Description
3 measures of the theme from the first movement, marked "Moderato" at head. Notated in blue ink on letterhead of the Hotel Victoria in Rome, with their logo in blue to upper left corner. Quarto (190 x 175 mm). With an autograph inscription in Cyrillic to Joseph Nicolas ("To Zhosefu Niklasu with best wishes from D. Shostakovich") dated 17 May 1958, Rome below quotation. Slightly creased at folds. "Shostakovich's most significant work from these times [1939-1941] was the Sixth Symphony, composed between April and October 1939. This work disappointed those who were expecting something on the lines of the Fifth, but its bizarre succession of apparently unrelated moods parallels the profoundly contradictory spirit of the times." Laurel Fay and David Fanning in Grove Music Online Shostakovich "is generally regarded as the greatest symphonist of the mid-20th century, and many of his string quartets, concertos, instrumental and vocal works are also firmly established in the repertory. ... He played a decisive role in the musical life of the former Soviet Union, as teacher, writer and administrator. He was also an active pianist, frequently performing his own works until disability prevented him. His last concert appearance was in 1966." Laurel Fay and David Fanning in Grove Music Online.

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1987 First edition, first printing. Signed by 46 Mets on front endpapers and rear free endpaper, including members of the 1986 World Series championship team: Gary Carter (HOF), Ralph Kiner (HOF), Davey Johnson, Mookie Wilson, Lenny Dykstra, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Howard Johnson, and many more. With CAS Certificate of Authenticity. Publisher's red cloth-backed tan paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt; in a dust jacket with a photo of the 1986 championship Mets team on the front panel, lettered in red, black, and blue. Very good book, with light soiling, staining, and scuffing to boards, and Mets-themed stickers to rear pastedown; very good or better unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, some wear to spine ends including a chip to foot of spine, very light soiling to panels and along flap folds, and former bookseller sticker to front flap. Overall, a wonderful array of Mets signatures. The "greatest game ever played" that the title of this book refers to is Game 6 of the 1986 NL Championship Series between the New York Mets and the Houston Astros, which the Mets won after a 16-inning marathon. The Mets continued their magical playoff run that postseason by defeating the Boston Red Sox in seven games to claim the World Series title. The 1986 Mets were famously stacked with talent, featuring 11x All-Star and 5x Silver Slugger Award-winner Gary Carter, 8x All-Star Darryl Strawberry, 5x All-Star and NL MVP (1979) Keith Hernandez, and 4x All-Star and Cy Young Award-winner (1985) Dwight Gooden, among others. . Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

1891. [Hugh Walpole's copy] Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co., 1891. 4 pp preliminary plus 9 pp terminal ads, undated (with prices in rupees). Original grey-green pictorial wrappers First Published Edition (technically the second Indian edition), following the suppressed 1890 edition, which had considerably different contents and of which only six copies are known. This 1891-dated Allahabad edition (printed there) came next, followed by the 1891 edition with joint Allahabad / London imprint (the first English edition, printed in the UK). This was issued as No. XIV in the "Indian Railway Library" -- though Wheeler published this, THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE without authority, after Kipling had left India for England. As is typical for this volume that is extremely fragile (more delicate than the authorized titles), condition is good-to-very good (-- with about half of the wrapper's spine perished, and with chips at some corners). Livingston says of this edition, "although it is very scarce, copies can be found." Richards A52 (mistakenly showing this edition as undated); Stewart 93; Martindell 42; Livingston 70. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Provenance: (1) there is an indecipherable signature (with the date 1891) written across the front cover; (2) at the top of the title page is the signature of Hugh Walpole (1884-1941), the English novelist born in New Zealand; he also added his "Brackenburn" leather bookplate to the inside of the front wrapper. The interior of the clamshell case bears the label of W. & G. Foyle Ltd of Charing Cross Road.

Paris: Alliance Cinématographique Européenne, 1939. Wraps. Very Good. 4to. 31 by 24 cm. Unpaginated, 10 leaves, plus wraps. Seven films get a two page treatment; six, only a single page. Alliance Cinématographique Européenne was a distributor for films from several production companies, but it would appear, at the time of this publication, principally UFA, the largest German film company, although the publication does promote a French cast movie, "L'Entraineuse", which starred Michele Morgan, who was to soon head to Hollywood where she appeared in several American films during the Second World War. Other movies include "Hymne a la Neige", a Luis Trenker Alpine adventure; "Noix de Coco", with Raimu; "La Nuit Decisive" with Pola Negri; "La Belle Hongroise" with Swedish actress and alleged Nazi collaborator Zarah Leander; "Hotel Sacher", about the legendary Viennese hotel which more recently formed the basis for a German language mini-series. The graphics are rendered in orange and black and white, with photos mixed in with illustrations. The front cover is especially striking with a cobalt blue background and a Zodiac circle made up of a silver band and this surrounded by a wavy circle of green. Overlaying this cover is translucent wax paper with the title and company acronym printed on it. Scarce, with no institutional copied found on OCLC First Search. Condition: moderate wear.

Description
(Maryland), 1970. Small men's 70s denim jacket from a female biker gang or motorcycle club. We find no information or reference to the "Metronettes," but as they were driving Honda's (most likely Gold Wings), they were probably on the more wholesome - rather than outlaw - end of the spectrum. Blue Wrangler "No Fault" denim jacket, size 36. With name ("Chan") and zodiac sign (? - "Pisces") embroidered in yellow above each breast pocket. "Metronettes" and "Md." enbroided in matching color to back of the jacket, above and below a period Honda motorcycle patch. Generally fine condition.

Description
Malden, Massachusetts: Edward A. Bowen, 1910. Folio, wraps, 5 pp. Fine condition.. An unrecorded sheet about two romantic youngsters by Harry Reardon, who was apparently a local composer of comic songs active in the Brockton, Massachusetts area during this period (we find a newspaper record in newspapers of a recital at the Fidelity Lodge in Brockton in 1911). The song extols the virtue of a girl named (Tom-Boy) Sue, and laments “Remember when folks called you ‘tomboy’ / in schooldays when I was your beau…” before becoming more straightforwardly romantic and sentimental. Edward A. Bowen operated as a small regional music publisher in Malden, Massachusetts, in the opening decades of the twentieth century, issuing locally authored popular songs, novelty numbers, and light sentimental pieces for domestic piano performance. Unlike the larger Boston and New York houses, Bowen’s imprint appears primarily on works by area composers and performers. Of interest to Massachusetts imprint completists, those interested in the tomboy archetype in popular culture, or perhaps the Johnny Cash fan in your life. Not in OCLC, with no other records appearing in sheet music collections.
