Description
[Oklahoma, 1910. Two broadsides, each measuring 19 x 13 inches. Old folds, some marginal tears and staining, minor loss along central vertical fold of one broadside, light foxing to images. Good condition overall with images very good or better. A rather intriguing pair of promotional posters for the 101 Ranch, once located near modern-day Ponca City, Oklahoma. The 101 Ranch was once one of the largest farm and ranch operations in the United States, and became well known in the early-20th century during the oil rush, and most notably, for hosting a popular Wild West Shows. The ranch was owned by the Miller Brothers, whose neighbor, Pawnee Bill convinced them to host their own show. The present illustrated broadsides contain four monotone photographs (four each) that were perhaps sent to promoters to use for promotional material for their traveling shows. Both posters are stamped "RETURN TO 101 RANCH" in the bottom margin. The illustrations show western scenes, including several pictures of ranch life, a chuck wagon, steer roping, and a group of Native American tepees. We find no other examples of similar material in auction records for 101 Ranch promotional material, and the stamps and the profusion of illustrations suggest that these were sent out to promoters of shows to use for printing of programs, or in some sort of mockup or other commercial motivation. An interesting, and likely unique, relic of a bygone Oklahoma ranch and its heyday hosting a Wild West Show performed by the likes of Will Rogers, Bill Pickett, Tom Mix, Lillian Smith, and numerous others, including an elderly Buffalo Bill. "In 1881 George Washington Miller first used the 101 brand on his cattle, establishing what would become one of the most recognizable names in ranching and western entertainment. A native of Kentucky, he migrated west after the Civil War, settling in Missouri and driving cattle from Texas to the railway heads in Kansas. Miller later moved his ranch to land leased from the Quapaws, in present northeastern Oklahoma, and resided in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Then he relocated his family to Baxter Springs, Kansas, and his ranch to the Cherokee Outlet.... Although there are several stories of why the number 101 was chosen, the most repeated tale claims that it came from a saloon in San Antonio, Texas. After the federal government forced the ranchers out of the Outlet, in 1893 Miller leased Ponca land and continued his operations. The ranch eventually covered more than one hundred thousand acres. Miller's three sons, Joseph, Zachary, and George Lee, gradually became more and more involved in the family businesses. The ranch diversified by growing wheat, cotton, corn, sorghum, alfalfa, various fruit orchards, and vegetables. Livestock included cattle, bison, hogs, poultry, and several horse breeds.... The 101 experimented with crops, creating improved strains of corn and walnut, apple, and pecan trees. Promoted as the "greatest diversified farm on earth," the ranch continued to prosper in the early twentieth century. In 1909 Ernest W. Marland spearheaded the search for oil on ranch land, forming the 101 Ranch Oil Company. The successful oil venture increased the Millers' profits. The 101 earned most of its notoriety from the Wild West shows that it staged. Their show business career began in 1905 when the Millers invited the members of the National Editorial Association to Bliss, Oklahoma, and entertained them with a large exhibition, which they called 'Oklahoma's Gala Day.' The event showcased the skills of their ranch hands and American Indians, including the famous Apache Geronimo, who killed a bison from the front seat of a car" - The Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture.

About very good.
Description
Mexico City, 1870. About very good.. 479,[3]pp., plus two plates including frontispiece portrait. Contemporary half calf and pebbled cloth, spine gilt, boards blind stamped. Light wear to spine ends and bands, corners bumped. Contemporary binder's ink stamp on front pastedown; unobtrusive contemporary manuscript annotation on title page. Light tanning and foxing; a few leaves creased at upper corner. First Mexican edition of this important account of the last year of Maximilian I's reign in Mexico, composed by his personal physician. Samuel Sigfried Karl Basch, a Jewish doctor from Vienna, came to Mexico in 1864 to support the cause of Maximilian and was initially put in charge of a military hospital at Puebla. However, soon he found himself appointed personal physician to the emperor, and became a close confidant of Maximilian, He was a constant companion of the famously frail emperor and was with him until his execution, narrowly escaping death himself. The present work, synthesized from Basch's surviving notes and his recollections, was first published in Germany in 1868, and provides a detailed personal narrative of the last days of Maximilian. The obvious interest of this account to Mexican readers no doubt effected its translation into Spanish for this edition.

Description
S. l. (Washington, DC): N. Peters, Photo-lithographer, 1885. Good. Patent document, partially filled with manuscript notes; 11 1/2 x 7 1/2; off-white card stock - hand-colored engravings and manuscript notations to recto, specification to verso; two lower corners clipped, obscuring part of a penciled-in word; thin chip with small loss of paper to upper right corner; later typed label to upper left corner; a bit of smudging to margins; overall in good to very good condition. An interesting engineering piece, it was created by one Frederic Egner, a noted engineer from St Louis, MO, who had also worked for the People’s Gas Light and Coke Company in Chicago in the early 1880s, consulting, designing, and patenting several other apparatus - for water gas, etc. The current one appeared to have imroved and novel features. Illuminating gas, a mixture of combustible gasses, including methane, carbon oxide, and hydrogen, formed during thermal processing of coal, was widely used for gas lighting through the 19th- and early-20th centuries.

Description
Quarto, 2 pages, in very good, clean and legible condition. "Sir, My young Friend, Benjamin Cowell Jr. of Providence, R.I. is solicitous for an appointment in the S.S.E. [South Seas Exploring] Expedition. His Father. Judge Cowell informs me that his son is well acquainted with Natural History so far as it relates to Ornithology. Indeed I have in my possession a Specimen of his ingenuity and taste in this pursuit. He is a member of the N.E. [New England] Society of Natural History and as Assistant to the Professor of Natural History might make himself useful and possessing a happy equanimity of temper, he would not fail to render himself a very agreeable fellow Passenger." The irony of his letter is that the recipient, Andrew Jackson's Navy Secretary, had been the inveterate opponent of the plan, stalled for nearly ten years, to send a Naval expedition to explore the islands of the Pacific. Dickerson stalled so long in issuing sailing orders for the Expedition that in November 1837, six months after Governor Francis wrote this letter, the Commodore originally slated to command the flotilla, resigned. Not until President Martin Van Buren came into office the following year that in August 1838 the Expedition, soon to go down in American scientific history, finally set sail, commanded by Charles Wilkes, a mere Navy Lieutenant, accompanied by several officers with real scientific knowledge who resented his authority. It was typical of the earlier problems that beset the project that Francis thought a young man whose only claim to fame was being the son of a US District Court Judge might "make himself useful" on the Expedition. In fact, 19-year-old Benjamin Cowell, Jr., bird lover though might be, never put his Ornithological passions to professional use, though he did take several long sea voyages – as a 49er to California early in the Gold Rush, where he found his cousins (later notable benefactors of the University of California) getting rich in the Limestone business. On a later trip to San Francisco, the steamer on which Cowell was travelling was shipwrecked off the California coast. Maybe that was enough adventure for the Judge's son. He soon settled down in Peoria, Illinois, where he established a Homeopathic Pharmacy and remained for the rest of his life as a prosperous merchant.

Very Good or better. First called Elite, Es-Ka Bicycles was founded in Cheb, Czechoslovakia in 1911 by Ambros Swetlik and Heinrich Kastrup. Though Es-Ka established Cheb a hub for bicycle manufacturing in the early twentieth century, the company halted production in 1941 when the city was seized by the German army. Cheb’s population remained overwhelmingly German until the end of World War II, when Czech resistance groups led a nationwide effort to expel ethnic Germans.
