Description
Group of 61 letters, 161 typescript and manuscript pages, several postcards, related ephemeral material, and clippings, most letters with their retained mailing envelopes, in good, clean legible condition. Collection of frank, and at times, sexually explicit letters sent to Robert O'Brien by his friends, many of whom were also Gay. O'Brien and his friends seem to have met while serving in the armed forces, several of his friends were still in uniform, stationed in Germany or in combat in the Korean conflict. O'Brien was during the period of this correspondence living in Raymond, New Hampshire, apparently engaged in writing the "Great American Novel". At least one of his friends was in graduate school at Princeton. Others, meanwhile, were Proust quoting n'er do wells, who may have engaged in sex with an underage youth and another who ran a brothel while stationed in Japan. Overall, the collection offers a look at Gay life during the repressive 1950's.

Description
London: October1846 - April 1848: Bradbury and Evans. First Edition. 20 parts in 19, original printed wrappers. The present set has ALL the correct wrappers and ALL the ads called for by Hatton & Cleaver. First issue of text, with the word "Delight" instead of "Joy" mentioned twice on page 284, part IX; with "Capatin" in the last line of page 324, part XI; first state of Advertiser in part XIII, with "October 1847" in unbroken type on p. 1; the word "if" omitted on page 426, line 9 (page number 431 is present) in part XIV; Part XIX/XX with first issue title page, showing Captain Cuttle's hook on his left arm and with the 2 line errata. Part XV, with 10 diary leaves in the Letts, Son & Steer ad. With 40 inserted plates by Hablot K. Brown (Phiz), who also designed the green wrappers. Spines are expertly renewed on parts I, VII, XVI and perhaps a few others. Light soiling to wraps of some parts; neat owner name on front wrap of part XII. Booksellers' ticket on front wrap of several parts. Plates are very good to fine, light tanning at edges of a few. There are a couple of "firsts" in Dombey and Son: the plate "On the Dark Road" in part XVIII is the first of what became known as the "dark plates" - also this is the first appearance of the "horizontal plates" on which the subject is rotated 90 degrees. Altogether an outstanding set. Housed in a turn-of-the-century, solander, pull-off-top slipcase, 3/4 leather, with chemise. Armorial bookplate on chemise and inside the slipcase. Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 227-250.

Description
Des Moines, Iowa: The Wallace Publishing Company, 1919. First Edition. Cloth. Very good. The first edition of Uncle Henry's Own Story by Henry Wallace, signed by Vice President Henry A. Wallace. This work is about "Uncle Henry" Wallace, the father of Agriculture Secretary Henry C. Wallace and grandfather of Vice President Henry A. Wallac. Octavo, [three volumes], 119pp, 129pp, 114pp. Red pebbled cloth, title in gilt on front cover. Each volume with frontispiece portrait of Henry Wallace, with numerous other photographs throughout. Light sunning to spines, notable sunning to volume III. Housed in custom cloth slipcase. This work is signed in Volume III by Vice President Henry A. Wallace. This book is signed by Henry A. Wallace, the 33rd Vice President of the United States. Vice President Wallace came from a family with a notable background in politics and agriculture. Born on October 7, 1888, in Orient, Iowa, he was the son of Henry C. Wallace and Carrie May Wallace. His father, Henry Cantwell Wallace, served as the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1921 until his death in 1924 under Presidents Harding and Coolidge. This role underscored the family's long-standing commitment to agricultural development and reform. Wallace's grandfather, "Uncle Henry" Wallace, was also a prominent figure in American agriculture. He was the founder of the influential farm journal "Wallace's Farmer," which achieved national distribution and played a crucial role in the advancement of agricultural practices and policies in the Midwest. His newspaper studied Iowa farms, pioneered crop rotation, and fertilization programs, thereby greatly increasing production yields. "Uncle Henry" died at the age of 80 in 1916, before this work on this life was published.
