Exiled from Mexico in 1830, Zavala came to New York to seek colonization for his empresario grants in southeastern Texas, transferring his interests to the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. "From December 1832 until October 1833 he again served as governor of the state of Mexico, before returning to the Congress as a deputy for his native state of Yucatán. Named by President Antonio López de Santa Anna in October 1833 to serve as the first minister plenipotentiary of the Mexican legation in Paris, he reported to that post in the spring of 1834. When he learned that Santa Anna had assumed dictatorial powers in April of that year, Zavala denounced his former ally and resigned from his diplomatic assignment. Disregarding Santa Anna's orders to return to Mexico City, he traveled to New York and then to Texas, where he arrived in July 1835. From the day of his arrival, he was drawn into the political caldron of Texas politics. Although he first advocated the cause of Mexican Federalism, within a few weeks he became an active supporter of the independence movement; he served in the Permanent Council and later as the representative of Harrisburg in the Consultation and the Convention of 1836. At the convention he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, along with Jose Francisco Ruiz, Jose Antonio Navarro, and fifty-six other delegates" (Handbook of Texas). The present work described his journey and impressions of the United States during his visit from 1830-1831 and was published while stationed in Paris in 1834. Raines praises the work as "One of the few books of travel in the U.S. worth reading. A fine picture of American manners, customs, and institutions, by a Mexican republican, with some notice of Austin's colonization in Texas ... A true patriot and uncompromising lover of liberty" (Raines). The work is further noted as "an incredibly important, although little known...meticulously written narrative about the democratic culture and institutions of the United States. Zavala's narrative not only stands as a major document of early Mexican-American letters, but also as one of the first theoretical and ethnographic examinations of democracy as a political and cultural institution. Thus, Zavala's book challenges the widespread acceptance by American scholars that Alexis de Toqueville's Democracy in America (1835) is the first book to take United States democracy as a focus of political and cultural study ... A poster celebrating the Eighth Infantry Regiment, Illinois National Guard, during World War I. Text on the poster reads: “Eighth Illinois Regiment Now In France / The Regiment was mustered in the U.S. Volunteer Service as the Eighth Infantry, 370th U. S. National Guard, Illinois U. S. Volunteers. / On June 28th, officers were commissioned by Governor John R. Tanner, then Governor of the State of Illinois. The first commander was JOHN R. MARSHALL who commanded the Regiment and saw service during the Spanish American War in Cuba. He was placed on the retired list January 1st, 1914, and was succeeded by the present Commander, COLONEL FRANKLIN A. DENNISON, January 12th, 1914, who is at present Commanding Officer in France. The Eighth Regiment is now about 3,000 strong, and is now in France on active duty. There are over 157,000 negro troops either in France or on their way.” The Eighth Illinois was the only African American combat regiment at that time that also had Black officers. Brig. General Franklin A. Denison (pictured at the top left and mislabeled as “Franklin H. Denison”) was Colonel of the regiment in France and was the first Black American to be promoted above Colonel when he became a Brigadier General in 1918; when Denison was replaced with a white officer, Lieutenant Colonel Otis Beverly Duncan of the Eighth became the highest-ranking African American officer in the US Army. The Eighth, fighting under the French Army, saw significant combat, earning the nickname “Black Devils” from the Germans and receiving more honors than any other American regiment on the Western Front. We find records of holdings at Yale and the Chicago Public Library, but no examples on the market or at auction.

First edition; 10 x 7 1/4; self wraps, pp. [1], 2-3, [5]; illustrated with a small vignette at the top of first page and two photolithographed, reduced-scale plates from the original, manuscript engraving and drawing; faded stamp to top margin of first page; repairs to spine; in good to very good condition.A patent application for a bizarre contraption, it pertained to a baby walker on rails, invented by Edward Firnhaber - a Nebraska farmer and breeder of poultry. The walker consisted of an oval, elevated track - easily put together in sections and disassembled in one's living room - and a carriage with wheels, the latter moving along the track, with the child standing on the ground, holding on to the edges of the carriage, and moving along with it. According to Firnhaber, the system effectively contained (more precisely, trapped) the toddler, not allowing it to wander off, easily done with the free-moving walkers of his competitors, and thus keeping it safe from getting hurt, or getting underfoot of moms and nannies. The carriage also contained a seat in the back, allowing the kid to sit and rest, and a removable tray for toys, entertaining the child, while he/she was learning to walk. One could surmise from the document that a strong selling point for the system was the fact that the toddler would naturally lean his/her weight on the frame of the walker, thus preventing his/her legs from bowing outward and damaging the still-developing bones.
