Description
FREDERICK WEYERHAEUSER (1834-1914). One of the wealthiest Americans ever, Weyerhaeuser was a German-American timber mogul and founder of the Weyerhaeuser Company. BAILEY DAVENPORT (1823-1890). Davenport was the son of Colonel George Davenport, the founding father of Davenport, IowaDS. 1 pg. 8 x 3 . November 15, 1881. Rock Island, Illinois. A partly-printed document endorsed on the back Pay to the Order of HC Putnam F Weyerhaeuser. The check from the Peoples National Bank of Rock Island, Illinois indicates the following: Pay to the order of F. Weyerhaeuser, Esq. Pt. Twenty five thousand Dollars. On the reverse, there are the signatures of H C. Putnam, E.H. Bailey Esq and V.M. Bayley. Bailey Davenport was the bank president of the Peoples National Bank, and Weyerhaeuser served on the banks board of directors. Henry Cleveland Putnam (1832-1912) was a lumber baron, like Weyerhaeuser, from Wisconsin and a noted philanthropist. The check reveals the expensive, and likely commonplace, business transactions between these three individuals over Pacific Northwest timber lands Putnam and Weyerhaeuser had invested in. The check is very ornate, printed in black on blue stock with a directive border and typeface; it has a cut cancellation and it is in fine condition. Weyerhaeuser is a scarce business autograph.

New York: W. H. B. Creagh, Publisher, 1895. First Edition. Cloth. Very good. F. LUND, L. RENAULT. First edition. 8vo; [1-4] 4-105 [13]pp; gilt stamped blue cloth over board; illustrated in the text; book plate to front pastedown, ownership in ink to front free endpaper; text followed by 11pp of advertisements for equine and riding services; scuffing to cover edges and loss of gilt; very good. Interesting book plate on the front paste-down from Margaret S. [Slade] and Edwin Paul Shattuck. Edwin Paul (1873-1964) was a wall street attorney, judge and a friend of President Herbert Hoover. The ownership inscription dated 1895 was no doubt a relative of Margaret. Nicely illustrated book covering the history, anatomy and physiology of the horse as well as horsemanship instruction.
