Description
London: Edward Arnold, 1916. Third ("Popular") Edition. 189 x 125 mm. (7 1/2 x 5"). x, 11-128 pp. SUPERB DEEP BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, INLAID AND PAINTED TO A NAUTICAL DESIGN BY HENRY WOOD (stamp-signed on front turn-in), upper cover with gilt fillet border, interlacing rope frame of inlaid brown morocco entwined with inlaid green morocco foliage bearing gilt berries, central oval of cerulean blue morocco inlaid with an Elizabethan ship in full sail, the wooden ship done in brown, tan, and black morocco, the billowing white sails and flag bearing the red cross of St. George, the blue background morocco textured and painted to depict the waves of the sea, with inlaid white morocco foam where the ship cleaves its path through the ocean, lower cover with simple inlaid brown morocco rope frame, raised bands, spine compartments framed with brown morocco "rope" and inlaid with either foliage or an anchor, gilt lettering, turn-ins tooled with gilt rope frame, ivory watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. In the original fleece-lined clamshell case of blue three-quarter morocco over blue linen. Just the faintest hint of soiling on back cover, but essentially a pristine copy inside and out. This handsome pictorial binding is quite appropriate for a collection of five ballads on the valiant mariners of Elizabethan England. Binder Henry Wood worked as a finisher for Zaehnsdorf for 12 years, developing the expert technique on full display here. It is hard to decide which is more impressive--the delicacy of the pictorial inlay (the intricate details of the ship, the seafoam), or the remarkable texturing that gives the cover image such depth. In 1890, Wood went out on his own, purchasing the bindery operated by Simon Kaufmann and French émigré Lucien Roca. He continued to execute bindings to a high standard that ranked with the work of the better-known binderies like Sangorski & Sutcliffe, Riviere, and his former employer. Prideaux notes in "Modern Bookbindings" that he "greatly expanded" Kaufmann's business but never "sought the heavy expenses and responsibilities of a large undertaking," being, like his former co-worker at Zaehsndorf Roger de Coverly, "content with a personal business in which they themselves have always taken an active part." First published in 1897, "Ballads" is the best-known work of James Rennell Rodd, first Baron Rennell (1858-1941), an influential British diplomat who managed an impressive literary and scholarly output, despite the demands of a very successful career in the Foreign Service. This third edition was published at the height of the Great War; in the preface Rodd states: "The vision of the present is still too confused and bewildering for adequate expression. . . . But the chivalries of the sea and the test of high endurance are the same as in the days of our fathers, and while the island race endures, the spirit of Drake, who sleeps 'neath some great wave,' will never call to them in vain.".

Description
Iowa City: Windhover Press, 1982. First edition. Original quarter brown goatskin, fine, boxed as issued. One of 25 special signed copies, which include a postcard from Pound to the author, and a printed slip concerning Laughlin's donation of the post cards to the University of Iowa Foundation. The postcard, dated 6 June 1938, typed on both sides, with Pound's handwritten annotations, signed with initial, shows Pound's concern with the design of "Guide to Kulchur": "In absorbing KULCH/ I trust you will suppress St Simon Stylites wrapper and if possible ascertain WHO committed it. St J/ was served on a platter/ waaal mebbe the to is intended as a platter/ but the violation of ideogramic principles wd/ only confuse our compatriots ... also if they are printing you new copies/ get the frontispiece LEVEL. " New Directions took over 520 sets of sheets of the Faber edition and issued them under the title "Culture", changing the wrapper design.

Description
Gallimard. Softcover/Paperback. Very Good. Paris: Librairie Gallimard, 1928. Vintage original book, 9 x 7" (23 x 18 cm), pictorial wrappers, 96 pp. Stated "14th edition" on title page. Interior pages have darkened around edges and there is some scuffing on covers, also a small piece has torn off the bottom left back cover. Overall very good. This is a French magazine called Le Cinema Romanesque, and each issue had an adaptation of a then-current movie, with an image from the movie on the cover, and many images from the movie scattered on seven interior pages that were printed on high quality paper (some of those pages have full page images and some have more than one on them). It is like the "movie edition" hardcover books that were put out in the U.S. at the same time, except that this is a softcover magazine. This magazine provided a separate 7 x 9" single sheet that has a still-like image from the movie, and that was given out loose with the magazine. The title page states that this is a 14th edition, but I find this hard to believe. A search of the WorldCat database yields only two libraries owning an example of this book, both in Europe. And I found no other examples of the book available online for purchase.

Warner Brothers. Softcover/Paperback. Just About Fine. Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1990. Vintage original film script, 11 x 8 1/2" (29 x 22 cm), self-wrappers, brad bound, 144 pp., minor spotting to title page, overall just about fine, This script is credited to Ken Friedman and dated September 17, 1990. The Fugitive is one of the classic 1990s action and neo-noir thrillers. Based on the 1960s TV series, itself loosely inspired by the trial of Sam Sheppard, the film stars Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Sela Ward, Joe Pantoliano, Andreas Katsulas, and Jeroen Krabbé. After being framed for the murder of his wife and sentenced to death, vascular surgeon Dr. Richard Kimble (Ford) escapes from custody following a bus crash. Kimble sets out to find the real killer and clear his name, while being hunted by the police and a team of U.S. Marshals, led by Deputy Samuel Gerard (Jones). (Wikipedia)

Description
(NEW HAMPSHIRE). This archive consists of the labor of L.A. Russell, Lucius A. Russell (1809-1864), a resident of Littleton, a small town in Northern New Hampshire. The archive consists of twenty-seven documents from the 1850s, the vast majority of which are either bills he has paid or receipts indicating payment for his labor. Therefore, this archive provides a window into the type of labor performed by a enterprising Northern man in the decade before the Civil War, and the typical costs and prices of his time. Some examples from this archive include: A)NS. 1 pg. 4 x 6. May 17, 1854. Waterford. Recd of L.A. Russell two Dollars for crossing Littleton Bridge to years XX to Oct 10th 1853. It is then signed by Robert Furby. This document reveals even the role of tolls as an added expense for businessmen like Russell. B)DS. 1 pg. 4 x 6. April 26, 1854. N.p. A document signed L.A. Russell. This document is a bank note: Three months from date, for value received, we jointly and severally promise to pay the PASSUMPSIC BANK Four Hundred Dollars. The note is then signed by three men, one of whom is Russell. Scribbled on top of the signatures in Russells handwriting is Paid, and on the opposite side in the same hand it is written Bank Note $400 Paid, and the date given as July 24. The Passumpsic Bank still exists today as a community bank, 11 branches strong, though now as a savings bank. C)DS. 1 pg. 4 x 8. October 12, 1854. Littleton. A document signed L.A. Russell. This document is a bill For transportation from Wells River to Littleton aboard the White Mountains Railroad. The bill is for a barrel weighing 313 pounds and costing $25, with an additional $61 for express service. The document is signed R.H. Nelson on behalf of the corporation in a separate hand. On the back, it is indicated in another hand, possibly Russells, that this is a Bill for Apples 1854. According to a local historian, the White Mountains Railroad Company was chartered in1848, to take advantage of the lucrative mountain tourist trade. It opened a connection along the Ammonoosuc River between Wells River and Littleton on August 1, 1853. D)DS. 1 pg. 5 x 8. December 12, 1854. Concord. A document signed by L. Downing & Sons. It is a bill charging LA. Russell $140 for Lo one pan. Wagon. 6 seats dated to May 16, 1854. The document indicates that Downing & Sons Recd Payment by note. In 1813, Lewis Downing opened a wheelwright shop in Concord, New Hampshire to make coaches and wagons. It was reconstituted as Downing & Sons by him and two of his children in 1847. By the 20th century, after a few iterations, the wheelwright shop had become Abbott-Downing Company, a truck and body company famous nationwide for its Concord coach. This iteration survived until 1925 and the name was bought by Wells Fargo in 1945. All the documents in this archive are in good condition, with some minor folds and stains.

Description
Youngstown: Mutuel Publishing Company, 1939. Paperback. Very good. Paperback. 63pp. wraps slightly darkened with some light foxing throughout, else very good. 'Afro covers everything in dreams." A characteristic piece of African-American popular culture, a dream book was intended for platters of the policy or numbers game popular in cities across the US from Chicago to New York. Three digit numbers were keyed to dreams and intended to be played for the daily game. Some contained additional tables of luck numbers for specific jackets (Eddie Arcano, 137), for Harlem occurrences ("To hear a man play the dozen, 912"), and past performance tables for numbers dating from 1931 to 1940. Ephemeral and cheaply printed, the books were sold at newsstands, candy stores, occult trinket shops and most anywhere else people would gather to buy daily sundries such as cigarettes and snacks.
