Description
Boson: Published at The Anti-Slavery Office, 1848. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed by William Wells Brown on the first blank page and inscribed to "Joseph Potter from his friend [signed] Wm W. Brown / Taunton Oct. 18, 1848." William Wells Brown was an American abolitionist, novelist, playwright, and historian. Born into slavery near Mount Sterling, Kentucky, he escaped to Ohio in 1834 at the age of 19. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked for abolitionist causes and became a prolific writer. While working for abolition, Brown also supported a number of causes including temperance, women's suffrage, pacifism, prison reform, and an anti-tobacco movement. His first novel, Clotel, published in 1853, is considered by most scholars to be the first novel published by an African American. Bound in publisher's original brown cloth ornately stamped in blind and decorated in gilt. Near Fine with light wear and soiling to cloth, rubbing at corners and spine ends. Pages tanned, sporadically foxed and with a light cigar-smoke odor. A didactic novel for children about a Northern white family and their experiences with slavery and the abolition movement. Jones was known for her abolitionist views and traveled throughout New England, Pennsylvania, and Ohio as a lecturer in support of Garrisonian abolitionism.

Description
Italy: 17th c.. Hardcover. Fine. 17th c. manuscript in Italian on paper, illustrated with five diagrams, one of them tipped in. Bound in modern marbled boards. Leaves skillfully re-margined. Shine-through and occasional ink blots. From the collection of Robert B. Honeyman (1979, III, n°1195). A practical manual for making sundials, both horizontal and vertical. The last sentence ("ex Patre Horatio Grassio Socie[tatis] Jesu.") indicates that the text is the work of the Jesuit mathematician, astronomer, and architect, Father Orazio Grassi, famous for his dispute with Galileo over the nature of comets (1618-1619) and as architect of the Church of Sant' Ignazio in Rome. The sundial was a key scientific instrument and the Jesuits, whose churches, colleges, gardens, and observatories were outfitted with them, were among the foremost experts in their design and use. They designed and supervised the construction of numerous dials for the papacy, for noble patrons, and as gifts for foreign rulers (such as those brought to China and presented to the Wanli Emperor by Matteo Ricci, S.J.). The Jesuit Orazio Grassi (1583-1654) distinguished himself as an architect, mathematician, physicist, and a designer of instruments. He studied in Rome at the Jesuit Collegio Romano, where from 1604 to 1606 he attended the "Mathematical Academy" of the Jesuit astronomer Christoph Clavius, a leading expert on horology and on the premier instrument of that science, the sundial. From 1616 to 1628 Grassi held the chair of mathematics at his alma mater. There he taught astronomy, optics, and architecture and conducted scientific research. Grassi wrote at least two unpublished works on sundials, both of which survive in manuscript: "Tractatus tres de sphera, de horologis ac de optica", 1617, and "In primum librum de architectura M. Vitruvii et in nonum eiusdem De horologiorum solarium descriptione duo brevissimi tractati", 1624 (Milan, Biblioteca nazionale Braidense, AF.IX.33) This manuscript has not been compared with either text.

Description
Havana, 1931. Very good.. 150pp. Stiff black cloth covers, printed paper label on front board. Front cover vertically creased, light wear to boards; remnants of glassine stuck to covers. Contemporary inscription on front flyleaf. Internally clean. In a custom clamshell box. First edition of the first Cuban cook book published in English. Blanche Zacharie de Baralt (1865-1950) was born in New York; she married Luis Alejandro Baralt y Peoli in 1886, and the couple moved to his native Cuba in 1900. She earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Havana in 1902, and went on to translate the poetry of Tagore and to write a book on Jose Marti. She also published this volume, which was clearly geared toward the tourist market, with the introduction emphasizing the idea of taking home the tastes of one's holiday abroad. Each chapter heading has an illustration, and these were drawn by Federico Edelmann and Conrad W. Massaguer (the one above the section for beans appears to show a cowboy riding along in a cloud of gas). Notably, this work contains several important Cuban cocktails including the first appearance of the mojito, referred to here as a Rum Cocktail or Cuban Mojo. Rare in the true first edition.

Genoua: Ponthenier, 1822. [Testa, Domenico (1746-1852).] Il zodiaco di Dendara illustrato. [8], xvii, 62pp. Folding plate. Genoa: Tipografia Ponthenier, 1822. 202 x 121 mm. (uncut and largely unopened). Original plain blue wrappers, upper third of spine splitting, minor spotting. Small lacuna in upper right corner of title, but very good to fine. First Edition. An illustrated description of the Dendara Zodiac, an Egyptian bas-relief that originally formed part of the ceiling of a temple dedicated to Osiris in Egypt's Dendera temple complex. The circular sculpture, now in the Louvre, depicts the constellations of the zodiac, some in their familiar Greco-Roman representations and others in a more Egyptian form. It also shows the five planets known to the Egyptians in a configuration identified as having occurred in the summer of 50 BCE, together with depictions of the lunar eclipse of 25 September 52 BCE and the solar eclipse of 7 March 51 BCE. This evidence has enabled modern astrophysicists to date the Dendara Zodiac to between 15 June and 15 August BCE; however, the Zodiac's age was a source of controversy in the 19th century, with estimates ranging from 2500 BCE to 147 CE. .

Attractive smyth sewn maroon cloth bound hardcover with gilt stamped spine and front cover. New. $65. * Reprint of the only edition of the first English treatise on the laws governing corporate bodies. The first six sections define types of corporations and their component parts. The following three sections discuss charters, "what ordinances a corporation may make" and "the nature of a corporation." The final part of the book is a collection of forms. Among the corporations discussed are two established by the Rump Parliament: The Norwich Weavers and The Corporation for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England. Active in the Protectorate, where he was Cromwell's legal advisor, Sheppard [d. 1675?] aimed to reform the common law. Ahead of his time in many ways, some of his proposals anticipate changes that were adopted in the nineteenth century. His work was well-received and deeply influential. Some of his books, most notably The Touchstone of Common Assurances (1648), were standard authorities into the nineteenth century.
