A patent of Spanish nobility, (300 x 210 mm) 34 ff. 27 lines written in black ink within double-lined ruling (211 x 130 mm) Each folio with notary's endorsement along bottom central ruling. 12 section headings in two-line chrysographic (gold) lettering on field of crimson; 15 section headings in two-line lettering in black ink. Full folio miniature (fol. 1v) with silk veil; 8-line portrait of King Philip (fol. 32 v.) with silk veil. Endorsements from figures mentioned in text in various contemporary hands on blank flyleaves (fol. 1r, 33v, 34r/v). Contemporary multicolored silk cord. Later card binding, using approximately 18th century paper backing. This carta executoria de hidalguia (a Spanish patent of nobility) confirms the hidalguía status of Juan Fernández Romano of the town of Villamanrique de Tajo, a small town near Madrid. This legal testament to the rise of a man in a small town near Madrid to the status of hidalgo begins with a full-folio portrait of the petitioner and his family, kneeling in prayer, adoring the Virgin Mary with an apocalyptic lamb on the ground before them. The status of hidalgo recognizes lower-level nobility in Spain or Portugal, allowing the recipient exemption from taxes and the opportunity to serve in public office. Records indicate that Romano indeed served as the mayor of Villamanrique in 1617.1 The terms of the carta were presented at the Royal Chancellery of Valladolid on July 4th, 1619 (fol. 2r) and on October 27th, 1614 (fol. 4v). The carta was written by and in the presence of Royal Notary, Francisco de Colmenar, and witnessed by Ysidro of Mondejar, Pedro [of Mondejar], and Estevan Sanchez [of Mondejar] (fol. 4v). Due to this conferral of nobility, Romano will be exempt from paying future taxes and tributes and that Villamanrique de Tajo is to return any monies paid by Romano. His noble lineage is recognized and attested to within the formal document as well is in the contemporary, less formal text on the fly leaves. Over the course of the carta, Juan Fernández Romano's lineage is enumerated, establishing him as the son of Gonçalo Fernández de Plandano and Mençia Melendez, his wife, and grandson of Garcia Fernandez del Pladano and Maria Menez, his wife, of Plandano in the council of Cangas (2r). Joan [Juan] Gomez, a notary public of the town of Villamanrique (5r) attests to Romano's ordinary and extraordinary service to the town in 1618, a statement witnessed by Juan de Ortega and Alonso Sanchez and Diego [of Villamanrique]. Gomez is the autograph hand responsible for one of the lengthier endorsements amended to the petition (fol. 33r). And thus, the formulaic investment of nobility continues, drawing various witnesses and attestations, including from Gabriel González, the Royal Notary in 1619, witnessed by Francisco de Çereçdo, Gabriel Moreno and lawyer, Juan Alvarez (fol. 9-9v). A remarkable detail provides that during the period which Romano was allowed to present evidence and testamony for his case, a hidalgo named Pedro Fernandez de Saureçio del Concejo de Cangas appeared, whose age was given as one hundred and eleven years ("poco mas o menos") (fol. 11r). After a full petition to demonstrate Juan Fernández Romano's appropriate lineage and upstanding nature: FALLAMOS "We [the Spanish Royal Chancellery] rule that the part of the aforesaid Juan Fernández Romano proved his petition and we demand it as well proven and that the aforesaid fiscal and council did not prove their exceptions and defenses...were in possession of [the status of] noblemen and that they are not bound to pay or contribute to any pechero (commoner) or royal taxes..."r The single miniature within the text of the carta is a portrait of King Phillip IV of Spain, standing as a royal endorsement of the terms of the carta. Lacking covers and royal seal.
