Illustrated with woodcut vignettes in the text, and with [6] folded leaves of plates; lacking part of plate no. 1, after the first fold. Bitting notes the "plates are not usually present until the 9th edition and those that follow" (page 438). Other titles: Accomplished Gentlewoman's Companion; Compleat Housewife. FIRST EDITION. An important cookbook. "After Hannah Glasse and, perhaps, Elizabeth Raffald, Eliza Smith is one of the best known of 18th Century cookery writers...' (Maclean page 134). Originally published in 1727, The Compleat Housewife was issued in many editions; in 1742 it became the first cookbook printed in what was to be the United States, fifty-four years before the first cookbook compiled and published in the U.S., Amelia Simmons' American Cookery (Hartford, 1796). The author was a cook or housekeeper, and the recipes were drawn largely from her private recipe manuscripts, the tradition to date, though one which was waning as more cookbooks were compiled with recipes borrowed from other books. The medicinal recipes were included largely to help less fortunate neighbors, as the members of the household would have a doctor (Lehman, The British Housewife). During the author's lifetime her name appeared only as "E_ S_", expanding to "E. Smith" in the fifth edition, but never appeared fully as "Eliza Smith". Lehman concurs with Genevieve Yost that there is no evidence for the author's first name being Eliza (Lehman, page 450-51). ~ Lacking part of the first plate as noted above; otherwise folding plates are clean and sound. A few small pencil annotations to text. Rebound in red calf, using original, gilt-paneled boards; new hinges and gilt-titled and -decorated spine panel. Generally near very good. Rare; not one copy of the first edition sold at auction in the last fifty years (RareBookHub). [OCLC locates six copies of the first edition; Bitting, page 438 (but only for the fourth edition of 1730; Maclean, page 134].

Oblong 4to, 180 x 276 mm., bound in original cloth with lettering and decoration on the front cover. Tbilisi: Zaria Vostoka, 1941. This album showcases toys and educational materials for kindergarten children produced by the Georgian scientific-research institute, and provides a unique insight into Soviet pedagogy. The work is particularly important as it promoted the toys which later became mainstream. The album is divided into four parts: "Educational Toys" (20 ill.), "Construction Toys" (6 ill.), "Folk Toys" (4 ill.) based on the famous Georgian folk tales, and "Outdoor Toys" (5 ill.). Each article is supplemented with the illustrations giving a valuable insight into the process of learning in Soviet Georgian kindergartens. The photos date back to the late 1930s. The album features 4 colored illustrations of the educational toys, "Triala", "Seqtorina", and "Tsibruti", as well as 11 black and white photographs depicting teachers using preschooler toys produced by the institute and kids playing games. As stated in the introduction, the edition was intended to provide kindergarten teachers with precise information on the use policy for toys, give assistance in defining pedagogical purposes of games, and represent achievements of the laboratory so that toy manufacturing companies could start the mass production. The album decoration is designed by the artist T. Kechkhoashvili. Some minor marginal stains, but overall in excellent condition. Not listed in OCLC. Scarce. One of 800 copies.

A member of Parliament and leading member of the Evangelical Party of the Church of England, Wilberforce led the movement to abolish slavery. Ours is the first American edition. It first issued from London in 1797. The book became the manifesto of the Evangelical Party, emphasizing the importance of working for social justice. Wilberforce delivers a strong reproof of Christianity as practiced for its failure to abide by the true religion of love and human equality. The editors of "Representative Men of the South" (writing in 1880) state that: "[Bagby's] lecture on 'The Virginia Negro, Past and Present,' was prepared for the North, where he delivered it; but, the general subject being in that section considerably less popular in the lecture-hall than on the hustings, he failed sufficiently to interes his audience, and consequently soon laid the lecture aside. The truth is, the negro, although he once lent himself easily to the purposes of literary art, and no doubt will thus lend himself again, is just at present the subject of quite too little illusion, standing out as a naked fact, uncovered by so much as a shred of romance or a fig-leaf of picturesqueness. A better time undoubtedly is coming for this lecture, and when it comes may the gifted lecturer be here to improve it." (p. 430). Bagby was vitriolic in his assessment of New Englanders, writing: "The Yankee is not in any sense a person. He is a chattel of the worst possible master -- a machine. He is a bad version of Frankenstein [...] a wiper and cleaner of the dirty structure made by his own hands" (Selections of the Miscellaneous Writings, 1884, vol. 1, p. 183). Very scarce broadside. The date of publication is conjectured from text in the broadside itself ("Opinions of the Press"). Four copies are located by Worldcat: UMich (Clements), UVa, Virginia Historical, and Univ.
