There are frequent references to America, and considerable discussion of international law, the laws of war and the work of such important economists and theorists as Cantillon, Child, Cary, Postelthwayt, De Moivre and Price. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $950.First edition of a powerful account of the murder of Black Navy veteran Sammy Younge, Jr., which marked, to Forman, ""the end of tactical non-violence,"" inscribed by him, ""To B— N—, All hands & help are needed in the long range struggle. Keep on pushing & we will win without a doubt. James Forman 1/29/69.""Forman was an Air Force veteran and journalist who became involved with CORE before his association with the Freedom Riders and SNCC. In 1961 he barely survived racist attacks by armed whites before his appointment as executive secretary of SNCC, where he quickly ""filled a vacuum …. [and] expanded SNCC's role"" (Branch, Parting the Waters, 533). He called the disappearance of Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner ""the first interracial lynching in the history of Mississippi,"" and was leading a meeting in church when he learned that the bodies of the three men had been discovered (Watson, Freedom Summer, 206). Forman viewed the all-white jury's acquittal of Marvin Segrest for the January 1966 murder of Sammy Younge as a turning point in uniting the civil rights and antiwar movements. Younge, a Navy veteran who had only one kidney, was shot and killed by Segrest when he tried to use a ""whites only"" restroom. At his funeral, as John Lewis, Stokely Carmichael and Forman ""stood looking at the American flag draped over his casket, Lewis recalled, 'The irony hit me hard. Here was a man who has served his country, and what had it gotten him?'"" To Forman, Younge's murder ""marked the end of tactical non-violence."" The April of the following year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rose in New York's Riverside Church and boldly called for a ""radical revolution."" He challenged the values of a nation that sent Black men ""crippled by our society"" to Vietnam, in order to ""guarantee liberties which they had not found in Southwest Georgia and East Harlem."" In 1968, on ""the one-year anniversary of King's Riverside speech,"" he was assassinated (Lucks, Selma to Saigon, 113, 195-96, 209). ""First printing"" stated on copyright page. With double-page map, 15 pages of black-and-white illustrations and full-page facsimile. A fine inscribed copy.

Greek and Latin text in parallel columns from p. 3 to p. 279, on opposite pages from p. 280 to p. 375. Woodcut printer's device on title page and prism device to verso of otherwise blank final leaf. With 40 woodcut illustrations in text illustrating the fables of Aesopus, of which 37 are ascribed to Bernard Salomon and 3 (fables 46, 100, 118) are repeated from Tournes edition of La Perrière's Theatre des bons engines (1545). Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials. Early 17th-century blind-stamped panelled calf, spine in compartments, covers with fleur-de-lys centre-pieces, central panel with floral corner-pieces, blue (faded) edges (joints, spine ends, and corners partly skillfully restored). Later ink underlining and occasional marginalia in Greek and Latin (the latter mostly at end, including more extensive notes around prism device). Small restoration to lower margin of title, some occasional spotting and marginal staining, slightly browned, all in all a very good, genuine copy, nicely bound and with a strong impression of the woodcuts. First de Tournes edition in Greek and Latin, edited by Adam Knopff (cf. Typographus Lectori, p. [382]), of Aesop's fables. A second edition, with sixty-one woodcuts and the addition of the fables of Avianus, was issued by De Tournes in 1570 (cf. R. Brun, Le livre français illustré de la Renaissance, Paris, 1969, pp. 77-81 and 184). The volume also includes the Aesopi fabulatoris vita (pp. 7-118) by Maximus Planudes (c. 1260-1330), the fables (Fabellae) by Babrius or Gabrias (2nd cent.), the Batrachomiomachia by Homerus (8th cent. Very good: covers lightly worn with a few small stains, toning at spine and inked owner's name to front; tiny nick to top corner of spine extending to first few leaves; five pages with evidence of offsetting and a bit of spotting at outer edge. This is a publication of the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority (IPL) which is filled with historical data and many images. IPL is the first African American sorority for business and professional women. It was founded by Lola Mercedes Parker in 1929 in Chicago. According to the sorority's website, its goals are to: "Unite in sisterhood qualified business and professional women in order to enhance and improve the status of women in our highly complex, competitive business and professional world; Promote increased interest in the broad field of business education among high school and college young women through planned programs and scholarships; Encourage the development of personal goals and leadership potential; and Establish and promote civic and social service activities for youth and adults." This book offers a trove of reference data about the national organization as well as its regional and local chapters. There are 111 photographic images, including portraits that accompany biographies and messages of IPL leaders past and present. Much of the content is dedicated to chapter news, with images documenting events and identifying officers and members. We see sorors receiving honors and awards individually and in groups, including the "Outstanding Woman of the Year Award," scholarship recipients and the Alpha Chi chapter receiving the NAACP Life Membership Plaque. Some sisters' special achievements were recognized, including Soror Mae Marion, a part time teacher at the University of Texas and "courageous black candidate" for City Council, and Magnalene M. Moore, the president of Alpha Zeta chapter who was selected "Outstanding Teacher, 1974-1975 - Nationally." There were great shots of participants in the Miss Iota Pageant as well as undergraduate and teen chapters. The book also identifies dozens if not hundreds of women at regional and national conventions, banquets and other events such as the Founder's Day Observance and a Scholarship Tea. Several pages document IPL's national projects and auxiliaries. This book also celebrates the achievements of incredibly important African American women. There is an article on career opportunities for women in space authored by Ruth Bates Harris, an equal opportunity officer for NASA who made waves when she blew the whistle on their discriminatory hiring practices in the early 1970s. There are photo features, complete with biographies, achievements and direct quotes of eleven other women including Texas Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and Jewel Lafontant, the first female (and African American female) deputy solicitor general of the United States. One piece focused on the Kappa chapter's Woman of the Year, Elizabeth Murphy Moss, (vice president and publisher of the Afro-American newspaper), and one on Margaret Bush Wilson, a barrier-breaking lawyer and activist who became the first female chair of the NAACP's National Board of Directors in 1975. There is also an original poem by an IPL member, as well as a five page chapter directory and list of officers at the rear of the book. A celebratory publication loaded with images and information on this important Black female business sorority. No holdings located in OCLC or online.
