Description
Leiden, 1630. No Binding. Very Good. 10 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches. Fine early hand color; minor mended split, light offsetting, else excellent. Scarce. "First printed map of New Netherlands as well as the first printed map that names New Amsterdam and Manhattan . . ." (Schwartz). It is also the first collectible map to correctly show Manhattan as an island. According to McCorkle, this is also the first map with the place name Massachusetts. This landmark work places the Dutch North American settlements in their geographic context just five years after the founding of New Amsterdam. Though itself a scarce map, De Laet's map had a long publishing life in the many issues of Jansson's close re-engravings of it of 1636 and 1647. De Laet's is also among earliest acquirable maps to represent any of the Great Lakes. 'Grand Lac' on the map has generally been thought to be Lake Superior, which would make 'Lac de Yroquois' Lake Huron. However, given the early date of the map, it seems more likely that it is Lakes Erie and Ontario represented on the map, though there is little resemblance in shape and alignment. The map also includes a well-detailed inset of Bermuda, which is one of the earliest separate maps of the island, pre-dating the other Dutch maps of island by Blaeu and Hondius. Johannes De Laet was a principal player in the founding of New Netherlands; he was a Director of the Dutch West India Company, which sponsored its settlement, and he also owned a large tract of land in the area of Albany. He therefore would have had access to surveys and information from Dutch colonists, which explains how he produced this fine map at such an early date. Burden 231; McCorkle 630.1; Schwartz/Ehrenberg, pl. 57, p. 103; Augustyn/ Cohen, Manhattan in Maps, pp. 26-7.

Description
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1980. The original typed manuscript: the setting copy with all the editor's and proof-reader's marks. Complete book: 400 pages, 4to. Predominantly mechanically reproduced leaves, with some original typescript insertions. Original typed insertion leaves include those for the Dedication to David Hartwell; the leaf listing other books by Spinrad; and the About the Author leaf. The editorial corrections average some ten per page, and there are occasional annotations in Spinrad's hand. Songs from the Stars was Spinrad's ninth novel. Kirkus wrote: "Earth is in the post-Smash era: much of the northern hemisphere east of California is radioactive; tribes are now divided between white and black sorcery (science); chief transport is helium-winged hang gliders with pedals. Clear Blue Lou, something of a legal circuit rider, sails over to the Sunshine tribe to settle a dispute among rival Aquarians but himself settles into the druggy, free-sex nightlife for a spell before finding himself seduced by Sunshine Lou--a queen of the Word of Mouth communication network who knows (thanks to black sorcery) that her karma and Clear Blue Lou's will combine to reveal heavenly harmonies to Aquarians by means of a Big Ear satellite circling Earth with Songs from the Stars. First, however, C. B. Lou and S. Lou must accompany black sorcerer Harker to Big Ear, where they find the satellite crew dead. Debates on communications and karma ensue. Gassy.

Brooklyn, New York: Window Provision Box Co, 1930. Very good. Corners bumped, short tear to top edge.. A refrigeration solution for the urban housewife: printed advertisement for a medium sized refrigerating window box for city apartments in New York, "fastened easily to the outer sill of any window" and a handy way to "keep food cool without ice". Hauling ice up the stairs to an upper-level apartment would have been unappealing, so this product provided the labor-saving solution pre-electric refrigerator. Features a nice bit of design that incorporates the typography into the illustration of the product. Measures approx. 9.5" by 6.25", verso blank.
