Description
New York: The Dial Press, 1979. Fine in fine slipcase.. Signed limited first edition of Baldwin's last and longest novel, an attempt to "face [his] own legends," built around the story of a Black musician's life told by his brother. Baldwin's epic and ambitious late novel, written from the author's house in St-Paul-de-Vence, works toward a glimpse of a "utopian domestic space occupied by two black men in love" (Zaborowska) in its final pages: a much longed for, hard-won, and briefly held space for work and happiness. "It was beautiful to watch them; freedom is an extraordinary spectacle." 9'' x 6''. Original burgundy cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front board. All edges gilt, cream endpapers. In original burgundy cloth slipcase, lettered in gilt to one side. 597, [1] pages. Signed by Baldwin on limitation page, number 258 of 500 specially printed signed and numbered copies.

Description
1839. d'Orbigny, Alcide. L'Homme Américain (de l'Amérique Méridionale) Considéré Sous Ses Rapports Physiologiques et Moraux, 1839, presenting visual documentation from one of the earliest large-scale French scientific expeditions to South America, with direct relevance to the study of Indigenous populations, archaeology, and nineteenth-century ethnographic practice. Based on d'Orbigny's travels across Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, the work assembles visual evidence used to classify human populations, material culture, and natural environments within contemporary European scientific frameworks. The atlas reflects the period's integration of anthropology, natural history, and geography, while also documenting objects, burial practices, and physical remains encountered during fieldwork, contributing to early European interpretations of Indigenous societies in South America. d'Orbigny, Alcide. L'Homme Américain (de l'Amérique Méridionale) Considéré Sous Ses Rapports Physiologiques et Moraux. Paris: Pitois-Levrault, 1839. First edition, atlas volume only. Folio format measuring approximately 14 x 10 inches, containing 15 engraved plates, including one hand-colored plate, depicting skulls, mummies, artifacts, and other materials associated with Indigenous populations, alongside representations related to archaeology, zoology, geography, and ethnography. The plates derive from specimens and observations collected during d'Orbigny's expedition, which produced a substantial body of material for scientific study in France. Folio volume in three-quarter leather and cloth binding with gilt spine and raised bands, marbled edges and endpapers, and bookplate of archaeologist A.D. Passmore. Light foxing and rubbing to boards; overall very good condition. A significant visual component of a major nineteenth-century scientific work documenting Indigenous material culture and natural history in South America.

Description
New York: Pageant Press, Inc., (1960). First Edition. Signed by the Author. Octavo, yellow cloth (hardcover), 347 pp. Very Good, with heavy darkening to pages; in a Fair, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes chipping. From dust jacket: Every automobile license plate in the state of Florida bears the words “Sunshine State.” St. Petersburg, Florida, is as well known by the name “Sunshine City.” The stretch of neighboring communities along the Gulf of Mexico comprise the “Sun Coast,” linked by an eleven-mile-long bridge and causeway called the “Sunshine Skyway.” The word “Sunshine”, in fact, has come to be almost synonymous with the word “Florida.” This is the fruit of a project begun by one man. Fifty years ago, when Florida was beginning its fantastic growth as a great resort area, it needed something to serve as the trademark of its special peculiar climate and the environment. “This region,” reasoned Lew B. Brown, “where all the time is summer and the flowers never die, is blessed with an abundance of sunshine.” So he called St. Petersburg “Sunshine City” and made an unheard-of offer -- to give away, free, every copy of every edition of his newspaper every day that the sun failed to shine on the office of publication. Fire played a conspicuous part in the life of Major Lew B. Brown. He was born during the fire of the Civil War. In the years that followed, fire destroyed his business, his home -- but never his fighting spirit or his absolute integrity. In this admirably written biography by his granddaughter, we follow “Gandy” as she affectionately called him as a youngster in Arkansas. The War Between the States had ended, and with it, a way of life. Shortly after, Lew’s father passed away. His mother, Amelia, a veritable pillar of courage and determination, imparted to Lew her own indomitable spirit: “You can do ‘most anything if you set your mind to do -- so long as it is right.” He became a printer, a reporter, an editor; he found time to write poetry and to pass the Kentucky bar examinations. His lack of formal education hardly deterred him. Indeed, if anything, it drove him harder to slake his insatiable thirst for knowledge...

ISBN: 0520216091 "Nineteenth-century Britain led the world in technological innovation and urbanization, and unprecedented population growth contributed as well to the "rash assault," to quote Wordsworth, on Victorian countrysides. Yet James Winter finds that the British environment was generally spared widespread ecological damage. / Drawing from a remarkable variety of sources and disciplines, Winter focuses on human intervention as it not only destroyed but also preserved the physical environment. Industrial blight could be contained, he says, because of Britain's capacity to import resources from elsewhere, the conservative effect of the estate system, and certain intrinsic limitations of steam engines. The rash assault was further blunted by traditional agricultural practices, preservation of forests, and a growing recreation industry that favored beloved landscapes. Winter's illumination of Victorian attitudes toward the exploitation of natural resources offers a valuable preamble to ongoing discussions of human intervention in the environment. " James Winter is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of British Columbia and author of London's Teeming Streets, 1830-1914 (1993).
