Description
ALBERT SIDNEY JOHNSTON (1803-1862). Johnston was an American Army officer who fought in the Texas War of Independence, the Mexican War, and the Utah War. When the Civil War broke out, Jefferson Davis thought very highly of Johnston and appointed him a full general. He was killed at Shiloh and became the highest-ranking officer to die during the Civil War.AL. 8 x 10. 2pg. May 11, 1859. Camp Floyd, Utah. An autograph letter signed J to his wife Eliza. Johnston wrote from Utah, where he was stationed in the Utah War: My dear wife I have received your letter of April 3d. I am glad to know that you and our dear little ones are all well. Your criticism of the Photograph is quite correct, and will continue to be so, until the process is sufficiently rapid to catch some familiar impressions, when the subject or sitter is unconscious of his likeness being taken or measurably so; while his attention is devoted to keeping still & his head is placed between the legs of a pair [of] calipers for that purpose, there will be no recognized impression of the countenance & only such as one as the novelty of his or her position may impress, especially if the Photographer, so now assumes a pleasing impression. For any other purpose in they uses of pictures than obtaining the human face divine, the act is priceless. Its insufficiency in that respect makes it necessary that we shall still depend upon that genius, which can catch familiar impressions. Although evanescent, and transfer them to the Canvas, the countenance cannot or with honest folks does not conceal the emotions after the mind or heart, they are possibly the same thing, the impression I wear in looking upon you, is faithfully interpreted by you. I am unconscious what it is I could not simulate it, if I would, of course, it could not be enhanced by putting my head between the legs of calipers in front of a lens, with the Photographer looking at me with the pleasing anticipation of a successful result. It can be only reproduced or brought to life when I look at you. You are the source of its existence, its life and I feel sure that it will always life and have its being in your presence. A train for Salt Lake City from Los Angeles passed through camp a few days since. Your Brother was well and although he neglects to write her remembered to send me a barrel. I send my love to all and above all to Sid & Clung & Griffin If I can send you three moreskins I will they will make a large cape, muff & bands & perhaps a cape + bands for Maggy. J. He then added a postscript of I sent payable to your order my pay account for April by last mail please acknowledge receipt. At the top of the first page, he wrote Mrs. E.G. Johnston Louisville Kentucky. The letter has mailing folds and cross writing on the first page. The second page has less staining than the first page. Johnston is scarce to rare in fully handwritten letters.

ALS. (1786-1857). Marcy was a New York Governor and Senator, and Secretary of War during the Mexican War. ALS. 1pg. 7 " x 9 ". Novr 24th 1846. Philada. An autograph letter signed "Thos Oliver Goldsmith M.D." two times to Secretary of War William Marcy. After the start of the Mexican War, Goldsmith appeals to be sent to Mexico: "As a Regt of Volunteers is called from Pennsylvania, and as many of my friends will be in said Regt, I desire the appointment of Surgeon for Regt. I do not know whether the Col will appoint or the appointment reserved by the War office. In either case I would most anxiously be a candidate for the post. I can produce the best of qualifications as to character and capability (references to Drs. McClellan and Wm. C.C. Barton of Philada). I would state I have lived in the S. West of Louisiana on the lakes, a country similar to Mexico. I know its Geography climate and the nature of its diseases and if such an appointment could be made by you, you will confer a favor... I am a graduate of Medicine and have been practicing Medicine for 14 years, a part of the time in Louisiana near Texas, the balance in Kensington Phila Co Pa." The letter has the usual mailing folds with two toning bands on the integral address leaf

Description
London: Henry Sotheran, 1895. First edition. First trade edition. Folio (15 1/8 x 11 5/8 in; 384 x 296 mm). x, 236 pp.Bound c. 1949 in half crimson morocco over pale red cloth ruled in gilt. Spine with six raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Marbled endpaperes, top edge gilt, others uncut. Engravings exhibit light spotting to margins. A very small rub spot to lower board. Otherwise a fine copy. Thirteen uncolored electro-engravings with tissue guards, including frontispiece, twelve full-page black and white plates, 125 black and white text illustrations. Housed in a cloth slipcase. John Guille Millais (1865-1931) was an English artist, naturalist, gardener and travel writer who specialized in wildlife and flower portraiture. He traveled extensively around the world in the late Victorian period detailing wildlife often for the first time. His was clearly a wanderlust based on a desire to see, record and paint the natural world. To this end he traveled widely in Europe, Africa and North America. A Breath of the Veldt, based upon his trip to South Africa, was his second of seventeen books on his travels and the wildlife of the places he journeyed through. It is quite likely that Millias influenced Rider Haggard's Alan Quarterman novels. Millais was was the friend and biographer of F.C. Selous, the big-game hunter that Haggard based Quartermain upon, and his descriptions of the Veldt, in which Haggard set so much of his fiction, were most certainly read and referenced by Haggard. "Never before, or elsewhere, have the winged and furred creatures of the wild lived in their lithe beauty and fantastic grace as in these delicate drawings" (Mendelssohn).

Description
1917. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1917. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jacket. First American Edition, published about a month after Dent's London edition, of one of Conrad's most autobiographical tales. To quote from the dust jacket, The "shadow line" is that dim boundary that divides youth from maturity. How a young first mate, who unexpectedly finds himself in command of a sailing vessel, leaves his carefree youth behind forever in the agonizing responsibility of a twenty-one day voyage from Bankok [sic] to Singapore. His ship is becalmed, the whole crew stricken with fever and no quinine in the medicine chest! The American edition was set from proof sheets supplied by Dent, after which Conrad made changes that were effected in the UK edition but not in the US one; as a result, "the American edition provides an interesting intermediate text between the English Review [appearance] and the first Dent edition, showing the extensive changes made from serial to copy text for the book, as well as the further polishing which took place in proof" [Cagle]. This volume is in just-about-fine condition (a trace of rubbing at the corners). Included is the scarce 1917 dust jacket, which is scarcer than the Dent dust jacket; American jackets reading "Doubleday Doran" on their spines are from later printings after 1927. The jacket is in good-to-very good condition (separated at the rear hinge and partly along the front flap, slightly chipped at the spine ends, dampstain at the lower edge). Supino A20.4.0; Cagle A21b.1.

Hand colored etching. Very good
Description
S W Fores, 1802. Loose_leaf. Hand colored etching. Very good. Williams, Charles. A waggish sense of humor is presented here in this etching. A massive butcher presides in front of his stall, pointing out the benefits of a gargantuan joint of beef. His clientele, dressed in ostentatious costume look on as he points of the merits of his wares: "There is not such dignified Beef in the Market - believe me Right Honorable every Inch of it; Coronets marked in the fat and Genealogy in the lean - had it pon Honor - from my Lord cram Bullock, - delicious! - you may smell the Oil Cake a mile - no vulgar ingredients - only half a Crown per pound - a mere trifle - I have indeed some low bred beef at Sixpence but I am sue Sir it would not suit your refined Taste." The gentleman answers: "Why look ye - Master Suet as I am not over ambitious, if you please - I'll have a slice of the Citizen." His wife adds: "Husband dont be so Wulgar I say send home a Sir Loin of true Nobility." Light foxing, small close tear to top edge. Past crease marks visible.
