Oblong folio (15 by 13 inches), original half red morocco, gilt-decorated red cloth, accordion-fold (leporello) panorama of ten vintage albumen prints (each measures 10-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches, for a total panoramic view of 8-3/4 feet); mounted on card stock, with cloth hinges. $3500.Rare exceptionally large photographic panorama of Constantinople from 1882, by Constantine J. Fettel, with ten mounted vintage albumen prints linked together to offer a wonderful accordion-fold panoramic image of the city spanning nearly nine feet in length—an exceptional view of majestic mosques, churches and palaces—in original gilt-stamped cloth binding. This splendid gilt-stamped Panorama album of Constantinople contains an exquisite accordion-fold panoramic view of the city, dated 1882 on the rear board. Created by the Mideast studio of Constantine J. Fettel, the album displays ten vintage albumen prints, each mounted on card stock and hinged with cloth to create a panorama 8-3/4 feet in length, offering an exquisite view of Constantinople's majestic palaces, mosques and churches, along with the rich splendor of Byzantine architecture. Photographic albums and panoramas such as this one supplied ""evocative imagery to the increasing number of people who undertook the Victorian Grand Tour"" (Hannavy, Encyclopedia of 19th-Century Photography I: 1730-4) and captivated a world newly spellbound ""by photography's capacity to 'take them there,' and bring them directly in contact with the long ago and far away"" (Parr & Badger I:18). A bit of toning to the mounts only; light rubbing and darkening to cloth, gilt bright. Albumen prints in excellent condition. A near-fine copy of this splendid and large panorama.

Description
New York: Doubleday and Company, 1981. First Edition. 406pp. Duodecimo [21.5 cm] 1/2 maroon cloth over tan boards. Very good/Near fine. Closed tear to foot of jacket's cover. Warmly inscribed on the front free endsheet: "To Ila, To do wonderful, courageous, and outrageous things for women all the days of your life. Your sister, Sonia Johnson." Sonia Johnson (born 1936), who was a member of the LDS Church from birth, began speaking out in support of the ERA in 1977. National exposure occurred with her 1978 testimony in front of the U. S. Senate's Constitutional Rights Subcommittee, and she continued speaking and promoting the ERA and denouncing what she perceived to be her church's political activities against the amendment. After a well-publicized church trial in December 1979, Johnson was excommunicated. Afterwards, she continued promoting the ERA as president of the Mormons for ERA group. She spoke at numerous functions throughout the country and appeared on a number of television talk shows. "Sonia Johnson's roots in the Mormon church went back five generations. She'd been married for twenty years, was a dedicated homemaker and the mother of four children. Then, suddenly, her life began to come apart. Awakening feminism brought her into conflict with the church fathers, who, finding her guilty of promoting false doctrine, excommunicated her. Her husband wanted a divorce, because he was, he said, 'tired of working on our marriage." Sonia Johnson was shattered. But she has prevailed. Sonia Johnson is now a heroine of the Equal Right movement." - blurb from jacket.

Near Fine in Very Good dj
Description
New York: Hawthorn Books, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1976). First Edition. Hardcover. [no significant wear to book, just a touch of fading to covers along the bottom edges; the jacket has a few tiny edge-tears and some associated wrinkling/creasing at the bottom edge of the front panel]. (B&W photographs) A history of ragtime, "from its inception through its colorful evolution," one of the first to be published after the "rediscovery" of this musical form and its most noted practicioner, Scott Joplin, after his music was used for the soundtrack of the hit movie THE STING in 1973. The author, a highly-regarded musician himself, discusses Joplin at some length, then "goes on to depict the exciting and often bawdy settings of the music: the earthy minstrel shows, the whorehouses, the cold and commercial publishing houses of New York's Tin Pan Alley, the traditional jazz emporiums of Dixieland, and finally the prestigious concert halls of the world." The Foreword is by Eubie Blake, one of ragtime's greats, who thankfully lived long enough (until 1983, when he died at the age of 96) to experience the attention and acclaim that came his way late in life. (This was apparently a review copy, as it has the original publisher's press release laid in at the front.) .
