Description
New York City and Sterling, Pennsylvania: Brown Brothers, 1912. Thirty-nine photographs measuring 8 x 10 inches and smaller. With Brown Brothers stamps verso and many with manuscript captions verso. Conditions vary; mainly very good.. Thirty-nine photographs, mainly of Ellis Island, with one from Partridge Island, Saint John, New Brunswick. The photographs include exterior shots of Ellis Island—both its new building and its old one, which burned down in 1897—and shots of new immigrants on boats and inside the processing center. The new arrivals are shown waiting aboard boats; lugging boxes and bags of their belongings to shore; getting their eyes examined for the bacterial infection trachoma which, if they had it, could mean they were returned home; and taking intelligence tests in the form of wooden block puzzles. Several shots show Christmas dinners, with one showing the dining hall elaborately decorated with flowers and banners. Of interest to historians of immigration via Ellis Island around the turn of the century.

Description
Mexico City: A. Carranza y Cia, 1907. Good.. xviii,521,[1]pp. Contemporary pebbled cloth, morocco corners. Corners and spine ends worn; spine sunned; some staining and rubbing to boards. Large, contemporary binder's ticket on front pastedown. Light toning; light dampstaining at fore-edge of initial leaves. Scarce Mexican edition of Willis Alonzo Dewey's Practical Homoeopathic Therapeutica, first published in Philadelphia in 1901. Dewey was one of the most widely recognized practitioners and teachers of homeopathic medicine at the turn of the 20th century, and held positions at the medical schools of several reputable institutions, including the University of Michigan (he also hailed from Ann Arbor). The present work was the third of his major publications, and comprises an alphabetical list of treatments that begins with the prevention of miscarriages ("aborto") and ends with vomit inducers ("vomitos"). An interesting crossover of the craze for homeopathy in the United States to Mexico, but apparently not a very successful one. We locate only one copy, at UC San Francisco.

John B. Gough (1817 - 1886) was a renowned, British-American, temperance orator. Drawing on his personal experiences as a destitute alcoholic, who had lost his wife, child, and business to drinking, Gough turned his life around in 1842 and began travelling and lecturing on the evils of alcohol throughout the US, and later, through Great Britain, as well. He was quite successful and, eventually, expanded his lectures to cover other social subjects. He even appeared as a well-paid lecturer at various lyceums (voluntary associations, which sponsored series of lectures for their subscribers). It was said that throughout his life, Gough had given over 9600 speeches.
