Description
1333. 17 characters per column; 5 columns per page. Text-block height: 126 mm. Each column ruled in gold, with gold borders on top & bottom. Eight vols. (172 x 6285; 7260; 6830; 5980; 6530; 6280; 5860; 5125 mm.). Narrow 8vo, orig. semi-stiff blue boards (some rubbing), decorated on the outside with patterns in gold & silver of flowers, heightened with sprays of gold (kindei; “golden mud”); inner endpapers decorated with gold & silver speckles. Title and volume number in manuscript on each upper cover. [Japan, probably at Nara]: Kasuga-ban, mid- to late Kamakura (ca. 1250-1333). A luxuriously produced and most unusual small-format kasuga-ban edition of the complete Lotus Sutra in 28 chapters, originally translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva and completed in 406. Our copy of this edition is a luxury version, with each column of text ruled in gold pigment. We have never seen a small-format kasuga-ban before. The Lotus Sutra is the most influential of all sutra and “was highly influential in East Asia, inspiring both a range of devotional practices as well as the creation of new Buddhist schools that had no Indian analogues.”–Buswell & Lopez, eds., The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism, p. 730. For several Japanese schools of Buddhism, the Lotus Sutra remains their central text and is considered to be the only valid Buddhist sutra for the Degenerate Age. These handsome scrolls have been printed on high-quality pale brown-gray paper (gampi, or mulberry fibers), and printed in bold, thick strokes, using lacquer-like black sumi ink, typical of Kamakura and Muromachi kasuga-ban printings (kasuga-ban is a general term for publications of the Nara monasteries; see below). Kumarajiva (344-413), Buddhist monk, scholar, missionary, and translator, who came from the Silk Road kingdom of Kucha, was famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of Indian and Vendantic learning. He was the greatest translator of Buddhist scripture from Sanskrit into Chinese, and it was largely owing to his efforts and influence that Buddhist religious and philosophical ideas were disseminated in China. Following many years of study in Kucha and Kashmir, he arrived in Chang’an (now Xi’an), in 401. with a great reputation. He became known as “teacher of the nation.” There, he headed a famous school of translators, and together they translated many important texts into Chinese, including the Vimalakirti, the Diamond, the Lotus, and the Amitabha sutra. It is most unusual to find an early printing of a long sutra, like the Lotus Sutra, textually complete; usually one finds just one part of a text in one scroll. Complete sets of this work are of the greatest rarity. PROVENANCE: our set has been signed twice by the Buddhist scholar and priest Dohan [Kakuhonbo] (1179-1252), a “Kamakura-period Shingon scholar-monk from Koyasan, who wrote extensively on the works of Kukai and Kakuban. He is well-known for his esoteric writings on the Pure Land.”–Buswell & Lopez, eds., op. cit., pp. 263-64. A fine and remarkable set, preserved in an attractive old wooden box. There is some relatively minor worming, touching some characters. ❧ K.B. Gardner, “Centres of Printing in Medieval Japan: late Heian to early Edo period” in British Library Occasional Papers 11. Japanese Studies (ed. by Yu-Ying Brown), London: 1990, p. 159–”The term Kasuga-ban became used more loosely, in a wider sense, to denote publications of the Nara monasteries in general, not only of the Kofukuji. The printing of Kasuga-ban in this broader sense flourished throughout the Kamakura period and up to the end of Muromachi (ca. 1570).”.

Description
[Various locations in California, mostly Sausalito and other locations in Marin and Sonoma Counties, 1930. Very good.. Nine photograph albums in a variety of bindings, containing approximately 810 photographs, the great majority paper prints but with a fair share of tintypes and CDVs in the earliest two albums, plus 102 loose negatives, three negative rolls, and a metal container housing 135 later color slides. A phenomenal collection of photographs from noted but still somewhat obscure California artist, teacher, and amateur shutterfly Isabel Margaret Porter Collins. The collection numbers over 800 images ranging from early family images featuring dozens of Collins' antecedents from the 1870s to 1890s, personal albums featuring Collins with her family and friends in various locations in California over the course of about thirty years, and an album and some further images produced by Collins' son Henry Benjamin Collins, whom she called Ben. The collection was most likely retained by Ben. Isabel Margaret Porter Collins (1875-1954) was an artist and teacher who produced both amateur and fine art photography. She was born in Petaluma to a prominent Marin County family descending from the Collins-Dowd-Harris-Howard-Porter line. Collins was a talented visual artist and studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art from 1898-1900. She then worked as a pen-and-ink artist for Shreve & Company, producing greeting cards and place cards. She was subsequently employed by Dirk Van Erp, from whom she learned coppersmithing, producing lamps, shades, pen trays, and other hammered copper objects. In 1906, she married Henry Collins and moved to Sausalito, where she taught in Bay Area public schools until her retirement in 1945. She participated in major exhibitions for the San Francisco Art Association (1896 and 1901) and earned a gold medal at the California State Fair in 1900. In her later years, Collins lived with her daughter in Seattle. After she died, Collins was buried in the family plot in Ukiah, California. The photograph albums are not organized in strict chronological order, as the images overlap slightly in time within a few of the albums. Still, the albums are detailed as follows, in roughly chronological order: 1) [Annotated Family Photograph Album]. [1870s-1890s]. [16] leaves, illustrated with forty-four photographs, mostly cabinet cards measuring around 6 x 4 inches, inset one per page into picture windows, with the last six pages comprised of tintypes presented six per page in smaller picture windows. Contemporary padded cloth covers, central metal device on front cover, manuscript titles to spine reading, "Harris Howard Porter Collins." Front cover detached, cloth worn and somewhat soiled, fore-edge clasp lacking. Occasional wear to photos. The album opens with a nice image of Collins' mother Eliza Harris Porter, captioned with her name, as well as her birth and death dates. Similarly captioned photographs populate the album throughout, featuring Collins' family members and friends such as Alpheus Josephus Harris, Julia Harris, Polk Porter, and so forth, providing a solid avenue down which to pursue Collins' ancestry. Many of the images emanate from Honolulu, Hawaii, where Collins' family lived and worked for some time. 2) [Annotated Family Photograph Album]. [1880s-1890s]. [13] leaves, illustrated with twenty-five photographs, mostly cabinet cards measuring around 6 x 4 inches, inset one per page into picture windows. Contemporary red padded cloth with central metal device and corner pieces on front cover, four small metal feet on rear cover, two music boxes stored within the rear cover (which no longer appear to be working), and metal clasp on fore-edge. Contents generally nice, with occasional dust-soiling. Like the first album, this collection of photographs is comprised of cabinet card images of Collins' antecedents, beginning with Josephine Porter, and also including another image of Collins' mother, "Polk with Josie Porter 8-12-82 Healdsburg," "Joe Porter Weller, Nevada," "Mr. Crow Nevada Cattleman," Pamela Everett Howard Harris, and others. Most notably, this album includes an image of a young Collins herself, with the manuscript caption reading "Isabelle Porter (Collins)." In addition to the inset photographs in the album, there are several items laid in, including later letters to Collins' descendants and a few additional photographs. Another good opportunity to pursue Collins' family lineage. 3) [Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album of Family and Scenes in Marin County]. [1905-1912]. [16] leaves, illustrated with 104 photographs. Oblong folio. Contemporary gray wrappers. Moderate edge wear and minor soiling to wrappers. Minor dust-soiling to contents, but mostly clean and in nice shape. This is the first album in the collection that we can assume is comprised mostly of photographs by Isabel Collins herself. The album features over a hundred shots of Collins and her family, mostly centered on her son Ben, her mother Eliza, and various aunts, uncles, and family friends. The family is pictured at home in Sausalito, as well as traveling around to nearby places in Marin and Sonoma counties such as Fort Ross, Sonoma Mission, Slide Ranch, Muir Woods, Carmel, and Mill Valley. Apparently, Collins's son Ben has occasionally provided his own later captions in some of the albums, evidenced here by his inclusion of the word "Grandma" over an image of Eliza Harris Porter. In addition to displaying Collins' talent for photography, this album and most of those that follow provide a wide view of the scenery and landscape of the area of California just north of the San Francisco Bay Area where Collins spent most of her married and family life. 4) Marin - Monterey & Mendocino Cos. (Arizona) Isabel P. Collins [cover title]. [1906-1913]. [68] leaves, illustrated with 133 photographs. Small square quarto. Contemporary Japanese-style blank book, string tied, printed title label on front wrapper. Some wear and abrasions to wrappers, last few blank pages heavily chipped. Moderate foxing and light occasional staining. A custom photograph album created by Collins, featuring scenes in and around the three title counties, Marin, Monterey, and Mendocino, as well as a short section near the end capturing a family visit to Arizona. The photos begin in Sausalito at the Collins home, and also include pictures of Boyes Hot Springs, San Miguel Mission, the Presidio Chapel in Monterey, Santa Barbara, and Sherwood Creek, among others. This album also contains numerous images of the Sherwood School in Sherwood, California in 1912, where Collins taught school. These images include a class picture of Collins and her class standing outside their one-room schoolhouse, other pictures of the school and its students, local Sherwood residents, a sheep farm in the area, and some mining scenes around Sherwood. The small number of photos from Arizona include a shot of Collins labeled, "circa 1900 (1st teaching job)." Due to the language on the printed title card, we assume all or most of the images were shot by Collins herself. 5) [Vernacular Photograph Album of Scenes in Marin and San Mateo Counties]. [ca. 1910]. [48] leaves, illustrated with 111 photographs. Oblong quarto. Contemporary limp black cloth, "Photographs" in gilt on front cover. Minor edge wear. Contents largely sound and clean. Lightly annotated with a few location captions, but largely un-annotated. A collection of photographs featuring Collins' children and family members engaged on a farm and in other outdoor activities in Sherwood and Pescadero, attending the "S.D. Fair," and engaged in other recreational activities in and around Sausalito. Two loose images in this album display Collins' photo credit stamp on the verso, reading, "Isabel Porter Collins Photograph." 6) Snap-Shots [manuscript cover title]. [1911-1930s]. [12] leaves, illustrated with 116 photographs. Oblong folio. Contemporary tan paper-covered boards, manuscript title label on front board, single string tie. Minor wear, some offsetting to rear cover. One leaf detached, but mostly clean and nice internally. A heavily annotated vernacular photograph album that appears to have been compiled by both Isabel and her son Ben, and likely mostly the latter. The majority of the images, though, were likely taken by Isabel, though some images are credited to Ben's friends Lafka and Harpo. The photos capture a wide variety of scenes of the Collins family in Sausalito, hunting, camping, and more, as well as scenes of Ben's social life and travel to Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Salinas. Interestingly, this album includes a portrait photograph of Collins captioned, "Mother 1898 Art Sch[ool]." 7) Photos by Isabel Porter Collins - Vallejo [manuscript cover title]. [1920s-1930s]. [38] leaves, illustrated with seventy-six photographs and a handful of ephemeral items. Small oblong quarto. Contemporary Japanese-style blank book, string tied, manuscript title on front cover. Minor wear and soiling to covers. The preponderance of this album concerns Collins' time as a teacher at Lincoln School in Vallejo in the 1920s, with numerous images of the students, fellow teachers, and outdoor scenes around the school. One of the more interesting series of images pictures the Kikuchi children, with a later note in Collins' hand reading, "Japanese Father Died, Consentration [sic] Camp WWII. Was Vallejo Barber/Wife." There are also several photos of the Collins children and other family members visiting San Francisco. This album was most likely compiled by Collins herself, as it includes a few hand-illustrated gift cards from her daughter, Clairice Thorsen nee Collins, and programs from events attended by Isabel and her two kids with manuscript captions by Collins. 8) [Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album Recording Isabel Collins' Travels]. [1935-1936]. [77] loose leaf sheets, illustrated with 178 photographs and about thirty postcards. Quarto. Contemporary hardcover three-ring binder, covered in decorative floral paper, possibly by Collins herself. Minor wear. A few leaves detached from the three-ring binder, minor wear to contents, but mostly clean and in nice shape. A handmade and very personal account of Collins' travels to Santa Barbara, Montecito, Santa Ynez, Tejon Pass, and more in 1935 and 1936, profusely annotated with manuscript captions of the people and places she visited. Collins sees Santa Barbara College, the 1935 Santa Barbara Festival, the 1936 Old Spanish Days Fiesta Parade in Santa Barbara, Huntington Gardens, the Santa Ynez Mission, and more during her travels. A couple of images feature noted California artist Helen Seegert, one captioned "Helen Seegert as a Mexican Flower Girl." The last five pages include a detailed handwritten account and a map detailing the portion of Collins' travels in November 1936. A great many of the vernacular images in this travel album were likely taken by Collins herself, except for the images she distinctly captions with the photo credit of another ("Photo by Leila Robins" or "Anderson's Photo '35"). 9) Vamos a Guaymas Mamie y Ben 1-57 [manuscript cover title]. [1957, 1962]. [5] leaves, illustrated with twenty-three photographs. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black cloth, manuscript title on front cover, spiral bound. Spine worn, moderate edge wear. A short collection of photographs recording Ben Collins and his wife Mamie on a trip to Guaymas, Mexico in 1957 and with four photos of a later vacation to southern California in 1962. In addition to this later album, the present collection includes three negative rolls and a metal container housing 135 color slides dating from the 1950s and '60s, which most likely belong to Ben, as well. The assortment of 102 loose negatives, arranged by place in a couple of envelopes (Sausalito and "Nature Trails Sequoia 1930s"), are most likely Isabel Collins' work. Collins' photographs are positively rare institutionally. The most substantial collection of Collins' work is held by the California Historical Society, numbering 222 photographic prints mostly from her time at the Hopkins Institute. The California State Library holds seven photographs. These two collections are the only institutional records we could find of Collins' work. As such, the present collection most certainly represents the largest collection of Collins' work found anywhere, and apparently the only deep collection of family photographs as well. Previous owner's inscription on title-page. Overall a very nice copy. This work was rarely issued with the same number of photographs. Howes calls for copies to have between 100-120 mounted plates and Cowen notes that "Few copies contain precisely the same number of plates." "Vischer's superb drawings constitute an important historical record of early California. They were executed between 1858 and 1867 and cover a wide range of subjects. After his initial attempts at lithography failed, Vischer had his drawings photographed, reproduced, and mounted in albums published with varying numbers of plates. There was a supplementary volume on California missions published two years later. The Pictorial was sold by subscription. Farquhar notes that after the initial twenty copies were made up for the original subscribers, Vischer announced subsequent copies would be issued in four different formats, of which the first (100 plates, bound in half morocco, $50) most closely conforms to the present copy." (John Howell). "Vischer, a native of Bavaria, first visited California in 1842, and returned to live in San Francisco in 1847. He traveled extensively throughout the area and made sketches wherever he went. The present volume collects those sketches along with maps of the area, and actual photographs. Subjects include: missions, cattle ranches, scenes in the Sierra Nevadas, mining scenes, landmarks such as Yosemite Valley, Mammoth Tree Grove, Mt. Tamalpais, Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, &c." (Bonhams). Description
San Diego: Brighton Press, 1990. First Edition. Clamshell box by David Brock. Fine. Like New mostly.. DeLoss McGraw. No. 25 of 90 copies in limitation. Stunning color plates thickly painted to the point that one would perceive the plates as entirely painted, perhaps, and not just richly painted woodcuts. The modernist artwork has elements of Surrealism, abstraction, deliberately naivete, primitivism, Fauvism, etc. etc. We aren't saying that each illustration has all of these elements fused together, but rather one sees one influence here, another there. Poems are Japanese Tankas by Tamiko Abe, Akitaka Uhimura, Kancko Murayama and Isamu Nagase. The clamshell box is 56 by 19 cm, and 3 cm deep. The leaves within are 54 by 17.5 cm. Unpaginated, 25 leaves, counting artwork. The artwork is accompanied by "tissue guards" which are here of clear mylar, and these we aren't counting in our leaf count. The artist's book was printed on luxurious linen paper, and clearly attention was given to every element of quality. The only issue of the whole package is that the clamshell box has a band of vaguely white discoloration or color loss, perhaps 2 cm wide, on its back, and two shorter bands nearby. These look like simply embedded dust, and they are faint. While we think they should be erasable, we have been unable to.

[New York]: [Columbia Artists' Management], 1952. Good. Program [stapled wrappers] measures 11½” x 8¾”; album sleeves are 10” x 10”. Pp. [24] + three LPs in cardboard sleeves. Program good due to detached wrappers; otherwise very good with light wear; album sleeves are good due to heavy wear, records are scratched and not tested. This is a rare souvenir program and three long playing records documenting de Paur's Infantry Chorus. Leonard de Paur first began his music studies at New Jersey's Bordentown School (known as the “Tuskegee of the North”) and sang with, composed and conducted for Hall Johnson's noted Negro Choir. In 1936, while a student at Columbia, he became the musical director of the Negro Unit of the Federal Theater Project in New York City. He also studied at the Institute of Musical Arts, now the Juilliard School. In 1942 de Paur enlisted in the United States army as a private and rose to the rank of Captain. He was the music director for the 1943 play Winged Victory, produced by the Army Air Forces as a morale booster and fundraiser for the Army Emergency Relief Fund, and one year later was assigned to lead the 372nd Infantry Regiment of the Negro National Guard. This sensational program tells the story of de Paur's Infantry Chorus (IC). The “exciting” group was “born in off-duty hours” by a group of soldiers from the 372nd who “liked to sing”: “During working hours these men were expert riflemen, canoneers, cooks, drivers, chaplain's assistants, medical aides and office clerks. At night they met in mess halls, chapels or wherever else they could to rehearse the songs they have since made famous.” The 372nd Infantry Glee Club, as they were first known, had been gaining fame for their talents, and de Paur had been recognized for his musical background; he joined the unit in 1944 not just as Captain, but also as choral director. The army arranged a “cross-country tour” with concerts “in every large city” and multiple radio broadcasts. The group also performed at Franklin Roosevelt's Fourth Inaugural Celebration. When the 372nd was dispatched to the Pacific, “its fame had preceded it to Hawaii.” A concert to the Pacific High Command was deemed a “terrific success” and IC was detached from the regiment and made an independent unit under de Paur's command: “The result was military entertainment history made daily at Army, Navy and Marine installations throughout the Pacific and eventually in Europe.” IC could average six shows a day (totaling over 2,000 concerts) and performed everywhere from hospital wards and supply bases to on the decks of battleships. “Unlike most Negro choruses,” IC did not “feature spirituals particularly, making up much of its repertoire from the music of the many lands” they visited as soldiers. In 1947 the 35-man chorus was discharged in New York City and immediately signed an unheard-of two-year contract for every member with Columbia Records. For ten years IC set records for Columbia in both concert appearances and receipts. They also recorded ten albums. In 1957 de Paur left to found the de Paur Opera Gala, featuring some of IC's stars, and later formed a chorus that toured 18 African nations under the United States Information Agency. He served as associate director of the Lincoln Center International Choral Festival, and then director of community relations for Lincoln Center, retiring in 1988. The book further holds two complete musical programs, lyrics, version notes and more. It also lists the entire roster of the chorus, with each member's role and hometown. Many photographic images include artistic views of IC and of their fearless leader, individual portraits of soloists, and a great shot of de Paur with Lieutenant General Robert Richardson, “one of the top sponsors” of the group who “frequently turned up at its performances.” There are images of IC amid the backdrop of war, visiting Iwo Jima and arriving in Guam for a “briefing on local conditions” with a host of military vehicles in the background. The program is accompanied by three LPs, none of which are rare, but one of them is signed by approximately 15 members of the chorus.

Extracted from the journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries, the article comprising pp. 344 to 357. Quarto, 240 x 300 mm. [8] ff. A Near Fine copy. Contemporary blue paper wrappers with printed label. Unopened. Some chipping to edges of wrappers, and a bit of dustsoiling, but a very clean copy overall. Sir Frederic Madden, Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, was "a giant of Victorian scholarship" whose work as an editor, translator, and conservator helped preserve and disseminate some of the most important English stories in history (ODNB). He was, crucially, responsible for the preservation of the story of Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight, having rediscovered the sole surviving manuscript of the Arthurian legend in the 1820s. Madden translated the story and secured its publication in 1839, re-introducing the legend to nineteenth-century readers and, ultimately, influencing writers like J.R.R. Tolkien. He also carried out conservation work on the Cotton MS, which contains the only known copy of Beowulf, and edited an 1847 edition of Layamon's Brut, "the most important of the English riming chronicles," which contains the first appearance of any Arthurian legends in the English language (Long, English Literature). In the 1540s, the Spanish peer Juan Esteban Manrique de Lara y Cardona, the 3rd Duke of Nájera (1504 - 1558), visited England to meet privately with King Henry VIII. In his introductory paragraphs, Madden writes that there are few English records of the Duke's visit, and none of his meeting with the King; the record of Pedro de Gante, the Duke's secretary, then, stands as the only surviving account of the meeting, and of his introduction to Queen Catherine Parr and Princess Mary. Near Fine.
