Description
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1957. First edition, no. 288 of 825 copies signed by Yeats. Edited by Peter Alt and Russell K. Alspach. xxxvi, 884 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Publisher's two-toned cloth; black topstain. Fine in slightly soiled publisher's slipcase, with bookplate and related typed letter signed. First edition, no. 288 of 825 copies signed by Yeats. Edited by Peter Alt and Russell K. Alspach. xxxvi, 884 pp. 1 vols. 4to. A signed, limited edition of a storied anthology of Yeats' poems with an unorthodox backstory. In the 1930s, Yeats signed 825 unbound colophons for a planned release of his collected poems by Macmillan; the colophons were printed on paper specially made by the Oxford Paper Company, which, as the text states, was supposed to be used for the entire edition. After Yeats died in 1939, Macmillan held on to the colophons, and in 1957, nearly 20 years after the poet's passing, bound them into this handsome limited edition, though one which utilized a far less expensive paper for the rest of the pages. While the colophon is signed by Yeats, the limitation number (here, #288) was added in at publication by a different hand. A typed, undated letter signed by Carl Kroch on the letterhead of his famous Chicago bookstore, Kroch's & Brentano's, accompanies the book, and explains not only the creation of this unusual edition, but the equally unique story of how they came to own a significant portion of it. Apparently, 250 copies of the book had been misplaced in Macmillan's New York City warehouse, and were only discovered when they were moved to storage in New Jersey. Kroch's & Brentano's purchased all the remaining volumes for the express purpose of offering it to members of the company's First Edition Circle, for, as he states, "only $14.95," less than half the cost of the original price of $30. Kroch closes the letter with a classic salesman's touch: "[W]e received only 250 copies, and there will be no more. To avoid disappointment, order yours today" Wade 211N

Description
S. l.: By the authors, 1855. Very good. Manuscripts, 1855 and 1857; pp. [12] altogether; in pencil and brown ink on various sheets of paper; fold lines with mild wear and a few very minor spots; several words in one of the poems traced with later blue pen; in very good or better condition. Characterized by deep grief, enduring memory, and spiritual questioning - the manuscripts present great examples of Victorian mourning poetry. The first group, simply signed "E." consists of a remembrance letter-to-self and a poem, the latter titled: "Two Years Ago Today." The two years actually refer to their wedding day, implying that they have had less than that time together. The letter describes their short-live happiness, followed by the words: "The dear, dear husband of our choice is not here to celebrate the return of this - our nuptial day..." She goes on to write that she believes he would guide and protect her and their "little one" from up in Heavens. The second poem, titled "The Dying Husband," is written from the perspective of the man, who laments the short time he has left to enjoy life with his little one and his wife: "The little pledge that crowned our love, that smiling little elf, dear to my heart because so like thy own sweet self. Ay, bring her near me - let me look my last in her dear face, where all her mother's gentle charms I fondly trace..." The last two - a letter and a poem - are the most heart-breaking, as they speak of the loss of a small child and the grief and unwillingness of a mother to keep on living without her beloved little one: "...Home! Desolate home! Where is your light and joy? An empty crib and rocking chair..."

Description
Montpellier: Chez Jean Martel aine, seul Imprimeur de la Faculte de Medecine, 1830. First Edition. Very good. First edition; 10 x 8; pp. [1], 4-11, [1]; removed; laid paper; illustrated with a woodcut at the beginning of the text; a few minor spots of foxing; several faint, penciled-in notes and underlining to text; in very good condition. The thesis, presented to obtain the author's Doctor of Medicine degree, vehemently defended the idea that pregnant women should not be put to trial and, in case one did find herself in front of a judge, the precautions, which should be taken. Ambitious and eloquently-written, one of his stronger arguments was that, although the law stated a pregnant woman sentenced to death "would not be executed, until after giving birth," the mere thought of it, as the time progressed, would cause her increasing terror and, possibly, contractions, which would prove fatal to the fetus. OCLC lists one copy at The British Library; none in the trade (as of January 2021).

Description
New York: Phillips & Hunt, 1884. 8vo, original printed wrappers, 66 pp. Later printing, with 1884 printed on the upper wrapper and 100 titles in the Home College Series listed on the lower wrapper. An entertaining account of an extensive hike into Yosemite written by a Methodist clergyman. Buckley's trip spanned May and June of 1871, seeing him summit or explore various peaks and valleys, including the Mariposa and Calaveras groves, as well as the North Dome and Liberty Cap. Interspersed with his remembrances of the Yosemite wilds are lightly humorous observations of his traveling companions, which give the account the flavor of the era and imbue it with Buckley's affable personality. Illustrated on the inside of the upper wrapper with an engraved scene of Cathedral Rock and inside the lower with a view of The Cap of Liberty and Nevada Falls. "Buckley and his party spent nearly three weeks of the summer of 1871 visiting Yosemite Valley and the Calveras and Mariposa groves. He was a keen observer and his descriptions of the Coulterville Trail and the pioneer hotels are quite entertaining"--Currey & Kruksa #26. CONDITION: Good, chipping to the spine, both wrappers firmly attached, toning and edgewear.
