Description
New Rochelle: Francis Wilson, 1891. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 70 COPIES (from a total edition of 100) printed on handmade paper and signed by the publisher on limitation page. This copy unnumbered. 228 x 160 mm. (9 x 6 3/8"). 149, [3] pp. LOVELY GREEN MOROCCO, GILT, BY THE CLUB BINDERY (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in), covers elaborately decorated with gilt-rolled border, scrolling vines, and many floral tools surrounding a central purple morocco onlaid oval with the image of a jester stamped in gilt, raised bands, compartments densely gilt, gilt lettering, turn-ins with gilt scrolling pattern, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With original upper cover and backstrip bound in at rear. Housed in a (somewhat worn) suede-lined marbled slipcase with morocco lip. With engraved title page printed in red and black, and each poem illustrated with a headpiece and a decorative initial in red and black. With publisher's ex-libris tipped onto an inserted blank; flyleaf inscribed by the publisher to John Caldwell and dated 7 February 1895; WITH AN ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT POEM WRITTEN AND SIGNED BY EUGENE FIELD dated 21 October 1895 bound in at front; colophon signed John Wilson & Son. Spine slightly and evenly darkened, the usual offsetting from leather turn-ins onto endpapers, a negligible imperfection or two elsewhere, but IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the gorgeous binding unworn and with especially lustrous covers. This special copy of Eugene Field's classically inspired poetry--finely bound and enhanced with autograph material--would have undoubtedly delighted Field himself, who, as the Poetry Foundation notes, "treasured beautiful books and had a library lined with rare and unusual volumes." Although Field (1850-95) is perhaps best known for his humorous newspaper columns and children's poetry, the present work, co-written with his brother Roswell, contains modern interpretations of the first century Roman poet Horace. This first edition was printed in a very small run by Francis Wilson (better known as the first president of the Actor's Equity Association), and the present example--a presentation copy from Wilson to Board Chairman of the Carnegie Art Galleries and Grolier Club member John Caldwell--was augmented in several special ways: it contains an original autograph poem by Field (a feature called for only in the 30 copies on Japanese vellum), the publisher’s bookplate (bearing the image of a jester reading a book), and a beautiful bespoke binding (incorporating the same jester image into the cover design) by the Club Bindery. In 1895, Grolier members, along with Edwin Holden and other wealthy collectors, established the Club Bindery in order to attract European craftsmen to provide, close to home, fine quality binding work rivalling what was available abroad. The bindery was in operation until 1909, with Robert Hoe being its most influential manager and client. It provided bindings that tended to be traditional in style--though frequently with elaborate decoration--and that lived up to its patrons' expectations in terms of excellence. The first members of the staff of the Club Bindery were the Englishmen R. W. Smith and Frank Mansell, who were subsequently joined by several French binders, chief among them being Leon Maillard, who had worked previously for Cuzin, Gruel, and Marius Michel. Although there are no other bookplates in the present work (besides that of the publisher, as noted), we know that this volume was later in the collection of another Grolier club member, David Allen Fraser (1911-2003). A history of esteemed custodianship explains why this volume remains in outstanding condition..

1948. First Edition. Signed. WAUGH, Evelyn. The Loved One. An Anglo-American Tragedy. (London): Chapman & Hall, [1948]. Octavo, original green cloth, top edge gilt, uncut, original printed glassine. $2800.Signed limited large-paper first book edition, presentation copy, number 74 of only 250 copies signed by Evelyn Waugh and illustrator Stuart Boyle, additionally inscribed by Waugh on the limitation page: ""Mr. M. Man's copy."" In the rare and fragile original printed glassine wrapper.""In 1947 Waugh visited Hollywood to discuss the proposed film of Brideshead Revisited. No film was ever made because he refused to alter the story as the producers wished, largely that they might satisfy the standards set by the very powerful Catholic Legion of Decency. But the visit was not barren. With time on his hands he became fascinated with Californian burial practices, and the result was The Loved One (1948) which, for all its macabre setting, was a highly successful light novel based on Forest Lawn"" (DNB). Waugh wrote in his diary: ""I found a deep mine of literary gold in the cemetery of Forest Lawn and the work of the morticians and intend to get to work immediately on a novelette staged there."" He did extensive research for the novel, which included touring Forest Lawn and reading and annotating Embalming Techniques, a book by Forest Lawn founder, Dr. Hubert Eaton. The Loved One was critically acclaimed in Great Britain, as well as in the States, though The New Yorker refused to publish it when approached, claiming the themes had already been handled by other authors including Sinclair Lewis and Nathaniel West. The Loved One was adapted for the screen in 1965 by British filmmaker Tony Richardson and the screenplay was written by American satirical novelist Terry Southern and British author Christopher Isherwood. This is the first book edition; the work was first published in its entirety by Cyril Connolly in the February 1948 issue of the periodical Horizon. Book nearly fine with usual mild toning to spine, fragile glassine with chipping around spine head, some closed tears. An excellent copy, very scarce in the glassine.

First Thus. 746 pp., letterpress on commercial stock in black cloth-covered boards. No dusk jacket. 8vo. Very good. Only minor shelf wear, one small abrasion to cloth at head of spine. Binding just beginning to loosen towards middle of text block, but holding. [2347] A nice, relatively early edition of Du Bois's magnum opus. This copy is from an uncommon edition, reprinted by the Philadelphia-based publisher Albert Saifer by arrangement with Harcourt, Brace & Co., who held the rights from the book's first publication in 1935 until 1960; with no date given other than the 1935 Harcourt publication, the present edition would have been issued sometime between those two dates.

Description
Rochester, NY: Printed for Thomas H. Massey, 1951. Very good. 9” x 6”. Flexible card wrappers; internally stapled. Pp. [3], 60, [1]. Very good: several ink scribbles to verso of last leaf and a subtle few to two other spots; former owner's name inked to title page; a bit of soiling to one (blank) page; lightly toned. Inscribed by the author on title page. This is a rare and creative work showcasing Black perspectives on race and racism in everyday life. It was written by an African American, Thomas H. Massey. All we were able to learn about Massey came from the introduction to this book, written by Marian Perry Yankauer. Yankauer was identified as a lawyer, former Assistant Special Counsel to the NAACP and Executive Secretary of the group's Rochester branch. She shared that Massey “was born in the 'separate but equal' environment of North Carolina” and educated at Morehouse College in Atlanta and “the University of Rochester's graduate school.” A “onetime Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sprint champion” and disabled veteran of World War II, the author had “lived and worked among bean pickers, tobacco farmhands, domestic service workers, white collar workers and intellectuals.” Yankauer's text also explained the book's goal, to provide “entertainment, as well as an excellent introduction for a course in race relations . . . Massey confronts the reader with a seemingly casual treatment, by humor and allusion . . . a chance to listen in on carefully chosen conversations in a ghetto . . . These are facts, done up most attractively, and easily digested, but they are as authentic as any social study studded with statistics.” The conversations shared in this book cover a myriad of topics relevant to African Americans at the time, not limited to “a new era for Negroes in Georgia” who were first hired into “white collar” jobs for the United States government in Atlanta. The book's Black characters discussed treatment by white co-workers, bus drivers, shopkeepers and strangers, as well as the African American military experience. The talks concerned racial stereotypes, education, religion and politics, with one conversation ribbing the appearance of Black celebrities in Congress: “Bobby: 'Well, the way I see it: Robeson was a great All-American in football and he is a top-flight vocal artist; Jackie is a great all-around athletic ace, but these facts don't make them authorities on the attitudes of some 15,000,000 people.' Larry: 'Ya got something there, dude. I never heard of that committee calling in Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth or Red Grange or Jim Thorpe to spiel on politics or patriotism.'” The book also held a list of “The Big Ten” books that the author sourced or recommended, including Unpopular Essays by Bertrand Russell and Liberty Today by C.E.M. Joad. This copy was inscribed by Massey, “To Wendell M. Wilson with best wishes.” A rare and personalized expressive foray into race relations by an African American author. OCLC shows five holdings.

A handsome quartet of cabinet card photographs of San Antonio's San Juan Capistrano mission, with each photograph identified by a manuscript caption on either the front or back of the card mount. The captions of the four images read as follows: 1). "San Juan Mission: Showing the cloisters. Built 1718 A.D. [actually, 1716], near San Antonio, Texas, by the Indians under the directions of the Franciscan Monks. View taken Jan. 20th, 1900." 2). "San Juan Mission: Built 1718 A.D., near San Antonio, Texas, by the Indians under the direction of the Franciscan Monks. View taken Jan. 20th, 1900." 3). "Door and Window: San Juan Mission. 1718. San Antonio, Texas." 4). "San Juan Mission" Arch of Chapel, Built 1718 A.D. San Antonio, Texas." "The history of Mission San Juan Capistrano is similar to that of two other nearby missions in that it was relocated to the San Antonio area from East Texas in 1731. Its purpose was also similar to that of the other missions, namely to convert Native American groups to Christianity, assimilate them into Spanish society, and promote settlement in the region. In addition to its early history, the mission compound itself was constructed in a form typical of other San Antonio-area missions, including a church and plaza surrounded by a defensive wall formed from stone Indian quarters. The compound included other ancillary structures such as a granary, convent, workshops, and other storage facilities" - sanantonio.gov/MissionTrails website.

Description
Winsted, Conn: Citizen Job Print, 1895. Folio broadside, approx. 13" x 7¼", wood-engraved portrait of the lecturer; very good. His talk is "replete with touching incidents and adventure, and will linger long in the memory of those who were so fortunate to listen to this tender and eloquent story. He closed with a thrilling recital of an incident of Little Round Top, and as he produced the little artillery flag taken from the hands of a dead hero who carried it - a common soldier - the pent-up feelings of his auditors found vent in applause long continued and intense." Shamelessly taken from Wikipedia: "Little Round Top is the smaller of two rocky hills south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania-the companion to the adjacent, taller hill named Big Round Top. It was the site of an unsuccessful assault by Confederate troops against the Union left flank on July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Considered by some historians to be the key point in the Union Army's defensive line that day, Little Round Top was defended successfully by the brigade of Col. Strong Vincent. The 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, commanded by Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, fought the most famous engagement there, culminating in a dramatic downhill bayonet charge that is one of the most well-known actions at Gettysburg and in the American Civil War." London: Michael Joseph, 1943. Very Good/Very Good. London: Michael Joseph, 1943. First Edition. Octavo (19.8cm); illustrated dust jacket with 10/6 net price intact; boards in publisher's red cloth with silver lettering; 452pp. Jacket shows a clean tear along top front joint, with lighter tears and chips at folds and fairly heavy foxing, likely common given the war economy stock. Boards bumped at corners and spine ends, with another bump at fore-edge and a brief impression at top front. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. A contemporary New York Times review notes the scope of the novel: "'Marion Alive' covers two World Wars, the decay of Vienna's bourgeoisie, and the ominous period of inflation, unemployment and poverty during Germany's democratic intermezzo; Nazi brutality and Nazi stupidity after 1933, Communism in Russia, prohibition in New York and mental corruption in Heidelberg. In short, the whole hectic drama of our century has been crammed into 'Marion Alive,' beginning with Marion's childhood in a decadent Viennese home, and ending, politically speaking, with the fall of France.

Description
London: Michael Joseph, 1965. First printing. Very good plus in very good plus jacket.. First UK edition of Baldwin's second play, dedicated to the memory of Medgar Evers and partially based on the 1955 murder of Emmett Till. The play's inspiration was partially suggested to him as a theatrical subject by Elia Kazan, and Kazan took credit for it early and often ("I gave him the idea for that play-'Do a play on the Till case'"). In consequence of Baldwin's refusal to give over his play to Kazan's direction (under an all-white board of Lincoln Center), or to revise his play to be more sympathetic to lynching supporters, some critics complained about the "flagrantly anti-white" characterization (Frank Corsaro) and use of the word "motherfucker" (Cheryl Crawford). Many reviews seethed, typified by Robert Brustein, who in THE NEW REPUBLIC wrote against the "uncontrolled, hysterical, self-indulgent" nature of Baldwin's "ugly rage," calling the play an "inflammatory broadside of race hatred" that committed the (still) unforgivable sin of making white audiences feel "guilt." The backlash was such that Amiri Baraka later declared, "After this play Jimmy was demoted to the margins of US literature by the living dead." 7.25'' x 4.75''. Original black paper boards, gilt-lettered spine. In original price-clipped color photographic dust jacket with photo by Michael Rennie. 124 pages. Jacket with light toning to spine, mild edgewear, rubbing. Small sticker removal scuff to front pastedown. Else clean and sound.

Description
Spokane, WA: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 2005. First Edition. 367pp. Octavo [24 cm] Blue cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and the backstrip. Near fine. Frontier Military Series XXIV (24). The Civil War left the western trails vulnerable and dangerous. Emigrants still streamed westward and demanded protection. The mail still had to be delivered, the telegraph protected. The newly minted states of California and Oregon on the Pacific Coast were precious to the government in Washington, D.C., and the Mormon settlements in the Great Basin demanded close attention following the Utah War of 1858. The 11th Ohio played a crucial role during the Civil War years on the overland roads. The first battalion sent to Fort Laramie in 1862 had not volunteered to serve out west, though those recruited in 1863 and 1864 knew they were destined for western duty. They were among the last volunteers raised from any state during the Civil War to be discharged in July 1866. The thunder of the greater war drowned out the violent and deadly war in the West along the overland roads. And it has continued to do so. While both the Civil War and nineteenth-century western history have provided fertile fields for historical investigation, few historians have focused on the plight of the overland roads during the Civil War or the impact of the war on the area they crossed. The 11th Ohio had enlisted to fight Confederates. Instead they fought Native Americans, escorted emigrants and mail, and operated, rebuilt, and restrung the telegraph. They built and rebuilt tiny stations and other posts along the roads, died in combat, and froze to death in winter storms. For the most part, these Ohioans were strung out along the roads in small detachments, seldom in company strength, and the regiment never served or fought as one. The Platte River and Overland roads, truly the primary lines of communication between the settled parts of the Union east of the Missouri River and the newer states on the Pacific Coast, were guarded by the 11th Ohio from the Missouri River to just west of the Continental Divide. Fights at Sand Creek and Platte Bridge affected the troops, directly and indirectly, and play an important part in their story. The Civil War was a time of increased conflict between settlers, emigrants, and the native peoples east of the Rockies. Arapahos, Bannocks, Cheyenne, Comanches, Kiowas, and Sioux all figure prominently in the story.
