Howard since its founding in 1867, capturing a cohort formed within an established Black institutional system that produced a professional class despite continuing legal and economic barriers to education. Fifteen silver gelatin photographs, each approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches, depict graduates in cap and gown posed individually and in small groups across campus grounds, with period automobiles, walkways, and landscaped areas visible. Several prints bear handwritten inscriptions identifying subjects and affiliations. The photographs were removed from an album, with paper remnants and adhesive residue on the versos indicating their original placement within a personal or commemorative collection. Multiple images of Conner appear alongside additional scenes of students in procession, paired portraits, and informal campus moments, extending the archive beyond formal commencement imagery into everyday student life and peer relationships within a Black university setting. Graduating in 1929 places this group at the onset of the Great Depression, when Black employment opportunities contracted sharply and segregated educational systems remained chronically underfunded due to state and local policy. Black colleges such as Howard functioned within these constraints while serving as essential training grounds for teachers and professionals operating within restricted labor markets. Nettie M. Nelson's training in education situates her within the system sustaining segregated Black schooling, while Conner's involvement in student leadership and fraternity life points to networks that extended into civic and professional spheres. Minor edge wear, light surface wear, and album-removal residue on versos; overall in very good condition. The archive documents the institutional formation of a Black educated class at a moment when access to education was contested, making it a direct visual record of how Black higher education functioned under segregation.

Description
1799. Trumbull, Jonathan, Jr. military commission for Abel Rossetter, dated October 12, 1799, documents Connecticut's post-Revolution militia system through a gubernatorial appointment issued during Trumbull's tenure as governor. The document supports research into early federal military preparedness, state command structures, and the continuing role of the militia in the generation after independence. Signed by Jonathan Trumbull Jr., who had served as George Washington's aide-de-camp during the Revolution and became governor of Connecticut in 1797, the commission shows how state military authority operated in practice through formal gubernatorial authorization of local officers. Trumbull, Jonathan, Jr. Military commission for Abel Rossetter. New Haven, October 12, 1799. Partially printed document signed. 1 page. Folio. The document appoints "Abel Rossetter... Lieutenant of the fifth Company in the 27th Regiment of Militia," placing the item within Connecticut's structured system of regimental and company-level organization. Its printed form with manuscript insertions and gubernatorial signature preserves the bureaucratic process by which state executives confirmed rank and delegated military authority to local officers. Rather than merely naming an individual, the commission records the mechanisms of militia administration in the early republic through its formulaic language, rank designation, place of issue, and executive authentication. Issued in 1799, the commission belongs to the period of military reorganization and vigilance that followed the Revolution and accompanied the unsettled international climate of the late 1790s, when state militias remained central to internal defense and public order. The document therefore carries value not only as a Trumbull signature piece but as evidence of how Connecticut maintained military readiness through local regimental appointments under state supervision. Mild wear consistent with handling; overall very good condition. A strong early republic militia document linking gubernatorial authority, local command, and the administrative afterlife of Revolutionary military culture.

Description
Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1799. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary sheep, rebacked; paper toned as usual, but overall a very good copy from the library of John B. Purdie, M.D. of Smithfield, Virginia, plus another physician from Richmond, Virginia whose signature is illegible. First edition. This is Rush’s account of the particularly virulent epidemic of yellow fever that brought life and commerce to a halt in Philadelphia during 1797. His focus is on the relationship between bile and disease. His understanding of the importance of bile in bodily functions helped him to lay the foundation for treatment of hepatitis and liver disorders. Rush also understood the significance of environmental factors in disease. Notwithstanding, he approached the treatment of yellow fever with bleeding and purging. This created disputes with many physicians, who had abandoned bloodletting for more scientific methods, including William Cobbett and William Currie, who accused Rush of killing more people than he saved. A rare title; it appears that no copies have been auctioned since 1979. Austin 1675.

Description
Cambridge Printed for the Author, [1813]. In her Student's Guide to Western Calligraphy, Joyce Irene Whalley, formerly of the V&A, Library calls the title of this work "very seductive." She goes on about Jenkins, "He based his system on the theory that the round-hand could be divided into six basic strokes of the pen and that having mastered these, anyone could write a good hand. Unfortunately he found that certain letters such as k and s did not fit into his scheme, while z was omitted as unnecessary." Ms. Whalley's book reproduces the very attractive Jenkins title-page as a full-page illustration. Facing the title-page is a portrait of the author, and the book is filled with engraved examples of letter formation as well as wood engraved illustrations within the text. Jenkins cites a page of endorsements for his methods at the beginning, including one from John Adams, Late President of the United States. A nice copy with not too much of the typical browning. Whalley p. 112. THE FIRST WORK OF ITS KIND PUBLISHED IN AMERICA

Description
Mexico City, 1841. Good plus.. 389,[4]pp., plus folding map and ninety-six plates. Half title. Quarter sheep and mottled paper boards, spine gilt. Moderate spine wear; boards scuffed and front; paper detaching from front board; hinges cracked but solid. Light tanning and scattered foxing. An unusual Mexican edition of the Univers Pittoresque, an attempted world history and encyclopedia first published in Paris in 1837. This "Segunda Parte" of the Universo Pintoresco gives a history and description of the United States that includes politics, geography, natural history, and much more. At the rear are a folding map and nearly 100 plates that depict Native Americans, American revolutionary figures and important events, plants and animals, views and points of geographic significance, and maps. The plates are captioned in French and Spanish, and were apparently sent from France for publication in Mexico -- an interesting bit of publishing history. The text itself seems to be the only part of the whole work that was meaningfully distributed anywhere. OCLC locates copies of volumes one and three only at the national libraries of Spain and Israel; we locate a half dozen copies of the present volume.
