Description
1908. First Edition. GRAHAME, Kenneth. The Wind in the Willows. London: Methuen, (1908). Octavo, modern full green morocco gilt, gilt vignette of Mole, Toad, and Rat on front cover, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; original cloth bound in at rear. $5200.First edition of the beloved children's novel, ""one of the classic read-aloud books that should not be missed by any family"" (Silvey), handsomely bound by Asprey.""Unquestionable is the permanence, as an inspired and characteristically English contribution to children's literature, of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows… one of the most endearing books ever written for children… Part of the secret success of the book is that its appeal is ageless and parents never tire of reading it aloud. Like all great books it is inexhaustible"" (Eyre, 62). Grahame created his classic as a series of bedtime stories for his four-year-old son, Alastair, who was known as Mouse; yet it also became ""in many respects an elegy for the old idyllic English rural life which Grahame could now see was passing away forever"" (Carpenter & Prichard, 218). In a letter to Theodore Roosevelt, Grahame described the book as ""an expression of the very simplest of joys of life as lived by the simplest beings."" C.S. Lewis praised it as ""a perfect example of the kind of story which can express things without explaining them"" (Carpenter, 168). Pierpont Morgan Children's Literature 269. Scattered foxing, a few instances of very faint marginal dampstaining; mild toning to spine. A lovely copy.

Description
1929. First Edition. Signed. GOLD, Mike. 120 Million. New York: International, (1929). Octavo, original black cloth. $1650.First edition of the first book by controversial radical Mike Gold, published at the cusp of the Great Depression, an outstanding presentation/association copy inscribed by him to influential New York publisher and editor, Albert ""Pete,"" Gross, inscribed by Gold along an entire page, ""To Pete Gross—Lion Tamer, Father, Author's Friend, New Yorker, Book Maker, Philosopher, Gin Drinker and Puritan, from a fellow bum Mike Gold,"" featuring 20 early passionate writings by Gold on Black Americans, the I.W.W., immigrants, miners, strikers and more.Born Itzok Isaac Granich, Jewish American Mike Gold was a ""radical's radical.. born to poverty, reared in poverty and educated by poverty"" (Folsom, Education of Mike Gold, 224). A founding co-editor of New Masses in 1926 before becoming its sole editor, Gold made a major impact that was early and unusually noted by Time magazine, which declared: ""40 times he has been chased by cops for taking part in street demonstrations; 20 strikes have had his help."" Confrontational and controversial, Gold was at the forefront of an emerging literary tradition that launched works by Richard Wright, Tillie Olsen, Henry Roth, John Fante, H.T. Tsiang, Claude McKay and many more. His own writings were pivotal in arguing for art as a ""class weapon"" (Rideout, Radical Novel, 165)—works that helped launch a movement ""nurtured by the cultural politics of the left,"" the impact of racism, poverty and the rise of fascism, and fiction that was also, often, propelled by the ""heroes, plots and language of pulp fiction."" To Lionel Trilling, ""the importance of the radical movement… cannot be overestimated. It may be said to have created the American intellectual class as we now know it"" (Denning, Cultural Front, 240, 3). The 20 works in 120 Million, his first book, includes Gold's writings on Black Americans, immigrants, the I.W.W. and strikers and miners, along with short fiction, dramatic prose and select poems. First edition, first printing: with ""Copyright, 1929, by International Publishers Co., Inc/""; no statement of edition or printings. Without very elusive dust jacket. Hanna 1443. The recipient, Albert ""Pete"" Gross, was a highly influential publisher and editor who co-founded International Publishers in 1924 before becoming am editor at Boni & Liverright in 1924. Text very fresh, faint edge-wear to spine ends of original cloth. An impressive about-fine inscribed copy.

Description
London [May 1864-November 1865]: Chapman & Hall. First Edition. Original Wraps. In the original monthly parts, 20 parts in 19. Original green printed wrappers; ALL wrappers are correct. ALL the ads, slips and Advertisers called for by Hatton & Cleaver are present, except for the rare ad "The Economic Life Assurance Society" following the plates in parts 14 and 19/20 and "The Churchman's Family Magazine" in part 1. FIRST ISSUE of the wrappers, without the imprint at the foot of front wrapper of part 1, and with the first issue text, with the misspelling "pricipal" in part 14, page 115, line 38. Part 10 with the text UNOPENED. The plates are very good to fine; tissue guards are in place. Light soiling to some wrappers. Some spines are expertly renewed. Small corner repair to front wrapper of parts 3, 4 and 6; small corner repair to rear wrap of part 19/20 and loss at edges. Neat owner name on front wrapper of part 18. Our Mutual Friend has more of the Advertiser ads than any of Dickens' other works, having 320 pages and 89 insets and slips in the rear of the parts. Altogether a very good set, lacking just two (scarce) ads and having the first issue points in the wrappers and text. Handsomely presented, and it has a pedigree - it is from the famed (Thomas) Hatton & Cleaver (bibliographers) collection. Housed in a (green faded to brown) full leather, turn-of-the-century pull-off-top slipcase, with chemise. Provenance: The Hatton & Cleaver Collection, The Heritage Bookshop, Charles Parkhurst Rare Books.

Description
1905. With Illustrations in Photogravure by S.H. Sime. London: Elkin Mathews, 1905. Original light brown paper-covered boards pictorially decorated in dark brown, with tan burlap spine lettered in black. First Edition of this Anglo-Irish fantasy writer's first book. These tales take place in the mythological world of Pegana, which Dunsany himself created -- right from the beginning illustrated with the amazing mystical images of Sidney Sime. Dunsany had to pay for the publication of this book, then earning a commission on each copy sold; its success made it so that he did not have to employ this arrangement again. Critics label this as one of the foundational books of the modern fantasy genre. This is a near-fine copy (front endpaper cracked else fine) -- remarkable because its binding is of paper-covered boards. Loosely inserted is the clipped autograph signature of Sidney H. Sime. Currey p. 170; Bleiler 573 ("Written in a heavily rhythmical style, with obvious relationship to the King James Bible; in ideology, often close to Hinduism... as a whole THE GODS OF PEGANA is a convincing, marvelous creation of an alien cosmology").

Paris, 1877. [Telephone.] (1) Le telegraphe parlant. In La Nature: Revue des sciences 5, no. 198 (17 March 1877): 251; no. 201 (7 April 1877): 289-91; and 203 (21 April 1877): 328-330. (2) Le telephone de M. Gray. In ibid., no. 212 (23 June 1877): 59-62. Together 4 whole numbers, 8vo. Wood-engraved illustrations. 301 x 205 mm. Original blue printed wrappers, tear in back wrapper of no. 203, fore-edges a bit frayed. Fine set. First Editions. Early illustrated French reports on the rival telephones of Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray. Bell developed his first successful electrical sound-transmission apparatus in 1875 and published his first announcement of it in 1876. Meanwhile Gray, the inventor of a system of "electro-harmonic telegraphy" for transmitting musical tones over a single wire, was considering the possibility of a device that could transmit speech by wire. The two inventors filed applications at the U.S. Patent office on the same day (Feb. 14, 1876), with Bell's application preceding Gray's by only a few hours. Gray's and Bell's patents were later the subject of a bitter infringement battle, which ended with the court's determination that the Bell telephone patents were valid.

Searchy, Arkansas: [Friends of George Wallace], 1972. Campaign Poster. Cardstock. Near fine. The George Wallace 1972 Campaign Poster: Prevent Forced Busing With Wallace on November 7th, published by the Friends of Wallace.. Broadside in black and red print, measures 17" x 11". Pencil note on verso, faint thumb mark along bottom edge of front panel, otherwise a fine example. The photograph illustrates a white girl waiting for a bus at South Side Elementary, with African American girls in the background. In the 1972 presidential campaign, Alabama Governor George Wallace (1919-1998) ran as a Democrat, positioning himself as a champion of Southern populism and a critic of the federal government's civil rights policies. His campaign gained significant traction in the South, winning him primaries in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and others. On May 15, 1972, Wallace was shot five times by Arthur Bremer during a campaign stop in Laurel, Maryland. The assassination attempt left Wallace paralyzed from the waist down, effectively ending his active pursuit of the presidency that year, though he remained a symbolic figure in American politics.

Warner Brothers. Softcover/Paperback. Fine. Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 2010. Vintage original film script, 11 x 8 1/2" (29 x 22 cm), brad bound, 139 pp., title labeled on spine. All pages watermarked and printed on blue paper, script designated as FULL BLUE, credited to Scott Z. Burns and dated July 21, 2010. Overall fine. Contagion is a medical thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh. Its ensemble cast includes Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, and Gwyneth Paltrow. The plot concerns the spread of a highly contagious virus transmitted through respiratory droplets and fomites, attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, the loss of social order as the virus turns into a worldwide pandemic, and the introduction of a vaccine to halt its spread. To follow several interacting plot lines, the film makes use of the multi-narrative "hyperlink cinema" style, popularized in several of Soderbergh's films. The film was inspired by real-life outbreaks such as the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak and the 2009 flu pandemic. (Wikipedia)
