Description
1738. First Edition. (CHARLES I) HOOPER, Jacob. An Impartial History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, During the Reign of King Charles the First… London: Printed and Sold by all the Booksellers in Town and Country, 1738. Folio (7-1/2 by 12 inches), period-style full speckled sheep gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $3400.First edition of Hooper's ""impartial"" history, profusely illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait depicting Charles I on horseback and 26 full-page engraved plates, many depicting naval and land battles.Hooper drew on Clarendon, Kennet, Echard, and Rushworth to compile his history. ""Everybody that shall duly consider the whole account of these transactions, will be able to impute mistakes, miscarriages, and faults enough to both sides… But we cannot omit making this one observation, that where any King by ill judgment, or ill fortune, of his own, or those entrusted by him in the chief administration of his government, happen to fall into an interest contrary to that of his people, and will pursue that mistake, that Prince must have terrible conflicts in the course of his reign… On the other hand, that people, who, though invaded and oppressed in their just rights and liberties, shall not rest satisfied with reasonable reparations and securities, but, having got power into their hands, will make unjustifiable use of it, to the utter subversion of that government they are bound in duty and allegiance to support, do but at last make rods for their own backs, and very often bring upon themselves, from other hands, a more severe bondage than that they had shook off"" (Preface). Plates bound in at rear. Lowndes, 1109. Discreet library markings on verso of title page only.Text and plates generally clean, corners rounded, contemporary calf covers rubbed. A very good copy of this illustrated history.

Description
México: Oficinas Madrileña, 1801. (Lacks first edition text volume, but is accompanied by Second Edition Facsimile of text and plates, bound in leather).. plus 2 loose plates, bound in tree calf, deckled edges, 32 b/w plates by Montes de Oca, 1 added plate (p. 28) not part of original and not by Montes de Oca, some plates out of order. Documentation of the life of San Felipe de Jesus, copy genuine despite some variations. Mexico's first and only Saint to be martyred in Japan, born in 1572. Young Felipe Casas Martinez o Canales Martinez entered the Franciscan convent of Santa Barbara de Puebla. As a silversmith he went to the Philippines where he entered in 1592 the Convent of Santa Maria de Los Angeles, taking the habit in 1594. Two years later he embarked for Mexico to be ordained. Unfortunately he was shipwrecked on Japanese shores, and with other priests was taken prisoner and executed by crucifixion. He was made a Saint in 1862. Complimenting the text are black and white plates by Montes de Oca. Jose Maria Montes de Oca was a copper engraver active in Mexico City 1788 to approximately 1820. He was director of the San Carlos Academy of painting and illustrated the three volumes of Periquillo Sarmiento by Fernandez de Lizardi as well as many plans and views of the city. His plates of hummingbirds and orchids are highly prized. Very good, clean and bright copy.

Description
London: Thomas Tegg, (1810). "The Phoenix was one of thirteen ships of the Royal Navy lost in a terrible hurricane about October, 1780. The ship was helpless in the storm and just as it was feared that she would founder she struck on the coast of Cuba. Most of the crew, about 250, were rescued... Most of the other ships lost had no survivors. Archer's lively letter to his mother gives many details of the cruise and wreck" - Huntress 143 C. De Laval was shipwrecked off the Maldives and spent ten years there before returning to France. The "Phoenix" account was reprinted by Tegg, with De Laval's account added. This is listed as 153C in Huntress, and is the edition being offered here. Bound in old marbled wraps, with dramatic folding frontispiece (a Tegg staple) partially rebacked.. 18 cm. 28 pp. b/w folding aquatint frontispiece
