Description
Four very large woodblock printed folding plates, many tables & diagrams in the text. 2, 8, 19 folding leaves. Large 8vo (255 x 183 mm.), orig. aubergine semi-stiff patterned wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: 1857. The very rare first edition in Japanese of an elaborate analysis of the muzzle-loading Minié rifle, an innovative French infantry weapon of the mid-19th century. The translator, Kosaburo Akamatsu (1831-67), was a rangaku scholar and an important military scientist. He translated several other Western military works. This is a translation of Booms’s Verhandeling over het schot der draagbare vuurwapens (1st ed.: 1855). Booms (1822-97) was a Dutch general and military historian. After Commodore Perry’s two expeditions, the Japanese stockpiled Western weapons and amassed books on military strategy and weapons in preparation for a hostile invasion. Akamatsu was introduced to Western firearms and tactics in Nagasaki at a Dutch-influenced military academy. Akamatsu directly translates Booms’s preface, then recapitulates numerous trials of the rifle’s accuracy. This is followed by comparisons of the Minié with rifles from other European nations. The Minié rifle was imported into Japan in large numbers, and it was one of the most prevalent firearms employed by Japanese soldiers. The four folding plates, which are quite large for Japanese books, present minutely detailed schematics and cross-sections of the Minié rifle. Fine and fresh copy. WorldCat locates only one copy in North America.

Near fine in very good jacket.
Description
New York: Epic Publishing Co., Inc, 1963. First printing. Near fine in very good jacket.. Scarce first edition of this semi-plagiarized, semi-pirated biography of Jacqueline Charlotte Dufresnoy (1931-2006), one of the earliest transgender women to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Performing under the stage name Coccinelle, Dufresnoy worked as a cabaret singer and founded the organization "Devenir Femme" to lobby and provide support for transgender people in her native France. Her 1962 marriage marked the first time a transgender person was legally permitted to marry in France. SHE-MALE details Coccinelle's story through her surgery, and it is heavily based on (indeed in places clearly plagiarized from) the 1962 English translation (REVERSE SEX) of Dufresnoy's husband's memoir COCCINELLE EST LUI. Despite these origins and its rather sensationalist presentation, SHE-MALE is a serious engagement with its subject. Scarce: we trace only two copies at auction or in commerce and only about a dozen scattered holdings in OCLC. 7.75'' x 5.25''. Original red boards. In original unclipped ($5.00) color photographic jacket. 192 pages, plus two black-and-white photo insert sections. Bit of chipping and a couple of old tape repairs to jacket. "5.00" price written on front panel. Book with touches of shelfwear. Else sound.

WARREN G. HARDING (1865-1923). Harding was the Twenty-Ninth President. Proof copies. 1968. No place. The proof copies of Francis Russells 1968 biography The Shadow Of Blooming Grove. The controversial biography is best-remembered for a lawsuit brought by the Harding family against Russell. He discovered letters between Harding and his mistress, Carrie Phillips, and Russell intended to publish excerpts of the correspondence. The Harding family successfully sued to block their disclosure, and it boosted the pre-publication publicity for the tome. The proofs are in two bound booklets and housed in a custom-made green box. There is at least one handwritten correction and the pages have the usual wear to the edges. Perfect for the Warren Harding completist!

Esquirol. 8vo. [4] ii, 446pp. Paris and London: J.-B. Bailliere, 1826. 198 x 122 mm. Modern quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Light browning, but very good. One signature misbound. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 4797. Calmeil was a pupil of the French psychiatrist Esquirol. His treatise contains the classic description of general paralysis of the insane, along with an attempt to correlate the pathology of the disease with its clinical manifestations. However, Calmeil did not recognize that general paralysis was a separate disease entity (syphilis) and not simply a complication of mental illness. Norman 389. Zilboorg & Henry, p. 529. 305.

Description
United Artists. No binding. Fine. Los Angeles: United Artists, 1955. Vintage original 6 x 8" (15 x 20 cm) cardboard program with vellum paper cover. Fine. The Man with the Golden Arm was the first major Hollywood film to tackle the subject of drug addiction, which was still a taboo subject for American films during the 1950s. Its release defied censorship codes of the time while its success signaled moviegoers' growing interest in serious, adult film themes. As early as 1949 the source material was considered as a vehicle for John Garfield, and even in 1955 censors were very hard on the content of the film. Saul Bass designed the crooked arm symbol used in the film's advertising campaign, which director Otto Preminger liked so much that he threatened to pull the picture if an exhibitor changed the advertisements. Ranked at number 14 of the 25 best poster designs of all time, here is Bass' art in its purest form. Bass also created the film's animated title sequence, the first of many such sequences he created for films by Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock and others. (Wikipedia) For the opening guest-invited premiere, stars including Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Noel Coward, Liberace, Debbie Reynolds, as well as cast and crew, attended and would have received an invitation such as this. The West Coast premiere, as indicated on the invitation, was held on Dec 26th, 1955, at the Fox Beverly Theatre and was a formal affair.

From jacket: In an age where anyone over sixty is thought to be ‘over the hill,’ Hillary G. Bailey takes a hard look at history to discover that neither young folks nor old have ever been immune to human frailty: for all its accomplishments, humankind is still very much a babe in the woods. Bailey -- who has traveled the world with camera in had, observing the monuments and wreckages of human endeavor -- blends compassion with satire in this richly illustrated, highly quotable dissertation...
