Description
Tucson: Loujon Press, 1966. First edition. Fine/Very Good +. One of 26 copies in the "A to Z Leather Inscription Edition" inscribed by Henry Miller to the poet Jack Grapes (this being copy G). The inscribed copies were the most limited in a total edition of 1,524 (which also included 99 signed copies). Beautifully bound in half crimson morocco by the Schuberth Bookbindery in San Francisco. This is a lovely, quirky production designed, edited, and letterpress printed by Loujon Press editors Louisa and Jon Webb in Tucson, Arizona (on "Loujon's ancient 8 x 12 C&P Letterpress"). 87 pp., plus illustrations. A Fine copy in the Very Good+ dustjacket (some offsetting to inside of jacket and small tear to lower corner of back panel) and Fine publisher's slipcase with the Loujon Press prospectus (with a handwritten note from the press) and the original shipping box. "Written in 1937-38 in Paris, this book was penned without carbon & gifted as a long intimate book letter to the painter Hans Reichel who died 1958: now a Loujon Press 1524-copy first edition" (from the dust jacket). The work is here presented with an introduction by Lawrence Durrell and illustrations reproduced from Reichel's own work. Jack Grapes is a Los Angeles poet, publisher, and former editor of the poetry journal ONTHEBUS (1989-2017). Notably, his work appears, along with Henry Miller's, in The Outsider, the short-lived but influential literary journal published by the Loujon Press (1961-1969). Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Description
Paris: Chez Magimel, Libraire pour l’Art Militaire, 1814. Early Edition. Half Leather. Very Good binding. Volumes 1, 3 and 4 only of a five volume set. First published in 1797, this being a corrected early edition. A French manual on bastioned fortifications, both addressing the defense and attack thereof. Described by sir Henry Yule’s Fortification for Officers of the Army as “probably the best existing view of the whole subject [of military fortifications], as its clear and lively style renders it also one of the most readable books in the engineer’s library.” Bousmard fell as a Prussian Officer during the defense of Danzig in 1807, but his views on fortifications were followed by many prominent military engineers of the time. Usual, minor foxing and toning throughout, with slight dusty odor. Scuffing and wear to the leather binding. Half calf over marbled paper, with leather labels and gilt decorations. (Henry Yule Fortification for Officers of the Army and Students of Military History pp. 182-183 accessed 11/19/19). Very Good binding.

Description
LINCOLN'S FAVORITE ENGRAVER Octavo, two letters, two pages, folded, in very good, clean, and legible condition. "…I have just sent you two more impressions of the plate of Prof. Edmund Andrews. I think [none?] the plates should be satisfactory and if so please send the thirty dolls, for engraving it and very much oblige…Have you any suggestions to make in regard to Rev. Josiah Andrews M.S. which I propose to improve if possible and send a proof?...I have about finished the engraving of the Steel plate of your Son and if you will send me his Autograph I will engrave it on the plate and send you an impression by mail. I should have had it done before but from health prevented me from engraving all the time which has caused the delay,,," Pelton had begun his career as a banknote engraver in the 1830s. By the 1850s, he was engraving portraits of American notables, his most famous being an 1861 rendition of Gilbert Stuart's painting of George Washington. A framed copy hung in the Springfield, Illinois home of Abraham Lincoln while he was serving as President. Ironically, in 1865, Pelton produced an engraving of Lincoln's assassination. Pelton himself died in 1882. Edmund Andrews, whose portrait Pelton engraved in 1871, together with that of his father, a Congregational Minister – probably for an Andrews family genealogy - was a famous American Doctor, a pioneer in surgery who was a leader of medical education in the western United States. Oliver Pelton (1798-1882) Banknote and general engraver, born August 31, 1798, at Portland, Connecticut. He worked principally in Boston and died at East Hartford, Connecticut, August 15, 1882. With Terry, Pelton & Co. in 1836-37, Fielding, Supplement to Stauffer; Boston CD 1829-1856. Groce Wallace, Dictionary of Artists in America, p. 497

Blondie Bumstead, and her husband Dagwood, were created in 1930 and are alive at 92.  Their comic strip has appeared in 2,000 newspapers, in 47 countries, and in 35 languages, and it still appears daily.  They have starred in 28 films, 2 TV series, 2 TV specials, radio shows from 1939 to 1950, comic books since 1947, they’ve been merchandised hundreds of times, they got their own U. S. postage stamp in 1995, she’s had a dessert named after her (a Blondie is a Brownie made with vanilla instead of cocoa powder) and Blondie was the eponym of the Hall of Fame rock & roll band that was her namesake.   Ah booksellers.  Pop culture matters.  It is real, and demand for it is real, because it is market driven.

Description
Moving Parts Press for The Book Club of California, 2011. Limited Edition. No binding. Fine. Rice, Felicia. Number 12 of 75 copies, illustrated broadside, signed and numbered by artist Felicia Rice. The Book Club of California, one of the oldest book clubs in the U.S. for collectors and lovers of the printed book, is known for its fine printing of books on Californiana and Western Americana. To celebrate its 99th birthday, the Moving Parts Press printed this broadside which contains in excerpt from Frank Marryatt's "Mountains and Molehills". A Zamorano Eighty title, the first edition of the book, published in London, is highly collectible, having eight coloured lithographs which are considered among the finest of early California subjects. Frank Marryat (1826-1855) traveled in 1850 from England for California, taking the Panama route, accompanied by a manservant and three hunting dogs. Some excerpts of Marryatt's observations on life in San Francisco of the 1850s give us a hint that gastronomical delights at that time were closer to the source, so to speak, than they are today. He relates one story of going into an eating establishment for lunch, orders 'Fricasse de Lapin" but instead is served squirrel: "I knew it from experience I had had in the anatomy of that sagacious animal. It was very good, however, and if it had been a fat Sacramento rat, I daresay that, under the circumstances, I should not have turned my nose up at it; for I have eaten many things in my time...; and when a man has one dined off monkey soup and has ladled a human-looking head out of the pot and has eaten still, regardless of that piteous parboiled look, he can stomach any thing in reason after that." (N.B., quote from Malcolm Barker's "More San Francisco Memoirs, 1852-1899: The Ripening Years".) This broadside with a image of "a leash of hares" being roasted for dinner, a "leash" being one of several collective nouns for a group of rabbits. Printed for the 99th birthday of The Book Club of California, December 12, 2011. ___DESCRIPTION: Broadside measuring approximately 18" by 12", the image and type were reproduced using photopolymer plates, Garamond type, Japanese Kasuiri paper, numbered and signed in pencil ("F. Rice") by the artist at the bottom. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, clean and without wear; it has been rolled like a scroll and stored thus. ___POSTAGE: Note that since it has been rolled, it will be shipped that way, in a cardboard tube. International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Tan oil cloth covers. Very good
Description
Italy: Carlo Cassone, 1898. Hardcover. Tan oil cloth covers. Very good. 95 pages. 19 x 13 cm. Through most of the 19th century, sugar beet farming in Italy was more an agronomic curiosity and policy debate point - usually with small plots, trials, and various factory schemes. By the end of the century, sugar policy and factory construction had turned beet cultivation into a meaningful, regionally concentrated component of northern Italian agriculture, laying the groundwork for the 20th-century industry. Here, the author examines the best sugar beet varieties, best climate, sowing, storage, etc. Illustrated throughout. Endpapers filled with sugar beet advertisements. Previous owner's signature on title page and front cover. Pages lightly toned. Covers lightly soiled.

Brian Voll is producing beautiful booklets that guide the reader to an elegant but sustainable menu/dinner party. From the author: "Each booklet contains a set of recipes for a multi-course dinner that’s well-suited for a little dinner party. And with a plan to boot! But more than a collection of really tasty recipes, the aim is to minimize waste by using ingredients that might otherwise be scrapped: if lemon juice goes into one recipe then zest goes into another; egg white in one recipe means yolk in another. Homesteading meets haute cuisine, if you will." Menu #4 features: Applejack Cocktail, Harcha, Butternut Squash Soup, Green Salad, Duck Breast, Poached Pears. Each booklet includes a plan, a grocery list, and an entertaining story.
