Description
Engraved frontis. (dampstained in outer upper corner with blank corner renewed). 2 p.l. (incl. the frontis.), 4, 345, [1], 2 pp. 8vo, later 18th cent. half-sheep & marbled boards, flat spine gilt. London: J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1725. The very uncommon inventory catalogue of the library of John Bridges (1666-1724), historian of Northamptonshire, who left his library to his two brothers. They prepared this catalogue for sale but their efforts were fruitless as the books were sent to auction before the year was out. This is one of the earliest of all English inventory catalogues. Dibdin called Bridges “a notorious book-collector” and the library contained over 4000 books and MSS. It was notably rich in the history and antiquities of Great Britain and Ireland. Apart from the dampstaining to the frontispiece and — to a much lesser degree — the following three leaves, a fine and crisp copy. Bookplate of the Marquess of Downshire. ❧ D.N.B., II, pp. 1229-30–“the catalogue of his library was long retained as valuable by curious collectors.” Fletcher, English Book Collectors, pp. 156-58. Pollard & Ehrman, p. 212, Table XXV, & no. 222. Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 193 & 206.

Description
Newark: Starbuck & Dunham, Book and Job Printers, 1883. 24pp. Octavo. Original printed wrappers. Moderate wear and soiling, some tape residue along spine of upper wrapper, spine chipped. Ex-General Theological Library, with small ink stamp in upper margin on verso of title page. Overall, still very good. Following swiftly on the heels of the Suwanee Convention of Southern Bishops in late July 1883, a large gathering of clergy and laymen met in New York City to organize the work of the Afro-American clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was a historic moment, and "of the forty-two Colored Clergy of the United States only four had responded to the call in the negative, and three others had failed to respond." A Committee was formed, chaired by Alexander Crummell, to draft a statement to the Church in America. Here, the Committee calls attention "to the moral disasters which have come to our race through slavery – how family life, parental authority, and marriage integrity have been broken down by servitude," and issues a call for "an extraordinary effort for the erection of Churches throughout the South," especially in the large urban centers. In addition to the proceedings, the work includes a "Sermon on Church Work by the Colored People" by Rev. Thomas A. Starkey, the Bishop of Northern New Jersey, a brief Finance Committee Report, and concludes with the "Regulations of the Women's Auxiliary of the Convocation of the Colored Clergy." The latter is comprised of five articles and an addendum, plus a listing of twenty women belonging to the New York and Newark branches of the organization. A scarce work, with just over a dozen institutional copies. Not in Blockson. Library Company, Afro-Americana 8507A.

Description
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1976. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book in a Near Fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing to the extremities and along the spine fold. Jacket price clipped, but still showing part of the original dollar sign. Overall a pleasing, unread example. Norman Maclean's 1976 semi-autobiographical short story collection, including the titular piece along with "Logging and Pimping and 'Your pal, Jim'" and "USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky." In 1977 the Pulitzer Prize committee suggested "A River Runs Through It" be awarded the prize for fiction, but they were overruled and no prize was awarded. The book was adapted into a 1992 Robert Redford film, starring Craig Scheffer and Brad Pitt and would receive three Academy Award nominations. Critic Alfred Kazin praised the book in a review for the Chicago Tribune: "There are passages here of physical rapture in the presence of unsullied primitive America that are as beautiful as anything in Thoreau and Hemingway.". Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
