Description
Oxford: Oxford Univ. Exploration Club by the Oxford University Press, 1925 & 1929. First Editions.. Original publisher's blue cloth with period press-mark at the base of the spine.. Very good. This is the OUP's own copy of record. It has a call number on the spine that was the house location number.. Royal 8vo; I - xi, [1 - blank] + 33 individual offprints from various journals (includes the Appendix); II - xi, [1 - blank] + 25 individual offprints from various journals (includes the Appendix). The OUP printed the title, preface, and then bound up the offprints as the "text" - the OUP purchased a number of copies of each of the offprints that make up the text. It is doubtful if more than 100 copies were produced. The reports of all three expeditions. Originally planned as a trip to study the bird life of the island it was soon enlarged to include an exploration of the interior. The original number of participants was 18 under the leadership of F C R Jourdain and was funded by subscription. A return trip occurred in 1922 by three of the original participants. This led to the organization of a second expedition in 1923, under the leadership fo F G Binney, devoted to exploration and a final expedition under Binney in 1924. Though Spitsbergen was a relatively well known area of the Arctic the interior had scarcely been seen. The goal of the expedition was a study of the "ecology" of the environment - something that was new. The Oxford University Expedition Club made small number of such trips to remote parts of the world prior to WWII issuing similar scientific reports.
