Description
The Hague: Privately Printed, 1782. First. hardcover. very good. 96 pages. Slim 8vo, rebound in modern brown polished calf (some light dampstaining in gutter of first several leaves, otherwise rather clean; untrimmed pages a bit soft at fore-edge margin). The Hague, 1782, probably printed for private distribution. True first edition [reprinted in London later the same year]. A very scarce printing in which Adams, as commissioner to the Netherlands, secured the treaty by which that country recognized our independence. Includes an account of the reception of the first American ambassador. OCLC lists 21 copies. The important privately printed first edition of Adams' negotiations with Holland for diplomatic recognition and, subsequently, a highly important loan to the new young republic. "In January 1782 Adams demanded of the ministers of the republic and the deputies of the city a reply to his memorial of Apr. 19 asking for recognition. Three months later he was formally recognized, whereupon he submitted a plan of a treaty, which was signed in October, and made proposals for and secured the first loan." --Sabin 228; ESTC; N27676

Description
Hamburg: Edition Leeber Hossmann / New York: Sonnabend, 1972-1973. Minor edge-wear to illustrated wrappers; near fine. With 6 OCLC records located in North America. Accompanied by original 1972 Sonnabend announcement (5 x 9 in.), illustrated after a selection of the research photographs that appear in the book.. Limited Edition. Oblong octavo. No. 35 of 250 copies; SIGNED by Acconci. While Seedbed is arguably known as Vito Acconci's signature work, its context is often overlooked, being but one of a suite of performances designed as interventions into Ileana Sonnabend's recently-opened SoHo gallery space (Jan. 15 - 29, 1972). The following year, Acconci published the present artist's book—24 leaves of his diagrammatic notes (in-facsimile), typescript research excerpts (e.g. Goffman, Wittgenstein), and 78 mounted photographs—revealing the theoretical underpinnings and urban/spatial research that animated these performances. Acconci's reference to Seedbed here is coy, with a simple illustration of the ramp and a set of ambiguous statements: "When I am not inside the ramp, the ramp can still contain the product I grow, the product of my growth.

Description
New York: E.R Herrick & Company, 1898. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. Large Oblong Folio, 21" x 14"8vo., 209pp. Bound in 1/4 ivory cloth over paper covered boards. 22 unpaginated full-color illustrations, most by Johnson but several others by popular illustrators of the time. Moderate professional restoration primarily for re-attaching and reinforcing spine. Some minor cleaning internal strengthening. Illustrations are fresh and bright and though some have some mild foxing on the white borders, the images themselves are unaffected. A couple of preliminary pages are dog-eared. One or two short close tears. Edge-wear and some abrasion to lower front tip. Some soiling to boards. One of four volumes in this series of drawing collection by "...leading American Artists", including W. Granville Smith and A. De Thulstrup, with their own collections in the series, as well as many others. For the most part some very pretty decorative and historical watercolors, though a few are frankly rather disturbing. A very pretty, solid collectable copy with no other copies currently available in the market. Please note: due to size and weight, nominal additional shipping charges may apply.

Description
1888. Two (2) photographs taken of a group of young people while sitting on a porch. It appears as though they are on a holiday or picnic, as several people are holding lawn tennis rackets. The first photo shows a group of thirteen (13) people, some appearing quite affectionate or familiar towards their partner. The second photograph depicts only six (6) rather dejected looking members of the group. Each is wearing or holding a sign that reads "LEFT", while the remaining spaces have signs marked "TAKEN". Presumably there was some courting going on between the times of the two photographs, as the remaining individuals were all that were "left". A sign in front of second photograph reads 1888. Reverse of one photograph marked Benedict - Litchfield, Conn. Photos measure 4 3/8" x 7 3/8" on slightly larger mounts. edge wear on mounts.

Description
United States: Sweet Owen, 1876. Good. Light toning, dust soiling, surface abrasion from previous scrapbook adhesive to verso.. A comical lithographed card produced to celebrate the 1876 New Year, as well as promote "Sweet Owen" brand tobacco. Three figures stand in a line, with Uncle Sam in the center holding a packet of "Sweet Owen" in his hands. Two caricatures of men smoke and chew tobacco on either side of him. The caption reads, "We three are embarked, in one common cause, Bill snuffs Tom puffs and I chaws!". The other two men are (potentially) caricatures of that year's Presidential election running mates, William A. Wheeler and Thomas A. Hendricks; the joke would be that "Sweet Owen" brand tobacco is enjoyed by both political parties. Measures approx. 4.25" by 3" with rounded corners, verso blank.

Originally published: London: John Murray, 1915. xxviii, [ii], 578 pp. Reprinted 2014 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781616194024; ISBN-10: 1616194022. Paperback. New. $39.95 * The authors argue that the First World War effectively ended the existing system of international law, a system that was already in decline due to the growing economic and political interdependence of states. These changes have created a new set of problems that will provide the basis of a new system of international law when the war ends. In addition to supplying an intellectual framework for this new system, Baty and Morgan address practical topics, such as international arbitration, and more abstract issues, such as the clash between nationalism and cosmopolitanism. "[V]ery good reading....It is a thoughtful book." --T.S.W., Yale Law Journal 19:313-314. * Thomas Baty [1868-1954], an English lawyer, traitor and transgender pioneer, was one of the most intriguing individuals in the field of twentieth-century international law. A leading expert and prolific scholar who taught at Oxford University and was a joint secretary of the International Law Association, he secured his reputation with the publication of this work and earlier, International Law (1909). At the same time he lived a parallel private life as Irene Clyde and helped to found, and was the editor of, Urania, the pioneering anti-gender magazine of the 1900s. In 1916 he became a legal advisor to the Japanese foreign ministry. His legal opinion did much to "justify" Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931. At the outbreak of war in 1939 he chose to remain in Japan and continued to advise the government even after Pearl Harbor and Japan's declaration of war against the U.S. and Britain. His last legal paper appeared in the English- language journal Contemporary Japan in 1944. J.H. Morgan [1876-1955] was a Liberal candidate for Parliament in 1910. A legal editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica (14th edition), he was professor of constitutional law at the University of London and legal adviser to the War Crimes Commission at Nuremberg from 1947 to 1949.
