About Fine
Description
London: C. Arthur Pearson Limited, 1897. First edition. About Fine. Original red publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to spine and front board; black illustration to front board. The front inner hinge has been repaired, but otherwise the copy is in exceptional condition. A book that is often plagued with condition issues from faded cloth to brittle paper. This is a superior copy: bright, clean and unfaded, about Fine. H.G. Wells connects science with philosophy in this novel, which reimagines and modernizes Plato's tale of the Ring of Gyges. According to Plato, the power of invisibility could corrupt anyone possessing it, giving them the upper hand over friends and enemies alike. Wells' lead character Griffin, a scientist, succeeds in doing just this. "Griffin gives in to many of the same temptations. He robs. He injures. He kills...But even though Griffin is guilty of his share of crimes, his goal is not to indulge in hedonism. His goal is just the opposite: he wants to stop being invisible" (Frederick). Ultimately, the practical problems of being an invisible human work counter to Griffin's interests. The need to be clothed, the isolation from other humans lead to Griffin's downfall and death at the hands of a terrified mob. Indeed, much as his actions dehumanize Griffin, his invisibility allows the mob attacking him to treat him as less than human. An exceptionally important consideration of the benefits and dangers of science, and the definition of humanness at the turn of the century. About Fine.

Description
London: Blackie & Son Ltd, 1921. Hardcover. Good +. Wain, Louis; Stewart, E.H.. Folio size, 62 pp. English artist Louis Wain (1860-1939) is known for his trademark anthropomorphic cats, who live in a rich, vibrant world and display playful personalities amidst their alphabetised actions. According to H. G. Wells, "[Wain] has made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (n. b., quote from Wikipedia). For this whimsical alphabet book, Wain creates a series of colour illustrations for each of the twenty-six letters, with captions for each image written in verse. In addition to Wain's ABC section, there are an additional four sections; the second presents the ABCs in a series of hunting scenes (uncredited), the third is also an ABC with anthropomorphic animals of all types (also uncredited); the fourth section, illustrated by E.H. Stewart, follows young children through their day, with each hour of the day properly alloted (e.g., "Seven O'Clock: Waking Time", etc.), the fifth and final section is yet another ABC (also uncredited), setting forth the characters and events when "Amy, her age it was eight" said "I will give an At Home of my own" (please note: there are several scenes in this section presenting stereotypical Golliwogs, which are now considered highly racist). This work is scarce in the marketplace, with no other copies online as of this writing; OCLC locates only three copies (Princeton, Bryn Mawr, and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin); we see a single auction record (RBH). Interestingly, although Baumgarten lists numerous Wain titles it does not include this work, although it is included in Dale. Volume undated, we believe it to be a 1921 publication based on both Dale and a record found online where the book is listed in "The Saturday Review" for 19 November, 1921. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in cloth-backed boards, the front board with a full-colour illustration (by or after E.H. Stewart) and the back board covered in plain grey paper, the front endpapers pictorial, with a series of small line drawings of children in blue and the rear endpapers plain, the front free endpaper serving as the title page, every page of each section with colour illustrations; folio size (13 3/8" by 10 1/4"), unpaginated with sixty-two pages (of which the front free endpaper and its verso consitute two). ___CONDITION: A bit better than good, the text block strong although the hinges are tender, the interior is bright with a few stray marks, the sole prior owner marking a child' name, written in a child's hand, on the (blank) verso of the title page/front free endpaper; the binding is generally worn with the corners rubbed, there is overall soil with some marks, and some toning to the free endpapers. Although the binding has been generously used, still a sturdy, good overall copy of a scarce Wain item. ___CITATION: Rodney Dale, "Louis Wain, The Man who drew Cats", p. 136. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. HARRY TRUMAN (1884-1974). Truman served as the 33rd President. TDS. 1 pg. 8 x 10 N.d. White House. A typed document signed Harry S Truman as President: CITATION FOR LEGION OF MERIT Degree of Legionnaire Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Stapanovitch Sergeeff, 20th Budapest Guard Infantry Corps, Red Army, displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services contributing materially to the success of combined operations in Europe. The Legion of Merit is a military award of the United States Armed Forces for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The award can be issued to members of the eight uniformed branches of the United States Armed Forces, but also to military and political figures of foreign governments. It is seventh in order of precedence of all U.S. military awards. Notable recipients of the Legion of Merit include Joe Louis, Colin Powell, King George VI, Chiang Kai-shek, Charles De Gaulle, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, and Narendra Modi. Given how quickly U.S.-Soviet relations deteriorated after World War II, it is likely this specific citation was awarded in the early years of the presidency of Harry Truman. The document is in fine condition.

Description
1969. Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, Fall Offensive Against the War in Vietnam handbill archive, 1969, documents grassroots antiwar mobilization in the weeks surrounding the November 15 March on Washington and supports research into student organizing, Vietnam War dissent, protest communications, and the relationship between antiwar activism and civil rights language. The material documents the system of mass antiwar protest coordination through locally distributed leaflets, public calls for disciplined nonviolence, strike-and-march scheduling, and visual appeals to interracial and cross-movement solidarity, revealing how organizers sought to convert dispersed campus opposition into a visible national demonstration. The Student Mobilization Committee was a national coalition active from 1966 to 1973, and the November 1969 Washington action drew more than 500,000 demonstrators after the October Moratorium and alongside New Mobilization Committee activity, making these handbills useful evidence of how antiwar organizations framed participation, legality, and public legitimacy during one of the largest Vietnam War protests in the United States. Two original handbills issued in connection with the November 14 and 15, 1969 antiwar actions in Washington, D.C., comprising one mimeographed leaflet distributed by the CWRU Student Mobilization Committee and one offset-printed graphic leaflet headed "FALL OFFENSIVE AGAINST THE WAR IN VIETNAM," each approximately 8½ x 11 inches. The mimeographed leaflet opens with a quoted November 9, 1969 New York Times editorial warning that "The Administration has been following a course calculated to increase the danger that the protest march will turn into a violent confrontation," and answers with the committee's insistence that "Nov. 14-15 will be the most massive legal, peaceful and non-violent demonstrations ever held in the U.S." Its text explains the functional logic of the protest effort, arguing that "Only a massive peaceful demonstration of the American people can require the government to end the conflict and bring the troops home now," while also identifying government rhetoric as a threat to the movement's legitimacy: "The source of rumors about violence... is the government itself." The second leaflet uses bold graphic design and a black-and-white protest photograph showing demonstrators, one raising a peace sign, with placards reading "End the War Now!" and "Bring the Troops Home Now!" and a background banner declaring "End Racial Oppression!" Beneath the image, the leaflet gives the coordinated schedule: "FRIDAY NOV. 14 / STRIKE AGAINST THE WAR" and "SATURDAY NOV. 15 / MARCH ON WASHINGTON," linking workplace and campus strike tactics to the mass Washington demonstration. Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. Nov. 14-15 peaceful and non-violent demonstrations leaflet. Cleveland: CWRU Student Mobilization Committee, 1969. Mimeographed organizing handbill using press quotation, rebuttal, and direct appeal to defend the planned Washington demonstrations against anticipated claims of violence. The leaflet shows the mechanisms of antiwar communication in practice: organizers framed participation as peaceful, legal, and morally necessary, urging readers that "Marching on Washington November 15 in the peaceful and non-violent demonstration is the best way to build that movement to end the war immediately. JOIN US!" [2] Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. Fall Offensive Against the War in Vietnam. Washington, D.C.: Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, 1969. Offset-printed handbill combining protest imagery, antiwar slogans, and a two-day action calendar for the November 14 strike and November 15 March on Washington. The inclusion of the banner "End Racial Oppression!" places the antiwar action within a broader field of late-1960s radical politics, where opposition to U.S. military policy intersected visually and rhetorically with civil rights and racial justice claims. Light toning, minor edge wear, and small creases, very good. Compact evidence of the messaging infrastructure behind the November 1969 antiwar mobilization, preserving both the defensive language of nonviolence and the public visual vocabulary used to recruit participants for national protest.

1900. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1900. Original tan cloth decorated in dark green. First Edition of Ellen Glasgow's third book -- a tale of the Reconstruction Era -- the first volume in a trilogy (followed by BATTLE-GROUND in 1902 and THE DELIVERANCE in 1904) that deals with life in Virginia from the end of the Civil war until the turn of the century. THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE is set in Kingsborough, Virginia (modeled upon Williamsburg), and portrays the social stress caused by the rise of the rural lower class during the years immediately after the Civil War. Ellen Glasgow, born and raised in Richmond, would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1942, for IN THIS OUR LIFE. This is a handsome copy, fine except for the slightest of darkening of the spine.
