Description
01/01/1425. A 15th century Italian manuscript showing the proliferation in the period in Italy and also the re-use that allowed them to survive These surviving leaves include portions on the need to follow Nature’s guidance and on the roles of Fortune and Nature in determining a man’s calling, as well as on the duties of the elder members of society and the need to follow the best among themDe Officiis (On Duties, On Obligations, or On Moral Responsibilities) is a 44 BC treatise by Marcus Tullius Cicero divided into three books, in which Cicero expounds his conception of the best way to live, behave, and observe moral obligations. The work discusses what is honorable (Book I), what is to one's advantage (Book II), and what to do when the honorable and private gain apparently conflict (Book III).The work's legacy is profound. Although not a Christian work, in 390 St. Ambrose declared it legitimate for the Church to use. It became a moral authority during the Middle Ages. Of the Church Fathers, St. Augustine, St. Jerome and even more so St. Thomas Aquinas, are known to have been familiar with it. Petrarch, the father of humanism and a leader in the revival of Classical learning, championed Cicero. Several of his works build upon the precepts of De Officiis.Following the invention of the printing press, De Officiis was the third book to be printed—third only to the Gutenberg Bible and Donatus's Ars Minor, which was the first printed book. The present documents: What survives includes portions of Book I, chs. 100-104 (on the need to follow Nature’s guidance, but control human appetites) and 120-126 (on the roles of Fortune and Nature in determining a man’s calling, and on the duties of the elder members of society and the need to follow the best among them as examples).Cicero, De Officiis, bifolium from a humanist manuscript, in Latin, on vellum [Italy, likely early fifteenth century]. Two conjoined leaves, each with a single column of 36 lines in a good semi-humanist script, paraphs in red or dark blue, red rubrics (with instructions for rubricator in adjacent margin). It's fascinating re-use in a 1612 accounting ledger: reused as a later Italian vellum binding for a set of accounts dated ‘1612’. You can see the exact dimensions of its re-use, with edges turned in, corners molded, and minor scuffs and stains (affecting pages on outermost sides of later binding the most, the innermost pages quite clean), overall fair and legible condition with wide and clean margins, each leaf 267 by 190mm.

1962. First Edition. Signed. STRAVINSKY, Igor. CRAFT, Robert. Expositions and Developments. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, 1962. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2500.First edition, warmly inscribed on the half title to neighbor and longtime friend Miranda Levy, ""To my dear Miranda, with love and kisses from I Stravinsky, Nov /63.""""Few 20th-century composers enjoyed international influence and importance equal to that of Stravinsky. This influence exists in the materials of his music and in his rigorous search for an individual sound… For many years he was, with Schoenberg, one of the two unofficial poles of Western music"" (ANB). In these conversations with his protégé, conductor Robert Craft (who coauthored seven books with him), Stravinsky discusses his childhood in St. Petersburg, Russia; recalls such musical luminaries as Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov; reflects on the intersection of music and modern recording technology; and discusses scores including The Firebird, The Rite of Spring and his then-new work, The Flood. Illustrated with eight pages of black-and-white photographs. Inscribed to Miranda Levy, a founding member of the Santa Fe Opera and wife of pioneering television director Ralph Levy (whose credits include directing the original I Love Lucy pilot episode). Miranda ""met Stravinsky at the Aspen, Colorado Music Festival in 1950, then hosted him on a New Mexico visit… [When] the composer let it be known he was interested in D.H. Lawrence… [Miranda] introduced Stravinsky to Lawrence's widow… [Miranda and Ralph Levy] moved to Los Angeles and bought a house less than a block from Stravinsky's… Just as she had once kept Santa Feans up to date on the latest news and gossip, she now regaled Igor and Vera Stravinsky with daily updates on movie studio gossip"" (Albuquerque Journal).Dust jacket with light rubbing to spine ends and edges. A very nearly fine inscribed presentation/association copy.

Description
[N.d., but Paris]: Le Breton, 1910. Very good.. Hand-colored lithograph. Image area: 9.75 x 14.25 inches, overall sheet size: 14 x 19.5 inches. Mounted to later board. Small bump to lower left edge, some chipping to bottom edge, paper remnants along top edge and some marginal discoloration from previous matting. A striking waterfront view of Gold Rush-era Sacramento, depicting an energetic and developing township recently flooded with emigrants from around the United States and the world. The image shows the Old Sacramento Waterfront from the Sacramento River towards the city, down J Street. The busy commercial waterfront district is populated with dozens of people moving about the town, as well as numerous houses, identified businesses (City Hotel, Eagle Theatre, Eldorado Exchange, Fremont House, General Jackson's Hotel, J.B. Starr & Company, and others), tents (one identified as Hot Cake and Coffee), and wagons. The bank of the shore also shows stacks of building materials and cargo. Several vessels are pictured on the river, including sailing ships, a sidewheel steamship, and rowboats. Interestingly, one of the larger sailing ships sports the flag of a Chilean sailing ship. The view was produced just before the railroads came to Sacramento later in the 1850s. It was prepared by the French painter, draughtsman, and lithographer Louis Le Breton (1818-1866). Before largely committing to lithography in 1849, Le Breton concentrated much of his painting on nautical scenes, as he spent much of his early career as a shipboard surgeon. The dating of the present lithograph is difficult, as examples were produced for several decades in the 19th century and into the first two decades of the 20th century without distinction between the various editions. Interestingly, Le Breton is also credited on a larger print of the present view, titled Ville de Sacramento and dated 1851, which is held by the Bancroft Library. With regard to the present example, we could locate no institutional copies. A stunning display piece of the capital city of California at an early time of explosive growth and development.
