Description
Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques, 1933. Understated bookplate to front endpaper, with a signature to first page that reads "Brassai," but unlikely in the photographer's hand. Light edgewear to spiral-bound illustrated wrappers; a better than very good copy lacking serious defects.. First Edition. Spiral bound quarto, sixty-four gravure plates. The best-known and most iconic of the great Paris photobooks, printed in a deep gravure so tactile it seems almost as if charcoal will rub off on the hands of the viewer. The cobblestone covers and endpapers are particularly evocative. (Parr / Badger, v1, 134; Roth 76-77).

Description
London: J. Murray; James Ridgway; and Thomas Wilkie, 1821. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. 236 x 154 mm. (9 1/4 x 6"). Two volumes. Edited by Thomas Moore. Contemporary dun-colored publisher's boards, flat spines with paper labels, edges untrimmed. In modern blue buckram chemises inside matching morocco-backed slipcases with gilt titling on the spines. Front pastedown with the engraved armorial bookplate of R. B. Æ. Macleod of Cadboll, Invergordon Castle, 1877 (see below). Lowndes III, 2379. ◆Paper boards a little soiled, extremities with vague wear, occasional wax drippings (noticeable, without being disfiguring, at the bottom of perhaps 20 openings), otherwise excellent, the leaves fresh and bright with generous margins, and the insubstantial boards entirely solid and showing very few signs of use. This is an especially appealing set of the first collection of Sheridan works, edited by his biographer Thomas Moore, and offered here in the rare original boards. Sheridan (1751-1816) was one of the most intriguing figures in 18th century Britain. After a brilliant career as playwright and theatrical manager at Drury Lane, he entered Parliament in 1780, became Undersecretary of State in 1782, and Secretary of the Treasury the next year. According to Day, "most of his political life was spent in the Whig opposition, where he was the recognized equal of Fox and Burke. Sheridan was an intimate of the Prince of Wales, even composing the love letters dispatched by his royal highness." This set includes his plays "The Rivals," "St. Patrick's Day," "The Duenna," "A Trip to Scarborough," "The Camp," "The Critic," "Pizarro," and (his comic masterpiece) "The School for Scandal." Sheridan's "Verses to the Memory of David Garrick," the great actor and impresario, is also found here. DNB tells us, "Sheridan's wit, his sense of fun, and his mockery of sentimental comedy underpin his depiction of the contrast between appearance and reality. His comic invention exposes folly and hypocrisy through dramatic crises in a timeless way, and this has meant the plays remain alive, not only on stage but in radio and television productions as well." The dramatist died in poverty but was buried, with elaborate ceremony, in Westminster Abbey. Our former owner Robert Bruce Æneas Macleod was the son of Scottish whig MP Roderick Macleod (1786-1853), Lord Lieutenant of Cromarty..

Boston: Printed by Samuel Hall, 1793. 54pp, stitched in contemporary plain drab wrappers. Untrimmed, lightly foxed, Very Good. Evans 26469. ESTC W32048. [offered with] ESSAYS ON LIBERTY AND NECESSITY; IN WHICH THE TRUE NATURE OF LIBERTY IS STATED AND DEFENDED...IN TWO PARTS. PART SECOND. Newbedford, Massachusetts: John Spooner. 1795. 96pp + tipped-in errata slip on blank verso of title page. Later marbled wrappers, lightly toned, Very Good. Evans 29874. ESTC 32047. Reviewing West's 'Essays,' DAB explains West's "reply to the views of Jonathan Edwards...that divine prescience does not imply the necessity of future events; that self-determination is consistent with moral agency; that the Deity's permission of sin is proof for the self-governing power of men; and that volition is an effect which has a cause. Of all the replies to Edwards's Freedom of the Will, West's was most thorough and most persuasive. He helped to widen the rift that had already appeared between Calvinist and Arminian.

Description
[Shreveport, La, 1965. Good.. 64pp. Original pictorial light blue wrappers printed in dark blue, stapled. Text printed in blue. Moderate staining and soiling to wrappers and text, minor insect damage to wrappers. An unrecorded program celebrating the anniversary and the dedication of a new building for the African-American-owned J.S. Williams Funeral Home & Burial Association in Louisiana. Williams is described on the front wrapper as "Shreveport's Oldest Negro Business." The celebration took place Sunday, April 11, 1965, and the program includes a schedule of events for the day. The present work contains a history of the business, portraits of the company's embalmers and other staff, memorial messages addressed to some deceased former employees, and more. Most of the work is taken up with advertisements largely from the African-American community in and around Shreveport. The advertisers include other Black churches, local African-American schools like George Washington Carver High School, organizations such as the Supreme Colored Helpers Society of America and the Colored Association of Louisiana, and businesses including Booker T. Washington Nursing Home, Shreveport Mutual Funeral Home, and the Mays Printing Company. The wealth of ads practically add up to a de facto African-American community directory of contemporary Shreveport. We could locate no other copies of this work in OCLC or elsewhere.

Description
New York: the photographer; John D. Chase, Optician, 1864. Albumen silver print stereograph (8.5 x 17.5 cm.). Two prints mounted on card. The photographer is identified in a copyright registration statement. "The New England Kitchen", in The Brooklyn & Long Island Sanitary Fair, February 22, 1864, pages 72-78 states that this demonstration kitchen, not of contemporary cooking methods, but of old fashioned hearth cooking, was a hit with the crowds at the fair and a significant financial success. An experiment in cooking education by example, The New England Kitchen was aimed at weaning immigrants off of their food traditions and toward a "New England diet" (see Laura Shapiro's excellent Perfection Salad, pages 147 ff. Apparently the plans for the New England Kitchen began before the fair plans been begun. The image offered here, labeled "Interior View" was one of a series of twelve photographs taken by W.E. James of 247 Fulton Steet. We have located no sets of the photographs in any institution collection.
