Description
Rome: Vitale Mascardi, 1661. First edition. Small octavo (6 1/2 x 4 1/16 inches; 164 x 103 mm). [viii], 103, [1, blank] pp., one fold-out plate. Roman and italic type. Woodcut initials, head- tailpieces. Late nineteenth century full vellum, spine lettered in manuscript. Slight burn mark affecting 1/4 x 1/2 inch of top blank margin of last three leaves of text and rear endleaves (not affecting any text). Later endpapers with original marbled endpapers bound in. Housed in a fleece-lined half black morocco clamshell case. An excellent copy of one of the rarest of all works in first edition by Kircher, Diatribe de Prodigiosis Crucibus "attempts to explain the uncanny appearance of crosses on clothing and other objects immediately after an eruption of Vesuvius in 1660. He begins by discussing the history of similar appearances and the nature of miracles in general. God, he says, works by natural means, and miracles can therefore be explained rationally...Nevertheless, he argues, the crosses are a portent from God warning the people to repent. This approach is an excellent illustration of Kircher's position between the two worlds of the seventeenth century, the scientific and the orthodox" (Merrill). "During 1661 [this work] ... brought a refreshingly rational approach to a problem worrying the people of Naples. ...In this Diatribe de prodigiosis crucibus Kircher proved that the suspected indication of heavenly wrath was little more than the presence in the air around Vesuvius-dominated Naples of minute specks of volcanic ash, settling on the texture of woven cloth" (Fletcher). Kircher: Merrill 16. Brunet III, 67. Graesse IV, 21. Sommervogel IV, 1059.18. Clendening 9.12.

Very Good+ in Very Good dj
Description
New York: Ives Washburn, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1957. First American Edition. Hardcover. [spine slightly turned, a little wear to top and bottom edges of covers, age-toning and minor soiling to edges of text block; jacket slightly chipped (with old small internal tape repairs) at spine ends (no impact on text), faint (almost invisible) vertical crease in spine, light soiling to rear panel, a couple of tiny nicks in bottom edge of rear panel]. Yep, it's the book from which Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO -- anointed The Greatest Film of All Time by the British Film Institute's "Sight and Sound" panelists' poll -- was (rather freely) adapted. It's a must-have if you're a "books into film" collector, and considerably scarcer for some reason in the American edition than in the British, which preceded it by a year -- although if you're into that "true first edition" business, you really ought to be on the lookout for the French paperback original (Denoël, 1954) entitled "D'entre les morts," literally "From the Dead." (And if you think this one's expensive, prepare yourself for serious sticker shock if you happen to find that one.) .

Description
[N.p., n.d.]. Good.. [7]pp. Original pictorial self wrappers with photographic portrait on front cover. First and last leaves detached, moderate wear and rubbing, light soiling, pencil annotations covering last blank page. A rare music score for a "Negro spiritual" arranged by noted African-American composer Lucie E. Campbell. The song is "Tramping - Wanna Be Ready - Walk Children," and is arranged over six pages here. A wonderful portrait of Campbell appears on the front cover of the present work. The Memphis Music Hall of Fame describes Lucie Campbell as follows: "One of the most regarded composers of African American religious song, Lucie E. Campbell was a pioneering figure linking traditional hymnody to modern gospel composition and bridging gender and racial divides in the world of gospel music. Alongside such musical peers as Thomas A. Dorsey, Roberta Martin, and fellow Memphian Reverend W. Herbert Brewster, she helped to forge the black gospel sound of the first half of the twentieth century and further belongs to a small coterie of composers who have set lasting standards for religious music in the black Baptist church." Campbell was also notable as an activist for social justice. She headed the Negro Education Association, working for pay equity and other benefits for African American teachers. She also defied Jim Crow laws, refusing to give up her seat in a segregated streetcar in 1945, a decade before Rosa Parks. A detailed biography of her is included in the Tennessee Encyclopedia. OCLC records just a single copy of this work, at the University of Alabama.

Description
New Castle, DE: Oak Knoll Press, 2015. Hardcover, dust jacket. 8.5 x 11 inches. Hardcover, dust jacket. 272 pp text plus 72 pp b/w images (repeated in color on CD). "A marvelously comprehensive bibliography of Jeffers that reads like a detective novel and makes me want to peek into every item mentioned and immerse myself in his poetry." - Charles Simic From the mid-1920s through the early 1930s, Robinson Jeffers was ranked by many critics as one of Americas most important living poets. By the end of the 1930s, however, he was widely thought to have little new to say, and his reputation and readership declined. His anger at mankinds careless destruction of natural resources and his indifference to World War II further reduced his following. In recent decades, Jeffers has been rediscovered as an early critic of the 20th centurys offenses against the natural world, and academics and critics again recognize the depth and complexity of his work. In light of this resurgence, it has long frustrated scholars and collectors that no one had carried forward S.S. Alberts's 1933 A Bibliography of the Works of Robinson Jeffers. That work provides invaluable material on Jeffers's early work and most productive period, but leaves undocumented his output during his remaining 30 years and since his death in 1962, including books, pamphlets, and broadsides issued by such important small presses as those of Ward Ritchie, the Grabhorns, and William Everson. His Place for Story both revisits the years covered by Alberts (correcting errors) and adds full descriptive entries for all known separate Jeffers publications and for selected other publications with Jeffers contributions. Dana Gioia, a poet and critic and former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, provides a preface and Tim Hunt, editor of The Collected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers, an afterword. Extensive appendices supply additional information on appearances of Jeffers's poetry and prose. Illustrating the text are over 400 images of book covers, jackets, broadsides, and other items, in greyscale in the printed volume and in color on an accompanying CD. This is a guide to Jeffers's work that libraries, researchers, and collectors will find indispensible. Michael Broomfield has what is likely the most extensive private collection of Jeffers books and broadsides. This is his second book, following a John Updike bibliography co-authored with Jack De Bellis and published by Oak Knoll in 2007.
