Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Stephen_, with the best greetings! Bob Zimmermann / Generalleutnant." General Bodo Zimmermann (1886-1963) was a German general during World War II and one of the few receipts of two German Crosses (Silver and Gold). During World War II, he commanded forces on the Western Front, first as Generalstabsoffizier of Army Group D, and was later promoted to lieutenant colonel (Oberstleutnant). In June of 1944, Zimmermann was the Operations Officer in charge of forces in the Western Sector when he received notification that Rommel's Fifteenth Army was on alert for an attack from Allied Forces. He failed to put the German Seventh Army, which was defending Normandy, on alert "because of the weather." Zimmermann was held in prison until 1947, and in retirement wrote two books on his military career.
